Barry
http://www.thisislincolnshire.co.uk/displa...;pNodeId=156139 Todays paper. We've already got one Burton Waters - why do we need another For years I've seen those old and new boats happily moored on Brayford Wharf East and on the University side and they seemed to kind of belong if you know what I mean - they were part of the scenery, almost unchanging. So why do they want to change it? I have no doubt that the Council will say that it is line with the ongoing city centre and Brayford Pool regeneration scheme. But what have we got? on Brayford Wharfe North a line of Bars and eateries designed to attract who exactly? I know it's a new University city but where are the specialist bars and clubs that cater for people who are into Jazz and Blues etc. The places that lift a place from a low life "get pissed quick and hit the night clubs" culture to something a bit more attractive to a wider range of people from different backgrounds. I honestly think that the Council, whilst regenerating these areas, pay lip service to regenerating culture and have more than half an eye on who is going to get the building contract and how much money can the new tenants make in as short a time as possible. So to get back to the brayford pool - If the council are going to build another up-market top of the range marina where are the existing boats going to go? some, no doubt, will be able to afford the undoubtedly more expensive mooring fees but the others? Who will benefit apart from a major building contractor and the people running the show? Will a new marina like that benefit the majority of boat users and local people? I doubt it. edited to say that I've sent a copy of this post (with one word changed) to the editor of the paper - it'll be interesting to see what happens next Edited January 27, 2007 by Bazza2
GRPCruiserman
Only got to Lincoln once, on a fortnight up the Trent from Bingley five rise to Nottingham then back to Stanley Ferry via Lincoln. I object to paying to park my car, let alone my boat!! Wasn't happy but went in the marina by the Gym for the night, had to pay £3 or something. Enjoyed the City, went to look at the Cathedral but left in the afternoon to avoid having to pay another night!! Good petrol access half way back to Torksey though, filled everything up. Fantastic cruise back down from Torksey to Keadby. Those were the days. Still miss the boat, may get another if they ever get the DEFRA business sorted. Supermalc
Again only my opinion, which differs from most people......but I feel it is a shame about Lincoln....a lovely town, spoilt by people. There has just been 'a new 20 year plan'. Why don't they have a PROPER one, even longer. Keep the old city, inside the gates. Bulldoze the rest building houses on parts already built, with areas for work, and areas for shops. All linked by a supertram, monorail, automated pod system paid for by everyone. Make it a proper place for the 22nd century, instead of somewhere for the most people to get on the gravy train, and line their pockets by immigration, of foreign workers, students etc. etc. Manufacturing has had it's day. The world simply CANNOT sustain everyone buying a new car, house and contents every morning (the ultimate aim of the consumer society) So why not be radical, and at least try to make things better, not worse. Here's the Brayford So 10 years ago they build this 'dutch barn' (university) on the southern bank The a few years later fill the northern bank with pubs, so the students can get drunk, then jump on boats moored there at 2am. 2 years ago, it became unsuitable to spend the night on the Northern bank. The first time for 2000 years. And that's progress????? Do me a f*&^%& favour.
