  2. This is the type of material I'm after
  3. Does anyone know where I can get light duty rag woven material from? Like heavier rag rug carpets but much thinner to make curtains with. I've 1 piece of the material I got from glasto a few years ago. I'm off to pettycoat lane tomorrow to see how I fair!
  4. will do, local chandlers has it
  5. any tips on cleaning a roof that has had an sand antislip coating applied under the paint?
  6. really? i've got a payg sim with ee, i wonder if that counts
  7. unlimited calls n txt, 16GB data £20/month offer ends in a couple of days
  8. My concern coming downstream the other week solo was being able to stop at the lock landing past the swing bridge, get that wrong and the cars would be held up a while! Lucky a fellow boater did the bridge for me
  9. interesting, thanks for the tip, never crossed my mind
  10. I know this is an old topic but sunday gone a hire boat was coming downstream, they didn't open the bridge and tried to land outside the pub. They got a bow line secure then the current got the stern and the boat went across the canal, the rudder grounded and the tiller must have flicked over and broke the pilots rib and knocked him off. The air ambulance was there but not required. Its a bugger that stretch, even with the bridge open you have to travel faster than the flow to steer which makes picking your crew up interesting!
  11. its coir rope. I've got some waxed whipping yarn on order so see how I get on. That's how I finished off my centre line with a hot knife
  12. just bought 40meters of 70mm rope to make a fender for my boat. Just need to learn how to finish the ends off. £3 a meter, thought it was a good deal carl
  13. a mates boat has a reverse layout with the kitchen at the back, stove in the center. gravity feeds to the front and the pipe work looks horizontal but the stern is lower but it works real well. very deceptive
  14. prop update, took her out for a cruise this weekend, this time increasing engine revs to 2000 and she motors along fine, even against the strong flow of the K&A. Navigated the lock at woolhampton by the rowbarge pub without getting pushed into the lock tail so it was down to me not pushing the engine
  15. hold a Stanley knife blade in a pair of mole grips place over wire with a wooden block underneath and hit it hard with a hammer. makes a perfect cut
  16. out of interest what effect does it have? I imagine it can be adjusted by having a longer/shorter output shaft
  17. just to check, do you mean what I have arrowed in red on the attached picture? measured with the prop turned so it is closest to that vertical edge thanks carl
  18. I resized the picture. Does the pitch of the prop viewed through the weed hatch look typical?
  19. Prop vowed through the weed hatch Dam can't post a pic using my phone
  20. Prop update - using a gopro video camera on a pole through the weed hatch I could not see any numbers stamped on it. But I measured the radius at about 9 inches a bit difficult with a tape! The blade tip to swim or the bottom of the weed hatch is about 2 3/4". So I think my problem is not enough revs. Will try a cruise at 200 rpm to see how she goes.
  21. thanks Bee, i'll get in there with the go pro and see if I can find the numbers on the prop. If you have your boat flat out on still water does it go faster than someone walking on the tow path?
  22. blimey that's cheap! asking around at work, someone has lent me a gopro in a waterproof case so i'll have a go with that thanks tho
  23. anyone done this before? Aldermaston lock is large, it has a very large cill which after the lock is empty sits proud of the water by 6" or so and is about 4ft into the chamber. so with several people to hand, gradually empty the lock with the back of the boat over the cill just enough to expose the prop. Aldermaston lock empties itself over time so someone would be at hand to open the top gate paddle slightly to maintain a constant level whilst the prop is removed. to risqué?
  24. this is a picture of the prop during the boat survey, looks like it doesn't have those holes. good call tho I'm going to measure the prop radius this weekend and see if there is a way to read any numbers stamped on it oops sorry didn't attach the picture!
