  4. So would a 12v only boat not hooked up to shorepower be subject to galvnic corrosion in any way at all?
  5. Thanks for all the answers very interesting stuff! The reason I ask as I am looking at buying another boat that has been a floating caravan for years on hook up so I am a bit cautious although I can see the front anodes in perfect nick and the prop feels nice and smooth. I might pull it into a dry dock and have a closer look. thanks.
  6. Thanks for the reply. Thats were my thoughts are, where do I spend my money? on a bigger output alternator or a charger and generator for example.
  7. Is there any factual evidence that a boat sitting on a hook up for 5 years for example without galvnic protection beyond anodes will be affected? I have heard so many contradicting stories I am starting to wonder what the facts are.
  8. Excuse my ignorance but if I dont have hook up would there be any point in buying a charger? Would another alternator not be a way of charging? thanks.
  9. What one do you have Phil as I need a charger but dont have deep pockets? thanks.
  10. A man who goes on a journey can quiet rightly be called a Journeyman!! Moneyless Man by Mark Boyle is an interesting read.
  11. Thanks Nick, yeah I understand having a boat is all about learning new skills which I am enjoying so far.
  12. Thanks for the replies and confirming that. Is there anyone who can do this for me on the Peak Forest canal as I'M a bit worried or is there a temporary measure to stop the dripping as I'm having to pump out every 2 days? I'M a bit miffed the boat yard I bought the boat from didn't give me a heads up about this despite paying them to service the engine while it was out of the water!
  13. Hi here is a photo http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?app=galleryℑ=6736
  14. Many thanks for the replies. I will take a pic and pop it up tonight. Mine dont have the ''pusher''
  15. Hi my stern gland keeps dripping on the boat I have recently bought and I've noticed while tightening it up there is no packing which may be why it wont stop dripping. Where do I get this packing from and can I do this job on the water without sinking the boat? thanks.
  16. Many thanks. Would you use that with the fire rope to?
  17. So did you also find the compound to be useless as I've used it and will remove it if thats the case? thanks.
  18. Thanks, when you say it dont last well what do you mean?
  19. What is best to safely seal the flue joint between the stove and the flue pipe? I have fire rope and this putty stuff called Purimachos flue jointing compound non setting. thanks.
  20. My thinking is that caravans and motorhomes have floor ventillation so the air movement is different but I may be way off the mark!
  21. Many thanks for the info everyone much appriciated.
  22. I have just bought a co2 alarm rated with the appropiate numbers only to find a little image on the back saying no suitable for boats! Is there somewhere that sells a boat specific co2 alarm or anything else I need to take into consideration? Where exactly should these alarms be placed in the boat? Thanks.
  23. No Alan you mis understaood my post. My proposal is to allow longer over staying on less congested stretches of canal for a reasonable extra fee for those who quiet rightly dont wish to use an expensive Marina (IF AVAILABLE ANYWAY) or have to settle for an unsuitable mooring (IF AVAILABLE ANYWAY)or there are simply not any moorings available but tens of miles of unused stetches of tow path being used for nothing but dog loos and cyclist! Interestingly the naysayers focus on a minority of stretches of tow path where people are overstaying. The bottom line is the current system dont work and its costing money to police and enforce when other options are possible. Life evolves and changes!! Or the hundreds of miles of empty bloody tow paths up and down the country!!!!!!!
