Hi there If anyone has any advice on how to transport a 24 m steel Dutch barge from Netherlands to London, I would appreciate it. I am a UK citizen and I’m bringing it back to live. I have a mooring, but I’m wondering what is the best way to transport it. I have a quote by road. It is 42tonnes. The engine is not working at the moment. And it is in a state of repair which I plan to work on . So by water would be tricky. Also does anyone know if I need to pay tax as I have had it for quite some years and am a Uk tax payer , would it be exempt ? any advice (or links) is greatly appreciated as HMRC is not offering any, only helpline that don’t give any solid advice

Hi folks, We're newbies looking at buying a boat (canal boat with an engine rather than sailing boat) in England and taking it to France. (They seem to be better kept here from what we saw last week in France & previously in England!) Does anyone know of reputable providers of transport for taking a boat from England to France please? Is it cheaper to get a transport company to do this rather than ask someone to "sail" it to France? Many thanks in advance.

Hi All, Myself and my partner are purchasing a Widebeam aka A Fat Boat and we are seeking some advice regarding the quest we have ahead. Its currently based near Splatt bridge and the aim is to get it to Watford where we will be starting our journey. Understandably if it had a more slender waist line we could crusie it back over the course of several weeks but as it stand it would be a bit of a tight squeeze Not having the confidence We have spoke to some pilots who were not only exceptionally helpful and friendly (something we are discovering more every day) but have suggested the route by water to get to where we need to go, portishead > Bristol > Bristol > Bath > Reading We were interested if perhaps by land would be another good option and if so would anyone be able to recommend any individuals or companies that could do this. The cost for craning from P & A marina is £492 as it currently stands. many thanks in advance.

Hi, We are hoping to buy a lovely 65ft narrowboat and fingers crossed will complete the sale by the end of November. I then have to consider how to transport her from Stafford area down to London, taking into account winter stoppages. It looks like hatton top lock which re-opens on the 21st of Dec and aspley lock which closes on 6th Jan might be our limiting factors. I can see that its doable to make this stretch in the time frame but I cannot be away from family over Christmas. To cut to the chase, does anyone know a) a boat mover who might do this section over the hols and if I've read the stoppages correctly. Thanks very much in advance! Rosie

Hi all! I'm pretty new to the cut ( last september ) and sadly looks like I will be made redundant from my job of 7 years in the near future :/ I come and have lived in a fairly small village on the K & A. As work is so scarce in my area I have decided to move to Bristol on my boat and as my redundacy pay will only be a small amount (£2000- £2500) will not be able to afford mooring fee's in the near future in all likely hood. As far as work goes I'll do whatever pays the bills but transport is a issus as i do not drive (aside from the barge ) Now to my questions (I have searched as much as I can but getting online can be differcult and thus far have not been able to find much in the way of info and was hoping someone could help me who lived near by or has been in the same sort situation ) 1) Can you moor in bristol its self with out paying fee's if you're willing to move every two weeks inside bristol it's self( I'm a genuine C C at the moment and walk/cycle or bus into my current job) 2) I understand that commuting into Bristol from along the canal is farly easy (from what I've read) but was wondering what the rough cost of buses and trains tend to be and how easy it is to get these ( I figure a hour or 2 traveling a day is ok if the they run early enough ( get you into the city before 8 or 9am)) I'm sorry if these sound like stupid questions but at a bit of a loss at the moment and could do with any and all help. I know the first question is a bit of a no brainer and assume you can't but best to ask right? Thank you and may I say great web site and community, has helped me out with a lot of things these last few months should of joined rather than lurked long ago!

We have been in Ireland with our tug-style, electric narrowboat, Ampère, for 6 months and, despite repeated assurances from well-meaning locals that we would surely sink if we were to venture onto whichever came next of Loughs, Allen, Erne, Ree and Derg, have cruised them all safely by dint of the simple expedient of waiting for calm weather. The Irish waterways are attractive, varied and mostly easy to cruise, and the Irish, their boaters in particular, are most welcoming. We have had a fabulous time and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is considering going. Without for a moment pretending that we know even most of what there is to know, we can also offer some advice to anyone in that position, our principal recommendation being to allow two years, split north and south, rather than the one that we did. However, all good things must come to an end and, although we will be here for another few months yet, we are starting to plan our return to the UK next Spring. If possible, we would be like to reduce costs by sharing transport and/or craning with anyone who wants to bring out a boat from England - or simply crane one in or out in Ireland. We will need to crane out from the Grand Canal, probably but not essentially, at Sallins and need to be back in the UK by the end of the first week of April but are quite flexible about our earliest date. If anyone reading this is interested in sharing, or merely wants to chat about the Irish waterways, please get in touch.

I am a qualified master boatman with over ten years inland waterways experience. Available to move boats any distance inland at a reasonable rate. I am reliable and consistent and can provide references if needed. Happy boating! Peter

Hi I need my boat moving from Thorne in Yorkshire (currently moored with Nationwide Narrowboat Sales) down to Milton Keynes Marina as soon as possible, taking into account winter closures. She is 50', recently fully surveyed and blacked, engine just serviced, full of diesel with a full gas bottle plus anchor and chain if river journeys are required. If anyone is able to do this, please could you reply with a quote or email argrundy@hotmail.co.uk? Many thanks Adam
