  1. As anyone fitted a cocooned generator into a secondhand boat trad/semitrad without an engine room. I just wondered as most seem to fitted into new builds. These are prices I have had back as anyone seen any better deals or are they the same all over Paguro 4000 3.5kw £3933 Fischer panda pms 4000s 3.8kw/4.5kva £3259 + vat delivery Fischer panda pms 5000i 4kw/5kva pure sine wave £5093 Dry exhaust system Fischer panda pms 4500 scb 3.8kw/4.5kva £4212 Whats the best system wet exhaust or dry exhaust and would the boat have to come out of the water to fit a cocooned generator and where can I find a uk supplier for northern lights. Cheers
  2. I had this email back regarding 1500rpm and 3000 units. You have been given information that is not entirely helpful. A 1500rpm generator will be bigger than a 3000rpm unit as it has to make the same power at half the speed. You probably only need 3-4kVA and the 1500rpm units tend to only exist in 6kVA or bigger due to their higher cost of manufacture as they are using multi-cylinder engines. Next, a 3000rpm generator is better if you use it for only an hour or two each day as it warms up more quickly and creates oil pressure faster at each start. A 1500rpm machine does not like to be used for short runs – it prefers to run all day. Note that a 3000rpm unit can run all day without issue. In conclusion, 1500rpm machines are bigger, more expensive and should be employed where they have to run all day – under some reasonable load. 3000rpm machines are, as such, much more popular for leisure users who only need small amounts of power and run the machine sporadically. The life of 3000rpm machine is not (contrary to statements made on the web) half of that of 1500rpm machines. Their life is at worst 15% shorter and usually, because they warm up and create oil pressure more quickly and are used under load more often, they have a longer life! I think the Paguro 4000 is the right choice as it is only a little more than the 3000 and it is extremely popular for this purpose (actually we have sold more 3000s to the inland waterways – but I think the 4000 give you a good increase in power for a tiny increase in price). So where do I go from here perhaps down the pub for a re think
  3. Just wondered how many anodes should be on a 70ft boat I thought 4 was the norm But the boat in this thread as 8 and I have seen one boat advertized fitted with 12 ! So would it depend on length to how many anodes are fitted. And is it important to have a galvonic isolater fitted in all cases.
  4. If you have unlimited internet and a good signal why not use your iphone for the radio. Use an app called tunein radio it gives you countless radio stations from all over the world and you can save them as favourites, they are still saved if the phone is switched off. You can also type in what sort of music you like and it gives you the stations that deal with that sort of music. I connect it through a jack plug in the car it saves listning to local radio etc. As for cd,s why not load them onto your phone it saves storing cd,s
  5. If you have a smart phone I noticed there was an app called satellite finder free in the market place as seen in one of the canal monthly mags I don,t know how good it is though. Probably worth a try.
  6. Thanks Keith Just emailed for information on fischer panda generator probably need a sit down before I open the email about the price. If you went for a semi trad could you get a cocooned gennie in the engine bay or would it be to tight to work on everything.
  7. I recall reading about 1500rpm and 3000rpm generators somewhere on here but can,t find it now can someone put me in the right direction or just tell me which one is the best and why. And which is the better most reliable cocooned generator to look for. Cheers
  8. House I agree with you spacebar, we are born, grow up and go to work some take out mortgages chipping away for 25 years making the banks richer. If we need to go into care the government take the house what we have been working hard to pay for and improve and use the money for our care. Thats unless you are lucky then your children benefit from all your hard work and graft. When we got married nobody gave us anything and both of my lads have said enjoy it while you can. So thats what we are going to do, at 50 we are buying a boat and trying a different way of life we don,t expect it to be easy, we are both grafters. At least I will not be sitting somewhere in the future thinking I should of done that. And who knows the value of scrap may go up that much the boat could be worth more dead than alive. lol. And the house, that will swallow some more money from the next person who wants to change its insides and pay the mortgage. work, shuffle, shuffle, work work Generators I have looked into the Paguro 4000 generator not quite sure they seem to have been going a long time, I did see a boat fitted with a Sincro generator but I can,t seem to google anything but I do not know what the reliability and spares are like for either.
  9. I was on the understanding that there are only a few places up north you couldn,t pass with a 70ft boat but it sounds it could be tight in a few other places. would i encounter any difficulties getting a 70ft narrowboat to gloucester from crick, bath, stoke etc. i am going to be buying a boat and a 70ft was an option for maximum liveaboard space. i did note that one lock in kiderminister when i drive past looks tight for a 70ftr. cheers
  10. No this is not a trader. I will be going to see it in a couple of weeks so I will let you know the verdict
  11. As anyone heard of a paguro generator or sincro generator are they reliable and what are the spares like ?
  12. Thanks just trying to get things right for when we get the boat, hoping not to run the engine all the while thats why i,m looking into solar and gennies. I can,t remember if I have spoke to you keith moored close to sainsbury,s in Gloucester last year did or do you still drive artics if not, sorry. I do tend to talk a lot on the towpath trying to gain advice and knowledge
  13. Would a Honda EU20i generator run a washing machine and other equipment on board and how silent are they. As anyone had any expierence of this gennie. cheers
  14. Anyone heard of a Sincro diesel generator 11kva just seen one in a boat I was looking at but couldn,t seem to google anything. Reliabilty, spares ? sorry to butt in on the thread but it looks like a thread about gennies
  15. Any help on this one folks. Cheers
  16. I will have to look into that one I thought I was getting good advice from an expert. Cheers
  17. Would you still need to use a regulator if the boat is fitted with a battery management system. One company told me I did not need a regulator with a battery management system and another company told me I did.
  18. So if I looked at spending about a £1000 for two sanyo 250w panels @ £420 each and a 15amp PR20 regulator @ £89 giving me a total of 500w do you think that would be sufficient for a cc
  19. Try the battery megastore at Tewkesbury 01684298800 or google there website I don,t know how there prices compare with ones you have looked at. Just had a quick look, Alphaline 12v 110 £79.95 inc del & vat but they do stock other brands and different sizes.

  21. How efficient to run is the corner bubble oil stove ? Because looking at the last link to the manual shows a cost of 5p per hour with diesel at 20p litre so should it be about 20p - 25p per hour to run, A silly question is it possible to convert a oil stove to a solid fuel burner once all the tank and feeder pipe as been removed if the oil stove did not prove efficient to run.
  22. Whats a substantial amount ? 250 w, 500w
  23. You must be able to benefit from solar when you are a cc especially when you are moored up for your max 14 days. They must have there uses as there seems to be more and more of them on top of houses.
  24. As anyone used the following panels Kyocera or Sanyo I cannot seem to google any reviews. Can you get a fixing kit to allow the panel to lay flat when travelling and then tilt when required or as anyone got any suggestions to make a fixing kit. And would it be better to have two 135w panels or one 250w panel. When we get a boat I would like to fit solar panels to keep the batteries topped up rather than keep running the engine. Quoted £278 for the 135w kyocera panel and £420 for the 250w sanyo panel.
  25. What sort of amps would a mains 130w led tv use, and what solar panels are better the ones that contour to the roof of the boat or the solid flat panels that you can move about and how many or what size panels would you need to keep the batteries topped up. Sorry about asking so many questions in one thread but it saves starting new threads up for this and that.
