I have an E-Bike. 250watts. I ride it on the towpath, if conditions allow it. It's perfectly possible to ride it safely and without causing injury to others. You can ride a standard road bike in the same way, and just as inconsiderately.

I couldn't see where it mentioned CRT/BWB Bylaws amongst all the adverts

I can't think of any other UK canal that has two paddles on the same side, although the original configuration at the lower end of each lock at Marple did.

I've seen a USA waterway with three paddles on the same side, operating a valve in the floor.

I have seen one on a river, down the Nene

When we were sent the invoice for the engine I returned it and asked for it to be amended to add the engine serial number. That way I could speak periodically with Beta to check progress.

Good move, I know one yard where they moved the engine round when owners came to look. Now long gone I might add.

I know roping together is not the same, but did that chap who took a full length pair to the Black Sea by water all the way get into a spot of trouble doing this. Not sure if it was in the channel, but I know he sunk one on the Rhine.

I suspect the stresses in the bolts and struts if needed would be very great in a side swell, so again he needs a naval architect.

On the face of it that's true, but does anyone know *why* they spent this? Did they have to in order to keep the tunnel open for navigation? Elf'n'safety? (which remember, stops people being injured or dying at work, it's not just a whipping-boy for the Daily Wail)

Following the death in Harecastle tunnel they were supposed to have communication through there but as I recall it failed to work, they installed aerials each end just inside the tunnel I assume as repeaters for mobile phone signal.

  6. If I was heading to the broads from the canals I would go the other way and out of the Thames, there are lots of places to hide between there and Yarmouth, you could just go in at Lowestoft. Go out of the Wash and its a long non stop run to Yarmouth unless you run up on the beach somewhere. Here is half the trip TNC On Tour 2003 Thames Estuary (tuesdaynightclub.co.uk) maybe you should read all the site to see what can be done in a standard Narrowboat

The Oxford canal is a narrow canal, keep your wide boat away as you will cause untold aggravation to everyone else  and it will be most unpleasant for you and everyone.

Its OK it wont fit through Isis Lock or Dukes Lock onto the canal. I think if he needs to stay in the Oxford area then a mooring will be required unless they doss down Ducks Cut

The requirements for installation of a fuel system on a boat with fixed fuel tanks are given in the harmonised standard BS EN ISO 10088 Permanently installed fuel systems and BS EN ISO 21487:2012 Small craft - Permanently installed petrol and diesel fuel tanks.

The requirement for petrol fuel tanks to be ‘insulated from the engine and all other sources of ignition’ is deemed to be complied with if

    a) the clearance between the petrol tank and the engine is greater than 100 mm and

    b) all electrical parts on the engine which could create a spark, and any other electrical components in the engine/fuel compartment, are ignition protected. To ensure that these components are ignition protected the boat builder should use a petrol engine that complies with BS EN ISO 15584 Inboard petrol engines - fuel and electrical system components (the engine manufacture should provide this confirmation) and for other parts, e.g. blower fan or electric bilge pump, use only components that have been CE marked in accordance with Annex II 1. The clearance between a petrol tank and any dry exhaust components must be greater than 250 mm, unless an equivalent thermal barrier is provided. For diesel engine installations, the engines used should comply with BS EN ISO 16147

Inboard diesel engines – Engine-mounted fuel and electrical components to ensure that the fuel components fitted on the engine by the engine manufacturer are safe. The engine manufacture should provide confirmation that the engine complies with this standard.

Fuel hose used in the system must be fire resistant if used in the engine compartment and Where fuel hose is used the standard requires that only fire-resistant hose to BS EN ISO 7840 may be used in the engine compartment. Such hose should be stamped to indicate compliance

This appears to be a requirement in  BS EN ISO 21487:2012

If there is a drain in a diesel oil tank, it shall be fitted with a shut-off valve having a plug that can be removed only with tools.

Each tank shall have an inspection hatch of at least 150 mm diameter. The inspection hatch shall, as a rule, be located on top of the tank, but for diesel oil tanks it may also be on the tank side. There shall be access to the inspection hatch when the tank is in position.

I just knew you would post that. All this about RCD on self fit outs

I have never worried about booking, the boats off the Bridgewater don't seem to bother when and how long they are on the C&RT waters in my observations.

I have known one to get a ticket

Good info.  I thought about buying a boat and then selling it when we have to leave but since we'll only have 6 months and  I'm sure it will take at least 2 months to find a boat we like we're thinking long-term rental is probably the better way to go!

Unless you could form a syndicate with friends and all share it as co owners
