  1. Hi All After a year or so as a landlubber I am returning to my boat. My current moorings on the Shroppie are too far to travel to my new job Nr Lichfield. I am looking for quiet moorings local to Lichfield/Whittington but preferably not in a marina. I do need somewhere quietish as I work nights. Hope to hear from you soon Phil ps if anyone is looking for moorings on the Shroppie (High Onn) let me know
  2. Thanks for all your input, very much appreciated. I don't wish to sell my boat and intend living aboard in the future. I think this is an opportunity to get the old thing out of the water and get a few things done over the time I am not aboard. Anybody need a rural mooring convenient to Stafford area? Feel free to get in touch. Regards Phil
  3. Many thanks for the advice folks, much of which has been taken on board. What I have decided to do is continue to pay the land owner whilst I consider the alternatives. Cheers Phil
  4. Hi again. As previously mentioned I wouldn't wish to cause any grief for my friends and neighbours on the moorings and will probably move the boat to a new mooring rather then create an atmosphere. As previously mentioned for very similar money I could relocate to a marina. If anybody is looking for a rural mooring on the Shroppie just south of Gnosall amongst an established liveaboard community feel free to pm me. Cheers Phil
  5. Thanks for that Dave. As I said that is my understanding. If I owned the field I probably wouldn't like it either lol aren't we just. No I intend travelling and have the possibility of a professional engineer visiting regularly by boat to look after my boat. What if I chose to cc for a year and pay CaRT for the home mooring but didn't require the access?
  6. This is certainly a consideration and one that I am sorting out. I was really interested in the legal issues and not happy about being potentially bullied, As I said I may well get the boat stored off the water and save my neighbours any grief . The moorings have been a happy place for me and I think the situation reflects poor planning by the landowner who perhaps should have set the moorings up in a more formal way as suggested by b0atman Thanks for that. I have thought about it and may well take this route selling the boat with the benefit of a mooring. I do love my boat though :-( Incidentally. The replies and suggestions are very much appreciated and confirm what an amazing bunch boaters are and how awesome this forum continues to be :-)
  7. Thanks for the speedy replies. It may be that I do just move the boat to another mooring to save my good friends and fellow boaters any possible anxiety. b0atman: This is what would be the simplest solution but the landowner has never been interested in sharing their revenue. In fact there used to be a on site mooring manager, also a liveaboard. The landowner has let the manager go to save money and devolved day to day responsibility to a commitee made up of boaters using the moorings. I actually don't want any hassle but the implied possibility of my boat being removed concerned me The landowner just owns the field that we cross to get to the mooring with CaRT owning a strip alongside the canal
  8. Hi All My boat is currently moored on an end of field mooring. I pay CaRT for the mooring at 50% (£675 pa)of nearest official mooring rate and have been paying the landowner monthly (£110) for access and water. Total cost has been £1995 pa I have advised the landowner that I will not be requiring access for 12 months due to a change in circumstances and it has been my intention to leave the boat where it is with a view to picking up the access charges again when required. The landowner is, understandably, miffed. There has been mutterings about removing my boat and letting the mooring to somebody else. The mooring itself is on decking that overhangs the canal rather than actually on the farmer's land. I actually own the decking etc. My argument with the landowner has been that I own the decking and pay CaRT for my boat occupying the water space and, in my opinion, the landowner can not remove my boat and occupy my property without my expressed permission. My additional understanding is that the landowner has responsibility up to the fence line above the mooring. The landowner has previously advised that they are not responsible for any work below the fence line. Previously they had declined to sort out trees below the fence line stating that it was not their responsibility. I would prefer to leave the boat in situ whilst continuing to pay CaRT. I invite your views and thanks in advance. Regards Phil ps the landowner is not troublesome and this is a new situation for both of us. If all else fails I am aware that I could just sell on my decking and at a similar (£2k pa) price park my boat up in a marina. This is real consideration as my liveaboard neighbours are a tad concerned about my situation and how it may effect them.
  9. Hi. I haven't really made my mind up fully but may be selling my 56 foot liveaboard with a rural mooring in the new year. Regards Phil
  10. I bet the wheels have gone off the pram though. (I'll get my coat)
  11. Thanks for the offer. Unfortunately the distance is a killer. :-)
  12. Thanks for all the replies :-) The boat is 56ft and 16 tons (slightly more when I'm on it )
  13. No probs Carl and thanks for the pointer junior, I have been quoted .73p per foot per week at one boat yard which is similar to what I'm paying for my licence and moorings so there would be no financial advantage if that is the going rate ie over 2k per year for a 56 fter
  14. Hi All After 6 years as a live aboard I am going to pursue some other interests for a while. I'm thinking of pulling my boat out of the water for a year or so and wondered if anybody knows of any suitable facilities on the Shroppie? Preferably close enough to my current moorings (High Onn) Many Thanks Phil

  19. Very true. I'm a liveaboard on the Shroppie. Just been refused a Co Op bank account due to an adverse Experian report, despite having 150k in my existing current account (house sale). I checked and my rating is excellent 985/1000 but I'm not on the electoral roll at the mooring. We put a post box on the moorings and I have succeeded in changing my address with the inland revenue, the dvla, existing bank and have just been issued a new passport :-) Cheers Phil When I registered the mooring address I put in the details of the land owner ie postcode and chose their address and then when asked if there was any suffix to the address put "The Moorings" which was accepted. Phil

  22. Whoops - sorry about that! I'll be gone soon - promise! Absolutely no probs at all. As always I've enjoyed my stay at Oxley. The hospitality has extended to fixing me up with shoreline and heating as well as a very convivial little bar and the general good vibe. Hope everything goes well aboard Marcellus - awesome paintjob btw.
  23. Orph runs a rare breed of boatyard - he keeps you in constant contact - emails with photo attachments have kept us in the loop - and if it wasn't for the unforeseen problems, he would have finished in the agreed time. It's a pity that the restorer cannot be named on here, but the towpath telegraph is a unique phenomenon and will be very effective. If anybody is considering some engineering works - I would recommend Oxley Marine. We now have the boat running and will now conduct some trials at the weekend - so all fingers are crossed Orph has serialised our tale of woe in his article on Narrowboatworld here and here There are a further two instalments to go! Hiya. so pleased that your engine is finally ok. I'm currently moored up at Oxley awaiting a new stove being fitted. The stove fitting has been somewhat delayed due to your engine situation . However, I agree, the crew at Oxley are a rare breed of boatyard and I use them for all work on my boat. Orph and Phil are stars and though work has backed up over the past few weeks they have looked after me superbly. Best Wishes - Phil
