ok i did not mean to shout- why on earth would anyone think i had reason to shout. just cap locks stuck anyway no-one anwered my question- well what a surprise on this forum. i am not on a narrowboat and i am not a mariner and i also know that other people do have baths (even on narrowboats.) so lets try this again- for those of you with baths and who use them what size calorifier do you find works well. if anyone has some useful figures to add in response to the question please do so. incidentally, my webasto heats to around 70 degress not 80

this is the expensive stuff but i forgot its name and it definately needs to cure or our tanks need to be drained

can anyone tell me what the name of the paint is and what it is made form that one can use inside the water tanks . It is the grey one that lasts ages raher than the cheaper option you need to repaint every 2 yeasr? i need the name cos ours is 'outgassing' bad and water undrinkabl so need to call company and find out how long 'cure' time and whether we need to flush through several times or simply dry out tank and wait? also if i knew what kind of solvent it was i could work out if i can flter it at all for use? thanks t

ok last atempt at getting a complete answer without jibes about our choices of materials. are there any reasons why you cannot put 12mm ply or veneer below and above gunnel -rather than 12mm below and 9mm above? thanks tania

hi cat weasel yes of course roof not straight and needs more bend- ok looks like 9mm will do me elsewhere if the ebay stuff is the right stuff (we have sprayfoam so less condensation so here's hoping they are wbp boards for sale ) i lived out of the k for many years and i actually had never heard of cat weasel. i thought it was your real photo and just a cool username- my partner put me straight but i am still unconvinced as 'catweasel' sure looks like a boatee to me! care to commetn? blessings tania

I asked before about this and we did decide to go for decent quality ply remaining questions are the thickesses. why is it 12/9 and 6mm why not 12mm all round or 9mm al round or if headroom an issue 6mm roof 9mm everywhere else? is there a reason for this? there is someone selling today on ebay some finished sheets ready for painting -they look ok but are cut at 5ft by 5ft and are all 9mm any thoughts? thanks tania

thanks for replies. so what is wbp?? we may be able to get tongue and groove for 7 quid a meter sq which we know is half price but seeing as this is not a do it yourself but is being fitted we thought that boards would be a quicker option hence NOT incurring labour costs. the decision is cost in the end and if it costs more to get someone to put up our t and g boards than getting marine ply put up then we would go for marine ply as we are painting anyway. we do not like and will not choose the veneer or traditional wood look inside hence i asked if it had to be marine ply anyone got any idea of cost of marine ply compared with wbp and any cheap sources remember ing we are painting whatever goes up so it can be marked . thanks

Hi we do not have enough money or time left to put anything but boards in over the inslaion-rather than tongue and groove wood . We prefer actually to simply paint over the surface as oppossed to the wood /laminate look anyway. so is out only option marine ply?? Is marine ply and external ply the same thing or is there a great deal of difference- remember we are using it for line out is there a maximum thickness or is 6mm standard for a reason? is there a cheap seconds place for ply as seeing as we will paint it a few marks do not matter lasty, any options other than marine ply to line out with the cost being the deciding factor i could get hold of cheap tongue and grrove BUT it akes onger to fit and wil add to fit out costs /time as we are not doing it alone. thanks so much tania

I just spoke ot the manufacturer of envirolet in canada and they were very helpful. the 240v model uses about 3kw a day-that is with the heater running for five minutes every 20 mins ina 7-20 f room temp the fans take 40watts an hour and run continuously so thats another kw! ! the 12v has no heater and needs an overflow drain or a hand pump (as used by some members) to get rid of excess liquid and it has 2 fans which use .25 amps each- about 145 watts a day.it also needs hand pump or a way to drain excess liquid. there is also a model which uses no electricity they all have different top panels and they must be changes if you intend to try different power methods. if you simply try to use your 240v model like a non electric model(disconnect it) you will have problems as the top panel must be changed for a different airflowand you may need a presediment filter drain extra. also once you stop using heater and fans or just use fans, the wind turbine cowl is a better option. the kits to change from 240v to 12v cost about 200 quid including postage and customs and to go non electric about 130 quid. we just bought a 240v one on ebay and are going to try it non electric by buying the panels and drain overflow (although we may not need this if we use a pump or even do most of our peeing in our potty for overboard!) we will also be ordering the wind turbine cowl.

I think it is time for the tech spec info!! 1) How many watts does it take? it has been mentioned that it takes 2amp and runs continuously-on 240v. and what if you get a 12v model?? that is , for the 240v modelby my calculations 1150w-just over a kilowatt of electricity a day, that makes no sense. my fridge and freezer combined take less- as a solar wind boat it rules the option out!! 2) how much space do you need in your enclosed area- if it has a pull out drawer is it at the back or front? basically anyone who has one knows what area they needed to enclose 3) ayone using the rotating chimnet which envirolet called a 'turbine' 4) can people differentiate between biolet and envrolet when they discuss their findings. 5) do you use paper without dioxins in it/ thanks tania

not at all traditional but we are having ramps instead of planks to get onto our boat. At the stern there will be on each side folding ramps which are a bit wider than usual plank length ( 18inches with 2-3 inch sides so dog does not splay!) and fold and store . There will be three sections which fold out to bank with some support welded underneath and the bit that will rest on the stern will be wider- very hard to describe so i will have to photo it for my blog (see link on new builds) .i think their width when stowed will be from side of cabin to about 1.5 ft-2ft of our trad stern and so technically will also form 'walls' no our stern!

we intend to move them to roof when going thru locks which is not too frequent an ocurance on the stretch we will call home, so tow bar hitch seems a good idea but i stilldo not know if i need to search for a particular metal type of tow bat or to get another bracket welded. t

i have asked this quesy=tion before but as a new poster i posed the question inside another thread. so here is a new thread! My partner spoke with another boatee last week who said he wished he had blacked his hull in 5 layers not 2 or 3. i thought this sounded excessive but as we are about to black our hull, is there any merit in doing more coats than usual? thanks in advance tania

well if you do not mind having to negotiate the gunwhales when climbing over them, we found that with 6inch gunwhales we could put bike on at an angle attached by a strap to the roof . we found that there was less chance of them being snagged up by overhang when cruising and it looked good. drawback was that it was difficult to get on and off -so not for someone biking all the time. we did not find they scrathced paintwork but someone worried could put pads on contact points. very rarely diod they become dislodged by overhang at the sides but personally as the person not driving but constantly walking down gunwhales from bow to stern they got in the way so i am trying to get a tow ball fitted and a thule bike carrier at stern instead.

hello this si a quick question- i have seen some boats with thule bike cariers at the stern and we now have got one but I am unsure how the tow ball i need o get is supposed to attch. i had thought it logival to ask builder to weld a tow bar straight on but if he does this what material doe sthe ball need to be made fomr as they all look to be made of iron not steel. thnaks tania

thanks for that link to the dutch barge guy- he seems to be using one that has a tank??? i think they also do one without a tank and then i saw they also do one especially for boats which is smaller- this one is advertised in the usa -one of the distributers and the only reason i looked at a usa website was that i could be sure they had simple and adequate instructions and also the price is a good indicator- wahever it is in $$ just call it the same in ££ http://www.ecovita.net/airhead.html
