WJM
I am thinking of making a trip up the Basingstoke Canal later this year. I wondered if anyone had any experience of this canal to counter some negatives I have heard. Do you have to be accompanied through every lock by a Ranger or does this just apply to the entrance lock? Is it really hard work with shallows and no landing stages and poor water supply? What is Woking like for an overnight mooring - is it safe etc? Any info much appreciated. Edited May 3, 2007 by WJM
nine9feet
I am thinking of making a trip up the Basingstoke Canal later this year. Can't answer about Woking. Navigation Update - 2nd May 2007 Above is the current navigation status on the Flights and Pounds on the Canal. Due to management of restricted water supply, conservation and Health & Safety it is imperative that the Lock opening and closing times are adhered to, these are posted on our web site and are contained within the attachment. A graph showing the water level trends for 2007 is now available to download via the link in the sidebar on our web site. Engineering work on Rail Bridges is underway in the Ash and Ash Vale area and will proceed with no immediate affect on navigation. We had previously planned a short closure to undertake a trial installation of a dam and drain down at the Ash Vale Station Rail Bridge hole on the 23rd April, this was to verify the existing construction and condition of the canal bed and determine ability to keep dry for later construction work in the autumn, this trial is now postponed until further notice. Deepcut Flight This Flight now has a navigation restriction due to structure failure on the lower gates at Lock 21. This has temporarily been repaired but only restricted and supervised use is possible. This means no passage up the flight, with only limited supervised passage down the flight. Please note that this situation is being closely monitored and a full closure is imminent. New gates have been made and will be fitted ASAP! Please phone the Canal Centre for advice if you need to navigate this section. Please remember there is no upstream passage at the moment. Lift Bridge at Wanborough This bridge has been damaged and awaits repair from the Hampshire County Council Bridges Section. This should be completed in the next two days. Please do not attempt to use it until the repair has been completed. Updates and information will now be issued on a regular monthly basis or as circumstances prevail. WJM
Neil, Any thoughts on mooring in/near Woking - I dont know the area at all - is it 1) Safe, and 2) Nice! Would you reccommend anywhere for overnight mooring? Edited May 3, 2007 by WJM
Neildudman
Hi WJM, Plenty of places really, pretty quiet there too, just keep out of the Town Centre overnight wise. PM me when your coming and I'l compile a list of things to see and do + moor. I may even give you a hand with the locks!. Neil
