Waterways Holiday with a Difference

Did anybody see a TV programme in the week about people having swimming holidays on the River Thames ?

If you didn't, there is a company called Swimtrek who organise holidays for people who want to do long distance swimming.

In the programme, they had a narrowboat acting as a "mother" ship and a small inflatable as a safety boat. The "tourists" which comprised of 3-5 middle aged people were swimming behind the narrowboat and doing about 6 miles a day.

They said it was great, because unlike at the swimming pool they didn't have to keep turning round every 25m or so, but they were disappointed by the clarity of the water ? they should try swimming in the coffee coloured water of some of the canals we have been on !

The highlight of the programme was when a pair of swans came in sight and the male swan got very protective and started for the swimmers. The safety guy and organiser told them to put the n/boat between them and the swan, but a few of them had their heads in the water doing very impressive front crawls i.e. they didn't hear a word he said. Realising the camera was filming this and that the swan was getting closer, he started getting very twitchy...

The look on the face of some people steering a hire boat was priceless.

Great country TV with NB's in it - what more can you ask for !
