  1. My back hatch moves on brass sliders. These have become buckled by rust on the steel below.

I don't particularly want to remove, straighten and replace them after treating the rust.

Some years ago there was a topic on here about replacing the brass with polymer sliders (or some such) but I can't find it now.

What are peoples thoughts about replacement sliders, their sourcing, advantages, disadvantages etc?

Thanks they look ideal and only 20 minutes from my mooring. 👍

The guy who replaced my batteries last month told me that he would take the old ones to the scrappy but that he now got very little for them because he had to pay a "hazardous waste" levy which covered most of the receipt. I can't really be bothered to research this but was he lying?

Fradley tap outside the cafe is extremely slow, usually enough time to order and eat breakfast whilst waiting for the tank to fill.

The late Bruce, once a regular contributor here,  posted that if you had never read War and Peace, filling at Fradley was the ideal opportunity to do so.  But hunger is more urgent than culture so it's your decision.

    Do you mean forum members??

I only know one forum member and I have not knowingly met any. So, no not forum members particularly.

Too many so called celebrities to mention due to a pub I ran in a very very very expensive village. Several well known figures attended, some as regulars and some just odd times. Its a long list but they are only people anyways.

Indeed they are only people and some are not helped by being celebrities but some (or perhaps more the circumstances of the encounter) will be interesting.

Possibly, meeting as a landlord should be excluded.

  5. There was a thread today that wandered off topic (as threads often do) into an (to me) interesting area.

Basically "who would you/have you had a pint with"?

Having spent the odd hour or two in various pubs over the last 54 years or so; I would be interested to hear of any interesting encounters which fellow members might have had.

If there is any response I will mention one or two of my own.

And those who work from their boat who need to be in one location for wifi etc and obviously can't move every day and can only move on a weekend?

Well they get a mooring, in a marina or on line, obviously!

They have no choice as they cannot honestly say they are continuously cruising, can they?

i suspect, as with most things in life if you adopt a reasonable approach and are willing to listen then confrontation can be avoided,  doubtless some of those reporting run-ins with sonny were from the piss takers or 'entitled' mobs.

as a point of interest were you asked to pay anything and did you  ?

    No and no.

I have met him, he introduced him self showing me his ID and telling me who he was, he was a complete gentleman and offered helpful advice even giving me his phone number should I have problems, but then I wasn't taking the pee or being confrontational. It wasn't what I expected.

Seconded, I only met him once (in Castlefield basin). I was aware of his reputation so I too, was surprised.

We're at the Waterfront Merry Hill in 2024, so thought I'd update this info:

All pontoons are now rented through Savilles, there is a waiting list and so none of the gated pontoon spaces are available to visitors anymore. If you want to get on the waiting list call: 07484507458 Kyle Wright

There are plenty of well lit 14 day spaces with rings in both the noisier and quieter areas.

There are CRT showers, toilets, elsan and bins but NO WATER!!?? So it's a mile and one lock up the canal to Blowers Green to fill up and wind.

And there are still plenty of shops open at the Merry Hill too!

There was water last time I was there, but best to use it early in the morning or late at night because you have to run your hose over the service road, which is always busy in the day.

  10. At each renewal my insurance company asks me to make a choice between a) the insurance covers me for any boat (subject to limitations)

and  b) the insurance covers the boat but any competent person can be in charge of it

I always pick (b)  as my daughter and her partner sometimes use the boat.

I suspect that I could have both for an extra premium.

    Endangering the morals is interesting.

If someone is committing a nuisance and it endangers your morals so much that you then go and kill them very badly can you later argue to the judge that they had endangered your morals and that your actions were justified ?

Of course you can, why not?

A potentially more successful argument might be "they were alien demons about to take over the world".  If you are going for an insanity defence you may as well make it a bold one.

    It's a Refleks 62. Total heat output: 2.4 kW (2100 kcal/h)
    Fuel consumption: min. / max. 0.12 / 0.36 l/h
Even on max, it should be using less than it is.

Thanks, I have posted on there as well.

My point was that judging by your photo, your stove is not using 0.33 l/hour. Are you sure your consumption figures are correct?

Hi, this is my first winter on my narrowboat and the first time using the Reflex stove for prolonged periods. Diesel consumption on low flame is supposed to be 2.88 litres per 24 hours; I have just gone through 40 litres in 5 days. 8 litres in 24 hours is way more than it should be using.

Has anyone had similar issues, or do you have examples of what amounts they are using?

This is what it looks like on low flame.

    IMG_20231129_135525.jpg

I use about a third of a litre per hour but I am aware that mine is not adjusted correctly; yours looks better adjusted than mine.

Is there any possibility that you have got your consumption figures wrong?

  14. I plan to fit a car radio on the boat but I have never owned a car radio so would like help with two points please.

Any advice on which radio to pick?

How do I wire it in? I imagine it will expect a "negative earth" connection, how do I get round this?

For the curious, I have always owned motorcycles so only have experience of the very occasional hire van.

Thank you LadyG - I have done loads of research and hired boats to get experience of boating.  Just getting to the stage where I want to buy and seeking advice.

I will second Rugby boats from personal experience buying through them - albeit ten years ago when Dominic still had the brokerage.

I would always use a broker for a purchase of £130k, if only for the peace of mind.

I'm not sure I understand your question, tbh.

Are you asking whether it is ok for a person to dress in such a way that their likely sexuality is discernible from their clothing and appearance?

But whatever that question is asking, I think my feeling on it would be: why does it matter how someone wishes to present themselves in public?

Surely it is their business, and no-one else's?

It may be that for some folks, they express their sexuality partly through their appearance- it is important them personally. That said, I imagine there should be some common sense limits- for both heterosexual and gay folks.

E.g. maybe its not ok to walk down the high street naked, or clad in a way that is likely to cause a breach of peace- that kind of thing.

But within some very broad limits, I don't know why any of us would be too concerned about whether a passing man is gay or not, or how he/she is dressed, or whether their appearance indicates their likely sexuality.

My point is that I don't think (perhaps because I'll be 70 this year) that it's entirely "normal" for an individual to outwardly express their sexuality, of whatever flavour, in the street. Of course it is no one else's business but it will attract some attention, better  'not to scare the horses' as Nick put it.

I think its easy for us heterosexual folks to be blase about gay rights, as we are not the ones in the firing line.

Remember that gay marriage was only fully legalised a decade ago- so this is not some kind of historical issue.

Throughout the decades it has been all too easy for heterosexual citizens to think: "Oh well, at least we don't just kill them any more, right? They should be grateful."

Then it was: "Well at least we don't jail them any more, right? What are they moaning about?"

Then: "Well they can legally marry now, right? What more do they want?"

But our society is still one where an overtly gay man is at risk of verbal abuse (if not assault) whilst walking the streets.  Anti-gay feeling and abuse is not an issue that can now be set aside, or considered to be 'finished'.

If we want to be a truly fair and equal society, we have to accept that there is more work to do.

I understand that it can feel to older folks as if gay rights and trans rights are being force fed to society, but I don't think older people are the target audience anyway. I suspect there are many older folks who feel that dear old Blighty reached its cultural peak some time in 1953, and that almost every change since has been for the worse.

But on the plus side, the younger generation- who (generally speaking) seem to be much wiser and more tolerant than many of their parents, and especially their grandparents- do seem to be evolving in a positive direction.

When I walk the streets it's not as an 'overtly heterosexual' man. Passers by would not know my sexuality, why should they be aware of a gay man's?

I have passed Telemachus in the middle of Atherstone locks, I was quite unaware of Nicknorman's sexuality (or his pension status) at the time.
