Golden Anniversary

Hi, I wonder if you could help.

 

My folks are due to celebrate (?) a golden 50 years worth of marriage in August. I want to organise a special day for them and the rest of the family (totalling 19 people). One idea is to take them on a leisurely day cruise on a local canal (we live in Stockport, Greater Manchester), combining travel (boat) and rest (pub) and play (something for the kids, perhaps a grassy area).

 

The only vessel we've found so far can accommodate 12 people max. Is there anything large enough for us? Of course, we don't need sleeping berths, just space enough for the 19 of us to move about in for the day. Any suggestions, or pointers as to who to contact, would be very helpful.

I don't know the lie of the land around your area but has any Canal Society got a trip boat you could charter? You may not get to drive but may be a bigger boat option for a large party - just a thought.

For 19 people, self steer isn't an option. You need a boatmaster licence for more than 12.

 

Two options of floating restaurant boats that you could charter spring to mind;

 

The "White Nancy" from Bollington Wharf.

The "Judith Mary II" from Whaley Bridge.

Thanks for the info - hadn't realised the 'more than 12' thing - that explains why I haven't seen any self-steer option for more than 12! Chartering a boat and skipper then is the key. Providing there's a suitable boat local enough. My research so far suggests that I'm going to have to travel further afield (Bridgewater Canal, Salford / Chester / maybe Nantwich) to find a 'pleasure cruiser' type thing - would you agree?
