    But, if you walk off backwards without looking or listening, as you claim, why should the passing public have the responsibility of alerting you to their presence?

    I'm sure there are time when going backwards is best, but why this means you can't look around before you do so I'm not clear on. What I am clear on is that 'the passing cyclist' may indeed have to then stop in an emergency, an emergency that could have been completely avoided if there wasnt someone stepping off their boat backwards without looking

    OK, well I said considerately right...which would consider stopping in emergencies.

    On a tangent here, but I find car drivers always get mad at me when I step off the pavement, without looking, or listening, while walking backward......

     

    In your opinion it's not suitable for anything other than recreational cycling. I find it can be suitable for me doing sprint training; as long as I'm considerate about where I do them.

    And as for using roads...I live on a boat and that boat is next to the towpath, not next to a road

  3. I like to go fast on the towpath were appropriate, wana get where I'm going as quick a possible really.

    I'd argue that the sign should be more aimed at cycling considerately. Consideration is good, speeding along is also good, with consideration

    You're bang on with the sequence I'd say yep. Big mess from start to finish. Several panic incorrect choices made.

    Yeah, like a bellend, I slipped my hand off the windlass the other day and it span a full rev in freefall until coming to rest on me wrist, felt great.

  6. When is it time to bring up the fact that several lock designs mean you can't remove and drop the pawl off the gear. Some times there's a bolt installed ot prevent it, other times it's due to the gate design having a horizontal bar in the way; preventing the pawl being lifted fully up and over.

    Interesting about the telephone line! I recognised the wire but never figured there was an actual phone line on that square wooden post.

     

    I agree it is a lovely spot, sunsets are fab there. I looked at a CRT mooring, but the cost was too high for me to stomach. Was planning to stay 2 weeks there, but heading back to the boat tomorrow to up sticks in light of CRTs confirmation of the news!

    The lack of electricity doesn't seem an issue to me really as the spot has good solar, which is an option thesedays. The water is a bit more of a faff, though one of the boats there used to run their hose across the canal when they needed to fill up!

  8. Just had confirmation from CRT that "this is an official business venture". So seems like the offside mooring is no longer publicly owned, or somehow the bank owned by CRT is being used as a private mooring by the local farmer.

     

    Also seems very odd that the renters of the CRT long term moorings were forced off the plot, but then CRT will allow the same piece of land to be used for private long term moorings...

  9. Hot off the press this one. Two blokes and a digger have just put up this sign outside me front deck.

    I'm not sure if somethings changed since I last raised this topic, but I do note that it appears to have been erected at about the boundary of where the 'gardens' of the previous perm moorings used to be - i.e. it seems like it's been put up at the edge of the farmers land - which is a good 8' from the bank I believe.

     

    If the farmer doesn't own up to the bank, then I wonder if you'll get into bother with CRT should you take a long term rental; as you'd effectively be moored to CRT land and thus overstaying.

    First time I've been here since last year, oddly enough to the same month by chance. I won't be staying anyway as the mobile reception isn't good enough for the new world of working from home

    Entitled...? I don't get how? Their sport involves interpreting the everyday infrastructure in a different way than other people perceive it. They are very polite, if you watch some of their vids the interactions with public, property owners and police is always very very respectful and polite. 

    And I'm pretty sure CRT aint promoting parkour!

    Yeah, looking out for one another is key in "extreme" sports (hate that term), I compete and am part of the gravity mtb world there some stuff you'd never consider without the right pals with ya.

    These lads here won't be pushing one another to do things which they haven't done their own risk assessments of. There's various roof top ones on their YT channel which make me hands go tingly!

    I'm quite comfortable hopping a narrow canal, but as you say, the power required to clear it from standing...

    Not sure if in their London canal vid they are jumping the full ~14' - haven't time to watch as I'm supposed to be working!

  12. If you enjoyed it there are others on their YT page which are very good too. I don't believe any of them are gymnasts, though the ginger lad was on the Ninja Warrior thing on the telly box.

    Just strong, fit and dedicated to their sport / life.

    In general the content they put out is very enjoyable to watch. They are adept at editing and have all become good at talking to the camera.

  13. vloggers are just doing what TV has been for years. They put out some content, some think its good and others think its shite, they tempt you in with a dramatic advert or, in a vlog, an enticing picture and title. They call it 'click bait' for a reason.

    My friends do it (in the mountain bike world) and make a living from it. There's enough punters out there to make it viable.

     

    Nowt against it, after all superlatives make you the president of america so can't fault them for using them too.

     

    But yes, as discussed, this lock wasn't dangerous in the grand scheme of things and the lack of footage was disappointing / suspicious

    The seller was a very nice bloke, he'd only just had the hull painted, there really was no need to get it done. I was only the replies on here that made me have it done. It was sensible to spend £250 when buying a £35k boat though, the advice was correct.

     

    The 'just needs blacking', then it turns out it needs loads of things is a huge warning in this case though. I would 100% have a survey done or walk away.

  15. When I bought my boat I came on here to ask advice much the same as you are doing. Contrary to some of the advice given I was happy to trust the independent seller who recommended a surveyor, I was present when the survey was done and I was confident the surveyor had done a honest job, picking up some odd minor bits here and there which the seller corrected.

     

    However...if the survey had gone anything like yours has and I had previously been told 'everything is done just needs blacking' I would be very very skeptical. I would immediately start considering that there should be a significant price reduction and I would be commissioning my own survey. I'm generally quite bold with taking risks, happy to assess the situation and go with my gut on things, more so than the advice that is generally given on here...but on this one...I would be SUPER cautious.

     

    And final point, as others have said, try not to get emotionally attached. Decisions of the heart hurt the wallet.
