That is really good news, I thought it might be a Dutch elm disease thing, total wipe out.

Its called plane wilt (Ceratocystis fimbriata f. platini) there is no practical treatment at the moment, it will infect a tree through a bark wound normally in the crown and move down the tree and can take a few years to kill the host but once it reaches the root area if the tree is in an avenue, the infection moves via root grafts with the neighbouring trees, the then can move and very very quickly kill the next in line ( less the 12 months), moving up the avenue at a pace.
