If you play a Windows 10 CD 'backwards' you get Satanic messages, but even worse, if you 'play'; it normally you get Windows 10 on your PC

Yea, I got enough of Windows 10 and moved the Linux.

    Nope.This window doesn't open either.

OK. I am stumped. I cna open it no problem but I think Bizzard  solved it. I think it is full opening hopper window.

  2. Perusing Apollo Duck and ran up on this boat. Nice looking boat but what jumped out at me was the windows.  I have not seen any like this and I assume they open but any know for sure?  Would never buy a boat that doesn't have opening windows.

............. I hear memory foam mattresses do that after a while though. ...........

Any foam mattress will compress after a while and develop a 'hole' where you sleep.  Even memory foam. Had to replace one that had become horrible uncomfortable. Bought a new mattress, not memory foam and hated it after 2 years for the same reason. I really believe you get what you pay for in mattresses.

  4. I realize that on canals most people don't travel at night and it's narrow, so very different than larger bodies of waters.   But  proper lights are very important, especially on a wider body of water like a river.

You can tell which direction a boat is aimed by the lights.

For example if I see the red-green-white light with the white dead center of the other two that tell me it is head dead at me.

If I see just red and green with no white it could be headed at me or it could be headed off to either side.

If I see just the white, it should be headed away from me.

    So the white is important

The distance between the white and colored lights is also important.  If they are on top of each other is going be really hard to tell where it is going.

You should be able to find or make a simple removable mount for the white. Just stow it until you need it. Many new smaller boats come with there here.

I live on a very large lake and we have mainly faster boats, not slow moving narrow boats. I love boating at night but boats without proper lights are a danger to themselves and me!  Most boater are clueless and I have had a couple of scares with idiot with no or improper lights on their boats. So this is a pet peeve of mine so I say just do it right.

I once read an article about whole life costs for cars. It concluded that the Land Rover Defender and Jeep Wrangler were the greenest vehicles, because they had relatively few design changes during their long production lives.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one! I knew I read that somewhere. Seems that there was even a reference to how bad the Prius was because of the batteries if you looked at the big picture.

    Great reading!

There are lots of articles on aluminum ion batters on Google  Just Google aluminum battery and you will see.  Here is one

This is interesting and also puts up other questions, like they knew it wasn't licenced, why didn't they have insurance? http://kanda.boatingcommunity.org.uk/boat-seizure-averted-at-11th-hour-after-nbta-intervention/

Interesting read. I was not familiar with the website and reading their "What is the website about' page, it makes me wonder if there isn't a bit more to this story than the are telling. Seems they might be a bit biased. But when I read this is seemed odd to me he had 'chained' his boat to another and was locked inside. Sounds like he was expecting them.

Sad but I no longer trust any news I read to be accurate and without bias.

To be honest about all this, and having suffered target management for years, it must be said that this target stuff is nonsense anyway.  Targets are ALWAYS unrealistic, as they are only set to make the setting management look good.  If they are finally shown as met, it's almost always because someone has massaged the figures to make it seem so. They never, ever, reflect a genuine state of affairs, all they do is waste a vast chunk of everyone's time and energy (and creative processes).  And of course, monitoring targets, achievements and progress costs a small fortune, all of which is wasted money that could be better spent elsewhere.

Anyone who has worked in this kind of firm knows all this, and I imagine everyone at CRT has heaved an enormous sigh of relief that they won't have to spend most of their time filling in forms with fake figures to please their immediate boss any more, but can actually use the time to get on with the job.  So I say, good on them for scrapping them.

And, finally, my argument with my bosses was always that a target is something to aim at.  By it's very nature, sometimes you're going to miss it.  No archer ever hits the bulls eye 100%.

    AMEN!!

I really don't want to steer us off topic here, .........

    ;)

I think I inadvertently did that for you. ?

Thanks to everyone for the lesson in VAT though. I ship boat parts and kits around the world but being in the US I never have had to deal with it. But my customers sometimes mention it, but I really did not know how it worked. So this was interesting.

20% on a £50,000 boat is a fair 'chunk of change'.

    That is an Understatement!

Thank you, great information to know. Once we get ready to purchase it is things like that can bite us in the butt. So I appreciate it and will add it to my list.

That is more than you will get from most Inland Waterways boat purchases.

You SHOULD get a copy of the RCD certificate, copy of the VAT paid certificate and the Bill of sale from the manufacturer to the 1st owner

Could you elaborate a bit for a foreigner on the VAT tax please. Is this just paid one time for the first sale, when new? If buying used you don't pay it? I am assuming from what I have read that is is a one time tax?  VAT tax is a bit confusing to me.

The point is, the height in the boat of the ballast makes a noticeable difference to the tendency to rock about. The lower it is, the more stable the boat will be.

    Exactly!

I used a large concrete slab as an anchor to moor a sailboat to. We placed the slab on a trailer. A small aluminum flat bottom skiff on top and strapped to the slab and then launched them.  Paddled it out to the spot, released the straps and darn near flipped the dinghy when we lost all that ballast. Was amazing how much difference in made.

  12. US citizens can visit as a Tourist for 6 months with no Visa required.

Since we plan on staying longer we will plan on appling in advance for a long term Visa. You can get a 1 year, 2 year and I think up to 5 years?  And you can buy into the Health Care program if you wish. Since we are going to be there long term, unless I know my US based will pay, we will be buying into it. I figure it is simpler than trying to sort out payment from the US company while living on a boat with no fixed address.

'Lots of info on the website.  https://www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration

  13. No answer but your plans sounds much like ours. We started out thinking about a Camper (Caravan in the UK) and doing the Western US a few months a year. Then we discovered the canals and now we are very seriously planning on doing that 9 month a year. Return the US for the holidays, see family and return the UK in the spring. Glad to see someone else with the same ideas.

Our VAT is 20%. Applies to most purchases but not the likes of most foods, and childrens clothes. Income tax starts at 20% with the first £12,500 (I think) free. Beyond £50,000 (I think) income tax rises to 40%. It would be interesting to hear the American equivalents.

We don't have a VAT but we do have Sales Tax which applies to most everything you buy. It will vary becauses local Goverments (city, county, state) collect different amounts. But say 6% is a decent average.

Quick Google Search for Income Tax found this.

Tax Rate Taxable Income Bracket Owed
    10% $0 to $9,525 10% of taxable income
    12% $9,526 to $38,700 $952.50 plus 12% of the amount over $9,525
    22% $38,701 to $82,500 $4,453.50 plus 22% of the amount over $38,700
    24% $82,501 to $157,500 $14,089.50 plus 24% of the amount over $82,500
