  1. Ive had one on my boat for some time now...built it myself for under £100.....works fine ...doesnt smell....AT ALL....go for it
  2. Good point I wonder why they dont make it compulsory to have both a VHF radio and a licence
  3. thanks thats interesting...can I just add that when we did the Trent and the Thames we were told that a vhf was desirable but that a mobile phone would do instead any thoughts on that
  4. We are 68 ft dutch barge style narrow boat, thinking about heading from Aire and Calder to Nottingham. I have just read that someone has got a 70 ft NB through Thorne lock which is listed as under 62 ft we draw about 33inches and are 68 foot with fenders off. Does any one have up to date info, should we go in backwards. We had planned on going from Goole on the ebb tide getting to Trent falls just as the tide is turning and heading up the Trent.. Have been down the Trent as far as Keadby before and managed to get into all 3 locks en route without touching...53 foot boat and watched a lot of you Tube before hand Does anyone have up to date info on Goole to decent safe mooring of stop off on the Trent [little dog will be busting if we cant get her onto dry land at some stage] We have done the tidal Trent, tidal Thames,Avon and Severn so reasonably competent, boat is 3 years old Vetus 43 HP twin cooling skin tanks so overheating shouldnt be a problem. Any info would be great thanks. ps have a hand held vhf... lockie at limehouse told me he had had one for over 20 years and never had a licence....
  5. British Waterways as the name suggests covers British waterways I see someone has posted here about Maori canals........well yes if you choose to believe that.I would have to say that its the first that I have heard of it, it could well be true just as Maori could well be the first settlers in NZ, but really this has nothing to do with the thread
  6. My Knowledge of BW to date is that they would like to cover everywhere, but no, I was in NZ [Godzone] came over to buy a narrow boat for when we relocate to the mother country. Apart from 150 litres of diesel in the bilges, blowing up my inverter, because the fuse didnt blow, bad survey, buying a new lap top that doesnt work having my bank freeze my account cause I am on a narrow boat buying a macerate pump that doesn't work, rental car over charging me, every thing is pretty good. Love this old country, good beer, good people never stop laughing. and slowly I am getting through all the problems , I am part Yorkshire , part terrier, I just keep on and 9 times out of 10 I win. Dont loose your cool, dont take no for an answer and write to them every day. Who in there right mind wants a Yorkshire man on there case every day
  7. Briefly there were a few smaller issues that I would let ride. The big issues are, the gas locker was corroded all the way through and even had holes through to the sleeping quarters, life threatening I would say, when I had the boat safety done it was noted that there was bad rusting around the fuel tank and that filler had been used at some stage to curb a leak, the weed hatch had to be replaced as it was down to 1 mm in places and the swim had to be overplated. Talking to the surveyor now, he wants me to get in touch with his insurance co, I would have thought that was his job. Would never consider legal action, the only winners are lawyers, but small claims has worked for me in the past My view is that if the BSS inspector spotted it so should the surveyor
  8. When I bought my boat I had an out of water survey done by an accredited surveyor recommended to me by the marina where I bought the boat. It has been pretty bad and to date has cost me thousands on putting right things the surveyor didn't report. What can I do.
  9. That thought had been going through my mind, one option I was thinking of was misty river on the side fading into blue blck starry night for the roof, then I could just have a ribbed rubber strip down the centre for a walkway. But I do take you point its a very valid one and it could well be better to paint the night sky. Thanks for the interest.
  10. Nice misty shot, but not sure about the boat, thanks anyway Hi TWBM, yes I know, Im going to have to be careful and see how it goes, it is only going to be the sides and poss the roof and not the hull so Im hoping it will work, If it does its a hell of a lot cheaper than a pro paint job, will keep the forum informed. Cheers
  11. would love to but Im in New Zealand at the moment and I cant get that wonderful quality of light and mist that you find in the UK and France. I have ammased hundreds of images but I am looking for just the right one. I will be back in the UK in June and on AM for the summer so if all else fails I will try and get some photos then. Thanks. Hi Bargiepat the area just above the locks is fabulous, the mist and the light. When I get what I want it is going to have to be stretched to over 40ft long by about 4 foot high, I have to get it just right for something that size, but I think if it is well done it could look great. If you can resurect your last pic without the font] can you send it to me in as high a resalution as you can to florimondo@gmail.com Many thanks
  12. There is no way on earth that you could have I just wanted to inform you that I had seen your picture, thank you for sending it and inform you what I was looking for in more detail. If you could see my post before I wrote it perhaps I should have a picture of you on the boat instead of Merlin.
