  1. There was a lock cottage at Berkhamsted on the GU which was being used in exactly this way this last year. The neighbours complained to the police about the numbers of cars coming and going at all hours.
  2. Adrian - it would be good to hear how you get on with this when you've had chance to try it out. Regards David

  4. Our tortoise once did a runner having broken out of the garden. A neighbour told us she had found him wandering up the street (pour chercher les femmes) and had taken him to an animal rescue centre (silly cow) - she thought it might have been ours but didn't bother to ask! My wife went to the rescue centre -10 miles away - where she was closely questioned about our ownership of the animal - they are expensive now that imports have been banned and there are apparently many cases of "tortoise-napping"! Before she was allowed to recover the beast she had to produce a description, photographs and then pick him out in a line-up of about 20 other tortoises all milling about in a wire pen. Needless to say a "donation" to the Centre was expected before the guilty escapee was returned home. "Tommy" was not the most popular of pets. Regards David
  5. Yes, Tommo we are going - but by car! Going to leave the boat at Cowroast and just sleep over at our moorings. Up and down the Wendover is great fun but I should think very congested when the fest is on. I'm told people have already moved up there ready for next week-end. I hope they are staying drier then I was yesterday at Bulbourne when the rain was going sideways cross the cut and I was very wet indeed! Regards David B

  10. Interesting, this AOL user has no trouble here, but my son gets very frustrated often taking multiple attempts to log on to MSN with no real explanation of what the problem might be. Regards David B
  11. What AOL thing would that be Alec? David B
  12. Jill Just as long as you're not dreaming of rotary potentiometers! David
  13. I use this a lot in the public areas of my shop. Reason - because it always get scuffed, delivery men whacking parcels against the wall etc. - and it's easy to touch back in without doing a complete re-paint, BUT it does scuff very easily and I can't imagine it standing up to the wear and tear a roof gets with poles, planks, centre ropes, and feet on and off all the time. NO WAY. Regards David B
  14. Hi Steve With regard to Rolt I agree with you 100%. The book is an interesting read and I wouldn't be without it, but he is SO prejudiced against all change, good or bad. This is odd considering he was ground breaking by pleasure boating when the system was almost exclusively "working" in those days. Also, how was he able to indulge himself with all this "pleasure" related activity when there was a war on? I'm more tolerant of Terry Darlington, I just found that an amusing read. Hope your boat search comes to a sucessful conclusion soon. Regards David B

  18. Is there not a wheel circumf = 1 (of anything)?
  19. Ade, my son's mountain bike has a "trip computer" driven from a sensor on the front wheel I don't know if this could be calibrated to do whatever it is you want, but it's not expensive from most bike shops. Regards David B
  20. Alan Thanks for the input on pumps/accumulator, I have considered putting in a less resistant filter capsule, the one we have now is ceramic and down to some ridiculously low number of microns, some of the charcoal options filter "larger" and thus might allow thru more water (and I assume more bugs!). Yes, we went down the Aylsebury Arm over the weekend, very nice too. We warned by a BW man at Maresworth that a "rave" was taking place at Aston Clinton which could be heard for over a mile! We turned around at lock 13 therefore and stayed over-night around lock 10. All very pleasant and I was able to use our new gang-plank in earnest since the edges there are quite silted up. We saw little sign of the rave other than a small trickle of youngsters carrying cases of Stella and sleeping bags. There was also a whiff of herbal cigarettes about! Regards David
  21. "a mixer tap to the galley sink, plus a smaller single tap for filtered drinking water. How many folks use this type of system?" Yes Ade that's what we've got. The filter was fitted by me and is frustratingly slow to deliver the water. I have wondered if upping the pressure in the accumulator might improve this but have not yet received a sensible reply from the forum as to whether this is the right way to go. Regards David B
  22. Hi Wobbly Have a look on Chris Lingwoods post on "Understern Storage". BTW I think most call it the Engine 'ole Regards David B
  23. I love the site and wouldn't want to be without it. I would be happy to contribute towards costs, but agree about the possible divisiveness of different membership types. I certainly don't think it's right that Jon alone should be expected to bear the costs of this wonderful facility from which we all benefit. Certainly some form of merchandising is a good idea - but Jon should be careful about the financial risk in stocking the stuff. Why not just have the option to contribute, and a method for making it happen?

  25. Have a look at "Cut-Web" the internet based cruising club. They have no home or base facilities but have reciprocal mooring arrangements with many other clubs. only costs something like £10.00 p.a. membership http://www.cutweb.org.uk/
