  4. Thanks for your post, I would have thought this could have beeen sorted by now too. This is the second time I have posted on this query and back in August I was advised to use the report method which I did to no avail! How do I send a PM? I'm not very good at the technical stuff I'm afraid. Many thanks Jackie

  6. Hi can anyone advise me how to change my display name. When I registered a few years ago I chose a display name, having not used the site for a while I recently had to request a password reset. This was actioned but when I log in now I do not have the display name I used to have, and I would like to change back to it. Many thanks
  7. Thanks to all for your replies. We have booked the boat in for Dec/Jan. It will be under cover but not sure about heaters! We are only concerned because of comments from "wise old sage" at our marina who advised we must be mad to get it done then! Always someone to put their three penorth in !! Anyway think we will stay with the dates as lets face it if moisture is the issue when is a good time in this country? Thanks again
  8. Thanks Daniel, I will try the report option!Any probs and I will get back to you. Don't understand why my screen name has changed. i must have hit the wrong button somewhere! Regards Jackie
  9. Hi can someone help me change my display name. I registered a few years ago but havent used the site for a while so forgot my password. Entered my email address to retrieve the password and managed to log on again but my actual name shows on my posts and not the name I used before, if that makes sense! As you will gather I am not very computer literate! Many thanks!
  10. We are planning a repaint and were thinking of getting the job done over the winter when we would not be using the boat. Would this be a good time, we are concerned about the weather having an effect on the finished job. How long does it take for the paint to harden? We had our last boat painted in the summer, but found that the ropes rubbed the paint off within the first month. Don't want to make that mistake again!
  11. OOps sorry about above! need to get to grips with the controls!! Thanks for all your replies they have answered a few questions. One more though>>>>>>> should the inverter be switched off when not in use? We have just been leaving it on all the time whether hooked up or not. Will certainly go for domestic tv and save some money there. Cheers all!
  12. Hi, Can someone explain the inverter in laymans terms!! Our first boat and we have a mastervolt dakar 12v/1500w/65a combi, whatever that is! I understand you need the inverter to run 240v appliances is that right? As there are different size inverters what is the advantage of a bigger one and does ours sound big enough!!! Also is there any advantage to having a 12v tv? Have looked around and they are expensive. We have been using 240v portable but it is on the blink and we wondered if it was the boat electrics. Brought it home and still has problem, so can't be the boat. Cheers
  13. Thanks for advice, think we will leave the grit blasting and take option 2!! Is it crucial to leave for 2 weeks before boating? we will have to move the boat from the boatyard at least. had plans for couple of weeks afloat in july. autoglym has been recommended so will probably use this unless the bloke is reading this and can advise of his product!!
  14. Went to see the painter today, the grey spots when scratched reveal rust underneath. His options are gritblast which he advises will be expensive and time consuming or removing the exsisting paint with a grinder?? Is that right ? I must admit couldn't take it all in! And then "padding out " and using two pack ??? He did say he could not guarantee that the spots would not come back, but it was a cheaper option and as the boat is 10 years old and never been painted before it may be that it will last longer. He does not do the gritblasting himself, would have to be done elsewhere. Think we will go with the cheaper option and cross our fingers! Any suggestions on what to do with the new paintwork i.e. wax protection?
  15. Thanks for reply, looks like the job is going to be bigger than we thought! We are going to talk with the painter and inspect the boat tomorrow so will keep in mind what you have advised.
  16. we decided to have our 10 year old boat re-painted as the touch -up job we had planned last year didn't take place and the boat was starting to look a bit tatty especially where we had rubbed down, primed but gone no further. had a call from the painter to advise there is more work than originally planned. certainly not huge rust problems visible but there are greyish spots on the cabin sides which they say are corrosion and that the best course ofaction is to gritblast first.as the paint job is costing an arm and a leg we don't want any added expense it at all possible. However I understand the painters dilema as he doesn't want to do a botched job at the risk of his reputation. As we are planning to sell the boat next year we are a;so in a dilema!!! Anyone any ideas what the grey spots could be? They don't look like rust to us and we thought sanding would be enough to eliminate them, obviously not the case.
  17. We have a similar problem! When we bought the boat, and being novices, we set off for the first journey withl friends on board, confident that we would know when the loo needed changing as the light would come on! Not the case, and ended up a bit of a mess to clean up when one of our friends advised the loo looks rather full!! It never worked but we became vigilant and no more mishaps! Then one day we noticed the light on when the loo empty! Now ours seems to work in reverse, so when the light goes out it's time to change cassette! Think we will leave well alone at the moment don't fancy investigating further!!
  18. Thanks to all for yor comments, Think we will get a valuation on the boat as it stands and then ask if a new paint job would increase that price. I suspect as you all say that it won't by very much if at all. It may though attract more interestand get a quicker sale. Thanks again
  19. Some advice needed please about repainting our 50 ft boat. The boat is 10 years old and we have had her for 18 months, the paintwork is looking very tired and had been patched up by the previous owner, not too badly, but as novices to boating we have given her a few bashes and the rust has started. We contacted a local painter with a view to getting the gunwales repainted and any other bits patched up. He has come back with a quote for the gunwales and a quote for a whole repaint job including blacking 4k. We do not have the time or expertise to do a good job ourselves and we are tempted to get the whole job done as we are probably going to sell in the near future and get a bigger boat. Do you think we would increase the value of the boat by a new paint job or are we completely barking mad to think of spending that much money on a boat we are not going to keep! It may be that repainting will only make the boat more sellable but not increase the value, which I suppose is still not a bad option. Your thoughts please!
  20. Further to my previous post and all your replies, our boat has been out of the water again and another coat of blacking applied. The first one flaked off so marina agreed to re do. I suspect all they have done is slap another coat on as is still flaking. spoke to a boat builder recently re this and he suggested may be that the original blacking is not consistent with the new products used. Anyone think this is a possibility? And anything we can do to resolve? Cheers Jackie
  21. Thanks for all your replies. Nice to know, in your experience, we are right to be concerned. Our marina have agreed to take the boat out of the water and have a look, so hopefully we can get this resolved and learn some lessons! Thanks again Jackie
  22. This will seem a silly question, but as novice boaters I will ask anyway!! Our first boat, 8 years old, and we had the blacking done last November. We have only been out 3 or 4 times since then and we have noticed that the blacking seems to be flaking off above the water line. As I say we are not experienced boaters but not too bad in the boat handling so not all due to contact with the lock gates! Really disappointed as expected it to last a bit longer than a few months seeing the cost of having it done!Perhaps we are being too fussy! Your comments appreciated! Jackie
  23. Thanks we will try the tv at home. Thanks Mark,as I am chief cook and bottle washer and of course lock operator! I know nothing of the mechanical workings ! I will ask the skipper re the battery charging thing and get back to you! We are both novices to boating so a bit green! I have my uses though and the advantage that I can use the internet, so one up on the other half! We will try the tv at home and this may eliminate one possible cause. Jackie
  24. Hi, We have a 240v portable tv and we connect to an ordinary house aerial when we are watching whilst in the Marina and connected to the hook-up electric. Picture is fine for about 40 mins and then we get distorted picture, If we switch off for a while and re-connect picture is ok again for a while. Could this be to do with the inverter?
  25. our first boat and was taken out of the water and blacked in january. have only been out 3 or 4 times since then and although we are novices have not suffered too many bashes! have been undercoating prior to repainting the gunwales and have noticed that theblacked area above the waterline seems to be flaking in parts Is this normal or the result of a bad job with the blacking? I thought the blacking was supposed to last a couple of years. Any suggestions?
