Noisy water pump

Featured Posts

Hi Everyone,

We've got a bit of a problem with our water tank/pump and wonder if anyone can help? Our water system is an old Shurflo one and recently has become really noisy. The water runs fine from all the taps and the shower but the pump makes a really loud noise that continues for anything up to two minutes once the tap has been turned off. It also sometimes makes a noise for a moment or two randomly in the middle of the night. Any ideas?

Thanks so much!

The running in the night sounds like a small leak somewhere. As to the 'running on' issue do you have an acumulator, if so is the bladder OK?

Agreed - mine kept turning on / off briefly in the night a couple of months back - traced it back to a small leak from one of the piping joins in the bathroom. Have you checked your cabin bilge recently? That can be a quick/easy way to check if water is leaking out anywhere.

Hope this helps,

Becky

I'd also agree with the above - if the pump runs on its own, your water system definitely has a leak from the pump or downstream of the pump.

The running-on may be related to an accumulator fault or leak; it may also be the water pump's having to pump up the pressure and overcome the suspected leakage from the first sentence, which will take more time than normal.

Well ALMOST definitely. It is just possible that the leak is internal to the pump, around the valves, so that pressure is lost from the system as water slowly returns through the pump back to the tank. Also, if one of the vaves is sticking, the pump may have difficulty in reaching the pressure needed to make it stop, hence the noisy operation.

Repair kits are available, but I have never had much luck with repairing an old pump and I've always ended up replacing it. Pumps are expensive, if you knopw anyone else with an identical pujp is there any possibility they would do a swap with yuo for a few days? Then you'd know for certain, and at no cost, whether you have a leak and whether you need a new pump
