  1. Just read that about Lindy Lou, very sad and it elaborates what I said, putting the window in fans the flames, i think by him opening the hatch and rear door on Lindy Lou he unintentionally fanned the flames http://www.maib.gov.uk/cms_resources.cfm?file=/LindyLouReport.pdf
  2. I know someone who jumped on a burning boat (in the early stages) because she thought her boyfriend was on there (she had just returned from work) this lad i know jumped on to see if the boyfriend was asleep on the burning boat, while he was on there trying to fight the flames (theyd left wood to dry out next to the wood burner and as it does it heats up and catches) all of a sudden the fire roars up, reason being, the boyfriend had nipped to the local shop came back realised it was on fire and for some bizzare reason thinking his girlfriend was inside he smashed kicked in one of the back windows, this caused a rush of nice fresh air through the window to the open stern door, the lad inside had to make a sharp exit, she for some reason once he had got on the boat to see if her boyfriend was on it stepped out of site of the boat, so he didnt see her upon his return hence putting the window in fearing she was on board. Could have ended badly one way or the other but luckily everyone was okay. That burnt to a write off within half hour

    Sunk

Always seems to be the same way, boats with leaky stern glands or boats left unattended over a matter of days/weeks if not been bilged, the stern goes down first then once the drainage holes for the bilge, sinks etc along the boat go under then down she goes
  10. Its for sale on apollo for 15k http://www.apolloduck.co.uk/feature.phtml?id=399250 Still seamus walsh doesnt throw up any similar on google image search, theres a 49 footer on there same shape apparently built by rugby boats.... i guess the design isnt from just one builder, they all copy each other? As thats all steel where as the 49 footer has a GRP top ?
  11. Seen a few of these now in this shape which i really like, all different lengths, and all 3 said were built by 3 different manufacturers....
  12. I cant wait to buy a boat, even if it does cost me at the end of the day itl still be mine, my own home, with no mortgage and i wont be paying £900 a month to live in a mouldy rented apartment !
  13. Oh i thought u meant when more up for some reason lol
  14. Isnt that canal dependant though? Some places my friends have moored up its been flat, but other places its like you dont need to moor it with ropes just run it into the silt and it stays there itself at a dodgy angle, some places need a good dredging !
  15. Hello people. Ive found a boat ive fell in love with on ebay, but the price at £34k is a little out of my price range. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251792774727?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I want reverse layout, i cannot get my head around why 90% of the narrowboats ive looked at have the bed on the stern end? Surely that can't be warm in the winter? I then from finding that advert went onto the boat builders site and it appears a boat of that size and fitout is around £45-£50k new. That boat is 40ft. I have a fitout plan of it which i pinched off the boat builders site and made a couple of modifications. Basically after the living area/dinette door you open that and are immediately faced with the toilet with the access door to the bedroom on the other side, now id do away with these doors, put the toilet next to the shower/sink, and fit a wall in front of the bathroom with another door on, so im left with a walk through corridor from the living area to the bedroom and the bathroom area is seperate. Id also probably go for a 45ft and make the dinette smaller and between the end of the dinette seating and galley have a small 2 seater sofa, its nice to sit at the dinette but sometimes its nice to kickback on a sofa like on my mates boat. So i know what i want, i know what size boat i need, its just finding one similar in my price range, or finding one i can build to what spec i want. Heres a million dollar question.... in that advert, where do you buy everything from ? Like the wood, cupboards, kitchen area, seating? Is it all custom made or is there somewhere u can buy it from? Getting there !
  16. So many ins and outs with boats ive learnt.... like my other thread my friend selling his larger fully refurbed boat with hundreds of photos to show it at every stage from a bare metal shell to fully repainted and fitted out and someone still wanted a survey... but then again theres another boat in the same brokerage thats in a right shit state, the paints peeling off it, the doors are rotten, its sat to one side yet its up for around the same price other cleaner boats of the same size next to it are.. i guess its the same with cars, you get one thats clean, problem free from a honest seller for 2 grand, then the same car, age, mileage, thats rotten, no history, needs a chunk of work doing on it for the same price and when you clearly point out the faults the seller still wont budge on price ! I had it a few months ago i travelled to view a Audi that was described as ' mint condition with full mot, full history , clean ' got there, it had gaps in the history, the mileage didnt tally up with the MOT, one side had had a dodgy repaint as lacquer had peeled around the shuts, it needed a full exhaust, 2 tyres, about 5 bulbs, wiper blades, and the radiater was leaking, but he laughed when i tried knocking him down so said ill report him to ebay for selling a car not fit for use, which as a trader he is not allowed to do by law. funnily enough i got halfway home and he text me offering £500 off the asking price, i said no thanks mate. lol
  17. Funny you say that cause a friend of mine put his up in the local marina brokerage or something, it sat there for 6 months and had like 2 people come look around it, wasnt over priced but he whacked it on ebay 99p no reserve and it sold 7 days later for £1500 less than his asking price. I find the same with cars, gumtree, autotrader, all crap but ebay you could sell kangaroos to australians on there lol. I did think it was a little overpriced, there is another 38 footer on there for 21k but its also out of the water, could do with a lick of paint/blacking but the inside was immaculate. Apparently most of these 40 - 50ft boats are ending up in london as everyones buying them as its cheaper than living in a house/flat
  18. Just found this all a bit daunting to be fair. I had ideas of a project boat, ie one with a good metal work, half decent engine, that just needed a refit inside and paintjob, but then seemed to be scared away from the idea as cheap boats are always cheap for a reason plus many other reasons, then i had an idea of buying a sailaway but someone again put me off that idea saying if you plan to buy it and live on it youl live in sawdust and crap till its done, i dont do well with dust had to leave a job because of it.. then i looked at renting one but everyone said the guy thats doing it is doing something illegal either that or its not all above board which i dont want to get involved with as itl be my home and im not risking homelessness, so now im back to the drawing board where im just going to save like mad for a while and buy something like that one in the ebay link i posted. Ive noticed if someones advertising a boat for 25k yes youl want to get it surveyed so people tend to offer £1000 - £1500 off the asking price to cover costs of dragging out the water and surveying it. Ill get there soon !
