  1. Thanks Zen, the engine is turned off with a button and keys removed. The ignition key has 3 positions, in the first a light comes on, presumably indicating that there are batteries present and showing some signs of function, the second position, the light dims when glow plugs are active and third starts the engine (mostly) I wonder is something could have got stuck causing what you described but i'm pretty sure the engine stopped cleanly with the button and keys were removed and there was no indication (battery/ignition light) of anything staying on. Thanks Tony. Batteries were connected red to red. Starter to a battery in the leisure bank. which consists of 3 bosch batts, 2 years old, appear to be functioning OK. I would say the oily water is definitely that, at first I thought it was dirty water, and remembered that a mechanic filled the water up with canal water, and wondered if it was canal sediment, but the water is oily, I can't imagine what else it is. From the outlet over the top of the water tank there is dark residue, it has dripped down the sides, over some of the nice new electrical fittings. (Which is why I wondered if the starting problems could be related and not separate issues) I havnt added any water/antifreeze for a long time and many hours, so wouldnt have thought overfill caused this. I would like like to think there is still a functioning buzzer if things get too hot. But nothing sounded Thanks Martin
  2. ah ok, in the past i just filled it up to the top, may have spat a bit out but I havnt filled it up for a while so figure all had been spat already - this is oily water, dark residue on top and drooled down both sides
  3. Yep I understand its a marinised Mitsubishi - will carry out checks in the morning and get back to you for advice, I took the water cap off, only about top centimetre had come out
  4. Just had new engine electrics done and hoping boat would be happy for a while A local mechanic had just tightened the gearbox cable, and made a minor adjustment to the engine speed, to stop the engine rattling so much at low revs. Alas I moved the boat everything was fine. Wouldnt start next day. Checked engine bay Must have overheated - overspill residue left on radiator Only the water was oily had leaked down both sides. I jumped the leisure and starter batteries (no ignition lights were coming on as I turned key) ignition lights now coming on, but engine wouldnt engage. I know nothing about engines. But I figure if oil has mixed with the water system, this is very bad & I might have to find ££££ What's the damage peeps? Cheers Mart
  5. Thanks all, i guessed the gearbox oil was OK, because if it wasn't it would effect forward backward equally? I say Guess coz reaaly don't have a clue, I'd assume last person that serviced it checked it, but it due a service now
  6. I have a 3 pot sole diesel engine (Marinised Mitsubishi) couldnt tell you what gearbox type/manfacturer is - I dont know much about engines so guesing its time to rejoin RCR, I'm just hoping nothing expensive awaits
  7. Ah, Broken down today on Gloucester Sharpness nr Saul, put it into reverse to slow as approaching bridge, and then, no forward gear would engage, backwards is very responsive, nothing going forward at all. If i move the gear lever back and forth, it looks as though the cable is moving everything it should - What do i do to fix this? cheers, Mart
  8. Has anyone made a good video on this? twould be watched by many over the years
  9. Looks like you'd shotblast first Interesting that it states when bitumen cannot be used. Does that mean it's inferior? or just an alternative? Thought i'd give this thread a bump as this might be a good and well priced product, any thoughts? Sherwin-Williams Macropoxy® M535 Pitch Free Underwater Coating Material Type: Single pack, pitch free, vinyl copolymer resin based underwater coating Recommended Use: Provides anticorrosive protection when applied onto blast cleaned steel. To be used in situations where coal tar pitch products are excluded on health and safety grounds or where bleed through of pitch into topcoats is not acceptable.
