Is your boat narrow beam (6-10).If it is a Freeman, they made very few narrow beams. The usual Freemans were 7-6.

This may limit you to wider canals.

As for spares, tools, spark plug, spare throttle cable, gears are usually a pole sticking up through the floor.

The narrow beam Freemans had a weed hatch,if yours hasn't,then I don't know how you would clear the prop.

    Wet suit and snorkel??

    Yes.

Should just have deferred til next year. If everyone is alive and well, next years (annual) trip is paid for.

Forget the money aspect. Money was always spent. It;s memories that could have been made that are lost.  Thats noones fault.

We were due to be on a boat today with anglowelsh.  I knew it wasnt going to happen.

i waited, they called, i rebooked. Next years trip sorted.

That is very commendable on the part of Anglo-Welsh. I have sympathy with them as they still have current expenses, wholly or partly covered by your payment for this years holiday (which you are not taking). When you take next years holiday, they will have no income for that week but still have the associated expenses!

Yes but at the end of the day they have not delivered and therefore the deposit monies should still be available for return. Even if less an admin charge given the circumstances. That is why I believe deposit monies should be ring fenced.

But they have ‘not delivered’ not through any fault of their own. This really is an unprecedented, global, situation. I think we should view this pragmatically. I am happy with a voucher. I should have been on the Broads last week. It didn’t happen. As the previous poster said, ‘next years holiday is sorted’!

This our ours, dipstop not cheap but very secure, can highly recommend

We also have a Dipstop locking cap. Excellent piece of kit. BUT...... the keys (2) are made of a very soft metal and I sheared one off in the lock. It was a bugger to remove. I have emailed and phoned DIPSTOP on numerous occasions to try and get a replacement, to no avail. And I tried many key cutting companies. No success as it is a unique design key and they can’t get the blanks. So I have to be VERY careful now with my only spare! ?

How much do you pay for you insurance?

My last renewal was about £220 if I recall correctly. They, GJW, started offering free RCR about three years ago. It didn’t affect the premium. It is only the basic level of RCR cover but I was paying about £120 a year for bronze membership. I had been paying RCR for about 5 years and never had to call them out. So far I have saved about £360 so that will go quite a way towards any repair bills should they be needed. I figure that at least with basic membership I have a point of contact should I have a breakdown.

  5. If you are heading north up the G.U. and still haven’t got it sorted, there is a good canal boat oriented engineering works in Braunston. Literally on the canal next to Midland Chandlers. They are very helpful (and creative) and have sorted a couple of similar problems I have had in the past. Very reasonable charges as well.

Unfortunately I cannot remember their name as I just used to pull in and moor up alongside them. It is a very small industrial complex between Midland Chandlers and the Boathouse Pub/Restaurant. I think Days Afloat marine engineers are in the same complex.

Anyone know who I am talking about?

Does the boat version come as cassette or pump out?

Pump out only. The cassette version was discontinued years ago. Replaced by the cd, then the dvd. Now everything is downloaded from the web! ?

Good thing I brought a  big  computer screen home from the office today  - its all set up now.

For me work from home  is possible.  Not what I have been doing that last few decades and probably difficult , but possible.

An ideal solution for those now working from home.....

The greater risk as I see it is advertising a 200 odd gpb device with two sim cards in it by waving it around high in the air. Though all your antennae seem to have not been stolen right?

To date, after several years, I have not had the aerial stolen. But if I am leaving the boat unattended for an extended length of time then it is easily removed and stored inside.

If you are concealing your expensive router inside an anonymous looking box them no one would know what it is anyway.

Apologies, I get lost when threads go above 4 or 5 pages!!

Is it the Teltonika RUT955 that you have? I see Solwise sells it through Amazon for 191 gbp, it costs a little more on their website (207.41 gbp).

@Dr Bob @rusty69 Do you use the full 5m length that comes with the Poynting? I am a bit worried about the attenuation over that length?

I spoke to a friend who knows networking and suggested that I mount the modem itself in a weatherproof box next to the antenna up the mast. And then run the wifi down over ethernet to a wifi repeater. You get those USB dongles that are mobile modems lacking wifi, but I haven't ever seen something like that that can take an external antenna.

I suppose you could do that with the Teltonika. Just run the WiFi antennae down into the boat cabin. Would attenuation be an issue with that too?

Thanks for the tips I'm slowly starting to learn what some of this means...

Since my original post I replaced the two separate aerials (to get the 4g service) with a single 4g aerial, also from Connex Technologies. https://www.connextech.co.uk/lmo7270-wb-smsm---4g3ggsm-mimo-outdoor-omni-antenna-1153-p.asp

I specified 10m cables (as per the original aerials I fitted) and found it works superbly, even in the remotest of locations.

I don't think 5g will be so widespread in the near future, certainly in remote canal locations, to warrent changing the setup for a year or so yet.

Regarding 5g routers, many routers are labelled 5g when I understand they refer to the frequency, I think 5200mhz, not to 5g, the 5th generatation of the mobile network.

I am not so sure fitting the router itself atop a mast would be a good idea for several reasons. I would think that the routers internal aerial is not as sophisticated as the purpose made ones. I could be wrong on that though. And risk of water ingress and physical damage due to its vulnerable location when continually raising and lowering the mast.

It will be interesting to see the comments you get about this requirement.

    Summary = "Deathtrap"

I think Kudzucraft means something like this, which we had on our semi-trad. The raised seat is in front of the tiller, in the rear, port corner of the cockpit. Opposite is a drawer unit the perfect height to comfortably rest your feet. The throttle falls conveniently to your left hand whilst underway. For us it was a perfect setup for comfortable cruising.

  11. As above.

We have used the Meaco 8DLL for the last eight winters together with an oil filled radiator on a frost setting.

One of the good things about the Meaco is if there is an interruption to the power supply it retains its setting and comes back on its previous setting automatically. Some need to be switched on again manually which is no good if you visit the boat infrequently.

  12. I have been with GJW Direct for about fifteen years and always found their customer service very good, and premiums very reasonable. However I have never had to claim but have heard their record in dealing with claims is also very good.
