  1. Hello! Thanks for the replies, I only get to look at them on my lunch and after work. I'm not sure if my photos make it look worse as this is only on one side and the section is probably 3 feet in total. So I'm looking at the two-pack epoxy option but this will mean getting it shot-blasted. I'm on the Kenent&Avon by saltford, I'm aware of a few yards but if anyone knows anywhere on that stretch that will undertake shot blasting then I'd be grateful to hear. I'm familiar with the costs of getting a standard coat of bitumin but how much would the shot blasting involve bearing in mind we're only talking about a 25 ft narrowboat here? Thanks again Phil
  2. I wouldn't be surprised if a very thin coat had been used. I'm seriously considering going for the two pack epoxy next time, shame everything has to be removed first! I think I'll attack it and remove what I can then treat with bitumin, and aim to get it re-blacked eraly next year, just too busy with work to take time off to cruise it for 5 hours to the nearest yard that'll do it. It's only very recently that I have noticed the rust (I don't get down to visit it very often these days)!
  3. Hi there, I'm aware this is a common issue given the constant exposure to air and moisture, however, I was a little surprised to see this happening in a few areas around the waterline given that my boat is only 16 months old. There could be many reasons, electrolytic corrosion, mill scale flaking off from underneath, abrasion etc, however, the anodes seem OK and I'm rarely on the shore line, in any case, I have a galvanic isolator. My plan was always to get it re-blacked at two years so has anyone got any recommendations on what to do in the mean time? I've heared about using Fertan whilst others have simply suggested coating with some more bitumastic. I've attached some photos Thanks Phil
  4. Not sure if you can tell from the photos but the rust stops quite suddenly, this rusty area is just on the other side of the engine bilge, from what I can see the bilges are separate, there are no pluming leaks either so I've no idea where it would have come from, given that its only a year old and seems dry perhaps it was just a damp area when the builder was fitting the ballast and plywood floor. It terms of treatment I can get about half an arm down there so very hard to do a decent sweep. I've heard of using waxoyl but if my chemistry degree has taught me anything then it tells me that if water was to get back in there then the oil will prevent it from having a means to evapourate

  6. Hi Blackrose, ignore my use of irrelevant phrases, I've got a few photos but still trying to get them to link in. It's more of a dusting really, I've sent my photos to another builder who has been helping me with questions throughout my fitout and he seems to think there's nothing to be concerned about so long as, as you say, that it is dry, which it appears to be. He also recommended adding a few holes under the bed, kitchen etc to allow it to vent
  7. Hi thanks, i will try and upload some photos later although I can never seem to get them to work!
  8. I had a small water leak so I asked the builder whether it was worth inspecting, he said it was painted so there shouldnt be a problem but other than that I'm not sure what the finish was I'm afraid
  9. Hi, thought I'd cut an inspection hole to check for any water in the cabin bilge. None that I could see but I was surprised to see that there was a great deal of surface rust on the top of the bottom plate? Its only a year old so this seems a little odd?
  10. Super, thanks, I wasnt getting anything obvious but will try those. Out of interest, where do people get their engine and gear box oils?
  11. Hi, Trying to locate a suitable oil filter for a barrus shire 14 20hp Barrus keep recommending various chandlers who haven't been too much help so far! According to the service schedule the ref number for the part is 119305-35151 Any help greatly appreciated, Thanks
  12. Hi, I'm nearing the end of my fit out and finally coming to deal with the window frames. Having been focusing hard on other things it's only really just come to my attention that the steel immediately surrounding the perimeter of the window has no spray foam insulation (the insualtion goes up to the battens bordering the windows). What with the condensation it has gone a slight shade of rust, so would it be worth spraying a coat of hammerite over these small areas? Cheers
  13. Cheers Bee, B&Q do a universal bitumin paint so I may give the entire but above the waterline. As for the weed, I read another thread on this topic and a rubber brush was recommended, probably because I'd imagine it isn't too abrasive. I'll have a go with this but I'm not sure I'll get a decent tilt to be able to paint at the waterline!
  14. Ha, there are 2 swans that have a go, but they are too unreliable and most of the time peck my heels when I'm working on the side