  10. Will be heading to Gloucester in a couple of weeks from Milton Keynes - Obvs a few ways of going about this, different journey options - Anyone any advice? the route they would take, the route they definitely wouldn't take? Thanks! Martin
  11. so - mi cratch cover has been rejuvenated, new windows, stitching, points of attachment - which is good - but the canopy is the wrong colour and has been evr since the boat was painted 3 years ago - I'm told you can get paint for PVC, but is it suitable for boat canopies - would it be one of those jobs you regret as it peels and looks rubbish? anyone any experience? Thanks. Martin
  12. Between MK & LB is willowbridge marina/diy boat yard - not sure if you'll find someone or not based there, but probably some handy people on site, so might be worth enquiring, also on your way to Darren, at the nearside of the tring cutting is Bates boatyard, Jem Bates
  13. Mike, that would explain it - dodgy photo - it just appears to be hovering over the top, I assumed the collar must have broken
  14. Oh no – anyone got any advice? I let a friend stay on my boat for 2 days, and he somehow managed to separate the flue from the top plate, I’m not sure how the fitting should work, so not sure how to fix it, I tried fixing it with that heat clay but that failed, the flue doesn’t sit naturally over the hole, it requires pressure to keep it in place, it has a back boiler, lots of plumbing, so moving the unit is not preferable to moving the flue – Do I just need a new cuff or topplate or some other fix, can you take off the top plate really? I would have though these things become jammed with heat over the years Any advice appreciated Cheers Martin

  16. I have the Liebherr A+++ - looking good so far - I noticed a 0.09V drop when I first turned it on - 3 80watt solar panels appear to be giving me enough still but suspect as smiley pete says an extra panel in autumn may be required - thanks to all for advice on this Ta Martin
  17. Hi all I'm thinking of adding some length to my boat by getting the fore deck extended - currently the boat is 45ft I have lots of kit that I could take out of storage within the boat and store in bench cabinets on the well deck, plus getting bikes up and down from the roof is OK for me but my girlfriend is 5ft (just) - dry place to stock pile coal and wood for winter, I could imagine being a nice roomy place to spend time in OK weather - perhaps adding an extra 5ft to the existing deck initial thoughts How well will the boat sit in the water? Ballast? Much much cheaper than extending the cabin section right? Will it be strong enough for craning? Any insights experience appreciated Thanks! Martin
  18. Thanks Pete - Genius! That may swing it back - I wonder what it draws from the batts on a cold wash?
  19. Thanks all - we would as a family benefit from a proper sized ladar fridge - and I think my set up can cope - we may consider a marina next winter anyhoo with a little one onboard. The liebherr it is I now have to find a twintub and seeing as I have saved a few thousand pounds today - time for a comfy new chair Anyone in love with a particular twin tub, please let me know my inverter is 600w but it wouldn't be end of the world if it needed upgrading a little for a decent twin tub. Thanks Mart
  20. Ha! - true true So I'm starting to cop out of these big plans I'm thinking keep my existing set up - buy a 12v fridge and a twin tub. nothing else required. existing inverter is 600psw. An Engel fridge is 0.5-2.5amps costs £845 (ouch). Reading Amazon reviews every twin tub in existence is crap - so not sure where to go with that just yet
  21. OK so this wont be news to almost everybody here - but i didn't know, so perhaps it will be useful for somebody else The inverter - doing what it does to 12v to make 240v takes 20x the current (as 20* the v from 12v to make 240) So a 3kw kettle that takes 13ah - takes 260 at 12v going through an inverter So presumably with that handicap - no 240v appliance could ever compete with a 12v appliance but i guess with microgeneration where its at now and the efficiency of 240v appliances (and things becoming more affordable) - things are more possible than ever before
  22. lol - its because of kids I live in a boat - an inverter that is also a charger - that's baked my melon - goes googles
  23. Thanks Paul C, I've not come across travelpower before - goes and googles Jambo do you know how our fridge at 16Ah compares to a 12v compressor fridge? I cant find figures for comparison. If it draws similar ah then there is no longer an argument for that technology really? unless perhaps cost of inverter was included in the calculation ta Martin
  24. Nbinnisfree - that is a beefy system, ive noticed more generators on the market recently, prices coming down significantly. Maybe the door isn't completely closed for one, id just be concerned that a bad gen would be a frustrating experience - Hyundais might be ok, but how well do they compare to the ever reliable Hondas (that are too expensive) Thanks Jambo - great advice re larder fridge and website - the very top efficiency rated larder fridge is just affordable full domestic size, 240v rated at A+++ http://www.liebherr.com/HG/en-GB/region-UK/products_hg.wfw/id-1555088-0_46573-0 Energy consumption in 24 h* [kWh / 24h] = 0.169 Thanks old goat, its not a big old torquey lister I'm afraid - its a marinised Mitsubishi, sole diesel, about 25hp, I hope it will still push the boat reasonably well on the canals. not planning any river work. Arthur Brown thanks! will work my way through that book I don't know what 0.169 means in context!
