  1. These China-made aquarium thermometers are cheap as chips at just over £1 each. Bought several to check temps on my domestic CH pipework. The downside is you have to write the temperatures down somewhere. No recording function! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aquarium-Fish-Tank-Thermometer-Water-Temperature-Gauge-LCD-Digital-Thermometer-/322393560172?hash=item4b1027546c:g:DB4AAMXQWzNSeKv~

  3. What you describe is my worst nightmare; having my boat/stuff interfered with in the dead of night. I installed a set of ultrasonic reversing parking sensors on my car a couple of years back. I had bought these from eBay for about a tenner, and not only are the sensors set off by solid objects at the back of the car, they are triggered by people walking behind the car when I’m reversing. (Example here, but other sets are available: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Rear-Reversing-4-Sensors-Reverse-Backup-Parking-LED-Display-Buzzer-Alarm-Kit-/172491469238?hash=item28294af1b6:g:nLQAAOSwo4pYfxXz). In areas where a boater might be concerned that their property or moored boat might be interfered with, I could envisage a temporary installation of these sensors on the roof pointing towards to the towpath. As sold for automotive applications, each sensor (in a typical set of four) is designed to go in a 21mm diameter hole on the car’s ‘bumper’, but there’s no need to drill holes through your boat’s superstructure. I suspect a temporary fitting could be made, perhaps just using PVC tape to stop them dropping into the cut! I have no information how these electronics might perform if left powered up overnight, nor do I have any information on their current consumption; so, some experimentation would be needed. However, at less than a tenner a set, it might be worth a punt for a DIY miscreant detector!!
  4. How about these links that show filters by thread/cannister size? http://www.wixfilters.com/lookup/FilterBySize.aspx AND https://catalog.mann-filter.com/EU/eng/dimensions
  5. @jennywren If you decide to go fishing for it and to get in canal, do please wear stout footware. The first time i had to do that my feet were ripped to shreds with broken glass... And afterwards shower like there is no tomorrow.
  6. Thanks for the welcome, Athy :-) The name is from the boat we used to own in the late '80's. It was named after an experience when we decided to hire a boat before buying one. We set off on a bright crisp morning and after a short while decided a brew was called for, but to our disappointment we discovered we had no means of lighting the gas!! So, peversely, our first (and only) boat was called Matchless. I can't say I don't have an interest in bikes, but it's not ongoing. I have an 1967 Honda CB77 that I restored ~15 years ago.
  7. There's a 41' traditional narrowboat hull on ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/41-traditional-narrowboat-hull-/252977565735?hash=item3ae6a35027:g:UmcAAOSwY3BZNvGr The starting price is £3000 and there's 21 hours to go!
