Engine oil

Featured Posts

Hi again! I want to get some engine oil in for my Ruston but haven't a clue on what type/sort to buy... Any recommendations please?

Cheers

p.s. it's running like a dream again. I'm planning on having "lessons" in some basic mechanics over the next few weeks so you never know I might actually be able to stop asking beginners questions soon! Still not moved to Quorn. I'm heading out next Friday with a neighbour but they're only going as far as Trent Lock so I'm still looking for help between Trent Lock and Quorn as I'm not confident enough to try it on my own (yet).

It's a 2VHT!

Ohh that might be just perfect. I'm going to pop over to see neighbours in a bit to see what time they're setting off on Friday so I can work out how far I can get to with them. Where abouts are you Denis and how long do you reckon it'll take me to where you are?

Cheers

takes me roughlley hic 2 & half hours to get hic to trent lock from dunkirk been drinken hic

Dunkirk? Couldn't find that!!

Took her out for a short trip yesterday and although it was smokey to start with after a short while that improved. Ran like a dream! Unfortunately crew mis-judged the jump to the bank and fell in and completely knackered his ankle. Luckily we were almost back to he managed to limp to do the last two locks and then we used my lovely frozen chicken stock to try and get the swelling down.

I'm going to check/top up oil this week again and anything else anyone suggests?

I know I need to sort out the cratch as I have all the heavy stuff (generator, anchor and wood supplies) all on the same side which I guess isn't helping towards the slight list I have. Other than that it's just a cosmetic tidy up in the week ready for the off. I can't wait!

You will probably need a straight 30 mono grade in a vintage engine.

Most people use Morris's Supreme 30.

Don't use a modern multigrade. They have a detergent in the additive pack which could cause damage in a vintage engine which has never been used with such oils.

I use a Ruston 2VTH and we have a 3VSH. Both perform well on straight 30 SAE. Dont forget the oil bath air filter which has the same oil. I can let you know the oil filter which fits the Ruston original cast type filter if you need one
