HID - high intensity discharge lamps - they use a gas discharge technique and are 5 or 6 times more efficient than normal bulbs and should last 3 or 4 times longer than halogen lamps. But they require some circuitry to "fire" them unlike normal bulbs and halogens. They typically last about 1000 firings (ie: being switched ON)
