Heard today that the Stanley Arms at Anderton near the Boat Lift has shut. Apparently the landlord's wife died and he couldn't cope.

A huge shame - I have been there a number of times and always had a warm welcome and some great food. It would be great if someone was able to take over but I suspect in the current climate it is unlikely.

I'd be surprised if it stays closed for long, it has always been popular and busy when I've been there, good food too. I'm sure it will be up and running again by the summer.

Hopefully, in time, the landlord may be able to find the strength to carry on after his bereavement.

 

We had some smashing nights in there last summer and it seems almost trivial to say that the steak & kidney pie is the best we have had in any pub.

Panic Stations - I thought for a minute that you meant The Stanley Arms in Patricroft on The Bridgewater Canal ! Absolutely cracking basic street corner boozer with Joseph Holts Mild & Bitter.

 

Note to self - I must try to read posts properly in future !
