If we're talking about the same thing, that looks like a protective (!) for the cill - essentially a hefty metal plate bolts to some hefty timbers, that 'floats' (in as much as its not tightly attached) downstream of the masonry cill to protect the stonework from a hefty clout from streerers like me who come in to the lock too fast. :lol:

 

BTW thanks for the Lappal info, I may be in touch.

Agreed. They are quite common on the BCN for instance, although they are often a lot more worn than that.