  19. Seen this one on eBay anyone know anything about it? I know its not a project and i know its not reverse layout but i really like it http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NARROWBOAT-38-FT-CRUISER-STERN-BOAT-SAFETY-NOV-2018-/121542573048?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1c4c807bf8
  20. I guess its just I and my friend know there is 100% nothing wrong with that boat, he has severe ocd and is very picky and no expense has been spared as it was funded with inheritance money so it wasnt like he was strapped for cash, everything has been done by reputable boat company/companies. Its like buying a brand new car and then taking it for an MOT inspection a month later, doesnt seem to make any sense to me but if they want to pay for the survey/lift out i guess its down to them. Just find it odd thats all but each to their own i guess.
  21. Not sure which section to put this in, but i have a few friends who own narrowboats and i mentioned I was on here, and one of my friends is selling his boat to downgrade to a smaller one now him and his partner have seperated. 3 months ago his boat was out the water, the entire hull was replated, given 2/3 coats of epoxy black, the cabin was all repainted, it was rewired inside and out, literally taken back to a bare shell and rebuilt from scratch again, everything is as new (boat was built in 1985 by rugby builders), he spent a fair chunk of his inheritance money on it. It was surveyed when it was removed from the water before the work was done and the only issue was something to do with the stern gland hole rusting and slight pitting below 5mm on the waterline in areas? but apparently it was okay as it was for a while but he still had it overplated (makes no sense to me a newbie) but these were both fixed during the welding it had done. He has had a couple very interested in it, with cash waiting, (aged in there 50s) he has provided them with a disc of over 400 photos, paperwork showing every stage of the rebuild/refit/repaint, with reicepts to proove the welding work (so they could even call and check) all done by reputable companies. He is in a dilemma because this couple are willing to pay the full asking price if the survey doesnt throw anything up, but it means it coming out of the water, something which the couple are paying for along with the survey. He and I cannot understand that if the boat was sound before it came out of the water bar 2 minor issues, has been fully replated, rewired, refitted, blacked, painted and everything, why would someone spend £500 - £600 on a survey and getting it out the water? The second thing he has someone else interested but he is trying to get £3500 off the asking price, but this bloke is happy with the photos he has seen and has cash waiting, but my friend wants his asking price as he is still making a loss at that. So the big question here is, after all the work that has been done to it, with proof, why would someone get a survey done? is it just for peace of mind or are we missing something? The work done can be proved i photos, paperwork and by calling the company who did it, and also if they are going to pay for a survey and everything then surely they are more than likely going to purchase it? Im telling my friend to hold on, but hes getting itchy feet as the marina hes got it cant get out the water for another 3 weeks and he just wants it sold so he can buy another, but im telling him to hold tight as i feel personally the couple will buy it? Like i said it makes zero sense to me so im asking for a friend. Any thoughts?
  22. Hi all, still relatively new here still relatively undecided about whether im going to buy a cheap wreck to do up, a half decent one i can use as is and can change bit by bit, or a sailaway or what im very undecided. Ive decided the best thing i can do is rent a boat for 6 months as there is someone near me that rents boats out on 3, 6 , 9 or 12 month contracts, I won't say how much per month as this is the point of this post, but the price per month is inclusive of everything, there is no extra costs so what i pay a month to this person is one payment and then obviously il have to put diesel in, heating fuels coal etc He has 3 on offer all between 45 and 55 ft in length narrowboats, all recently refurbished and fitted out with everything needed as it would be if you lived in a normal brick and mortar home, washing machine etc. They are constant cruisers so not stuck in marina either. I feel this is the best way for me, il get to experience the lifestyle, the highs and lows and i feel chucking myself in at the deep end renting one is the best way to do this before i spend a lot of money out on something that may not work out or may not be for me. So what would you say is a fair amount to rent a boat, per calender month, where basically i can move my belonging onto and off i go? Im sure someone on here has done similar? Also is there any other things il need to sort? I need a postal address so i guess id need to rent a PO box somewhere? Other than that i cant see anything else holding me back, im single, still fairly young, no kids etc
  23. Thanks mate, yeah ive got a 3k overdraft on another account which ive always had for emergencies. Im pretty technical minded and have a large range of tools so any engine work would be no trouble for someone like me. I also used to buy and sell used cars, ive had over 100 in the last 7 years and ive learnt whats a lemon and whats not a lemon, or thats a lemon with hope lol. Ill hold out for one that ticks all the boxes, recent survey, blacking etc with proof, theres so many ins and outs i guess, i know a few people into them so theyl tell me straight if im buying a lemon or if one is worth buying or not
  24. I might have a word with the bank, i think i dismissed the idea too lightly of getting a loan. Im helping a friend take a boat to another location which is going to take around 5 - 6 days and he wants me to spend one day cruising it and the next day i can do the locks so its experience. I borrowed £6000 off the bank not long ago no problem, minimal interest over 3 years, and 6 months later i sold the car I took the loan out for and paid the loan off, so hopefully that will stand me in good stead. I dont want an old boat, something 2000 or newer, and around or upto 45 feet at most. Would i be looking around £20k loan wise? ive got 5k in savings would that be enough or should i aim towards the 30k mark? I don't think il have any trouble taking a loan out for £20k they offered me up to £15k for a car with minimal fuss.
