Why Do Boats Sink ?

Apart from leaking stern glands I've seen two boats sink in a marina. One was a riveted iron boat that sank in the winter when the water froze between the plates and popped a couple of rivets. The other was a man who put the fresh-water hose in the filler then turned on the tap and went to the pub. He expected to be back after a quick half, but got sidetracked and when he returned his boat had sunk because the filler hose had been pushed off the top of the tank by the water pressure when the tank filled up, and he'd then filled the inside of the boat with fresh water.
