  1. are you suggesting we SURF over in a FLASH way this thread before we get swamped in a TIDE of abuse
  2. from what i can see most of you are trying to justify the fact that there is no sort of "log book" or similar in the boat world, that's fair enough i never wanted to get into any fors or against on the issue, nobody has to explain the does or don'ts regarding buying or selling items to me,being new to this world of narrowboating when i found out there wasn't a sort of form like a "log book"or why the buyer should pay for a survey etc i asked questions regarding same and a lot of positive remarks were forthcoming, but some of you seem of the opinion that i'm having a go at the boating system, this is not the case at all,on the contarary i've found this a real eye opener to a world of friendly helpfull people,i just ask questions, the answers may seem obvious to some of you and indeed after reading the replies,i sometimes think oh yeah why didn't i realise that or whatever, just finding out things that's all.
  3. yes ,but when you purchase motor vehicles etc,you wouldn't accept it without the log book, just the same as you wouldn't buy a property without the deeds,it's not 100% proof of ownership but these are pretty much accepted as such when you've took the usuall finance checks etc,it's just that there is no such compulsory type of form in the boat world it seems.
  4. after reading the latest threads,i would have thought the small ship register would be a compulsory thing to have ,like a sort of log book for boats no?
  5. i can understand all of your views ,you all obviously have forgotten more than i will ever know about narrowboating and what goes with it,my main concern is that from what i can see,you could buy a boat privately for let's just say £30000,trust the seller when he says the boat is his, then find out that it isn't because there is no certificate of ownership to prove otherwise.does anyone have any experience of this happening? and where do you stand if it does in regard to the law and proceedures of reimbursment because i would have thought a court of law would think anyone parting with such an amount of money without a bonafide reciept of ownership would be lacking in the grey matter.
  6. how can anyone agree with a system where there is not only no legal certificate of condition but not even and more unbelievably a certificate of ownership ! does anyone see what i'm getting at or have you all got that much money or trust in your fellow man?
  7. can't believe it !why bother ?keep your dough and hope for the best? yeah right! without getting into any argumentative posts here i still find it hard to believe there is no legal document covering the buyer with so much money involved and never will.
  8. that's surely like saying it's not worth the paper it's written on ,isn't it a legal document?
  9. i'm new to narrowboating, and have learned a lot in a short time, what i can't get my head around is why the buyer should sort surveys, etc out when the onus should surely be on the seller to prove the condition of the boat he is asking at the least several thousands for.it's like buying a car/van/bike etc and the seller telling you it's up to you to get it M.O.T'd,!If money was really tight you could "hope for the best"and not have a survey, buy a load of trouble and the seller's skipping all the way to the bank.rediculous in my opinion,i wonder how many buyers have been stitched up by "legal thieves"
  10. i'm a newcomer to boating but having a survey on this just wouldn't enter my head it'll be interesting to see the comments of the experienced members but if any issues showed up after such a short period i would be very disallusioned. .
  11. are li ster lpws2 water cooled, good engines?thank you.phil
  12. yes i see what you mean, and if it's going to be used mainly as a liveaboard you really are losing valuable space,i suppose if you got it at the right money you could think about a cover and utilise the space that way?have you heard of anything negative or otherwise regarding ken yates boats?phil.
  13. didn't give it a thought,actually,slapped wrist!
  14. i am currently looking at a 42ft cruiser called nellelinden, the owner says it was built by Ken Yates its a 2004, does anyone know about this builder, it seems a well enough built boat, it's on e bay if anyone could perhaps give us ther views. Thank you Phil
  15. hi, i've been looking for a boat for my daughter to live aboard and have been advised to not really go less than 40ft,but have seen what i think is a good boat but it's 34ft,it ticks all the boxes that i think she would need and the main thing is it's a 2007, a boat th is new we could never afford at 40plus ft,i think it looks more than big enough for one person to live on,any ideas?just in case you want to look at it it's on appollo duck called gili, at gt haywood ,thanks, phil.
  16. after posting this,i've come to the conclusion that if looked after, irrespective of the make you can't go to wrong,in fact a person who simply can't afford the "best" built boat is much more likely to look after his purchase, simply because the money has been harder come by to buy it,the same way you treat a company car/van as apposed to your own,the last thing you want to be doing is paying out a fortune for rpairs caused by neglect,so you keep up regular blacking etc, thus avoiding bills which would be so much harder to meet .so,thanks for all your posts, and i'm sorry if i caused a bit of "agg"for springer owners who rightly defended their pride and joy.phil don't look down on anyone unless your picking them up
  17. thanks for that don't quite understand the poosticks comment but i wouldn't be as reluctant to view these makes as before, phil never look down on anyone unless your picking them up
  18. I am a complete novice in the world of narrowboating,i started to learn the does and don'ts about a month ago when my daughter announced her intention to live on one,i've found out so much in this time i can't believe it.through this forum and asking boat owners, etc i've learned so much i'm fairly confident of buying a decent boat.my problem is i have been advis ed a few times to avoid liverpool ,and springer boats, but i've seen some of both these makes advertised which really seem good buys,i know through the short time i've been looking and learning that colecraft etc, seem to be the benchmark for build quality ,good steel etc,but are these makes i've mentioned that bad,if they've been looked after,i.e.blacked regularly, serviced or are they "budget built" and this will reflect in the longevity of the hull ,i know you obviously have a survey before you'd buy a boat, but most boats are hardly on your doorstep and if these boats mentioned were inferior it would save me a lot of time and money looking at them, thanks, phil

    scam?

Don't know if anyone has seen this but in the last half hour on appolloduck boat sales, there are two boats who's prices can't be real. Any thoughts on this?
  22. i recently attended a motorcycle race meeting at mallory park and wondered why all the crowd had fell asleep, then i looked at the programme and noticed we were in the middle of a ten lap race for narrow boats up to 50ft,i heard later that most of the crowd were initialy looking to buy motorbikes and were hoodwinked buy boat dealers at the entrance.
