Hi all, we’ve recently installed 4 new leisure batteries on our narrow boat. All connections are fine and all batteries, including starter battery, are reading over 12v with a multimeter, as well as on our panel in the boat. After putting isolators back on engine started fine. We let it run for 10 mins then turned it off. When we went to start her again, the engine turned over and sounded like it was trying to start but then gave up. The battery light circled in the picture attached stayed on. Diesel level is fine and we haven’t touched anything else. Any ideas greatly appreciated ?

Could anyone help i/d a general type number for this Lucas / CAV interia starter motor (like the Lucas "M35" designation of starter motors on many 60s British cars). 24 volt, integral solenoid, no front fixing flange but simple banjo clamps. Around 5" diameter, I can't see any markings at present, and don't want to disturb it yet.

Hi Boaters! I am four months in to the lovely world of boating and I have been grappling with my engine not starting for a few months. After eliminating the battery, I realised the reason it wasnt turning over was because the solenoid wasnt connecting to the starter motor. I can now start it if I lift the whole floor up and spark it with a spanner. I am now trying to find out what part I need to get so that I can turn my engine on with the key, and nothing I type into the interweb seems to be right. My engine is BMC 1.8L The starter motor is LUCAS 198, b790 12V ER (that's everything written on it) The solenoid I cant see anything written on it. Do I need a new 'connector' between starter and soenoid? Do I need a new solenoid althogether? Is there a standard model? Any advice or nudges in the right direction would be great, kind of determined to see this one to the end myself! Best, Iona Moaner and the Empire Queen

Hello hello lovely people, and a happy bonfire night to all! == As is often the case I have spent many an hour scouring the internet and googling like mad over these past few weeks, and I've found some conflicting information, and wondered if any of you kind folks could shed a little light on the matter. I'm trying to get the Lister SR3 going on my 70s Narrowboat, with the assistance of my dad (who is much more au-fait with engine things than me, though his experience is with motorbike and car engines). He's established that the starter motor is knackered, but we're having trouble identifying it. We've taken it to a Lucas-recommended servicing and parts place (SAS motorfactors, Bradford) and they couldn't identify it or get parts to fix it, and we've taken it to Puffer Parts too, with no luck. Collecting it tomorrow. The number on the starter motor is rubbed off at the end so that's no help, but it looks a bit like the Lucas LRS555. So when I finally get round to it...my questions are; is there more than one kind of lister sr3? I have seen some information that suggests LRS555 is suitable for Lister SR3, and some that suggest not. Does anyone have any advice on figuring out what my compatible starter motor options are here, and whether it's anticlock or clockwise? (Ps. Does anyone know where I can find a service manual as all I have is an operation manual? ) Many thanks for bearing with my rambly ill-informed queries. ==

Due to a minor mishap with the weedhatch last weekend (I was not on board ... ) we got quite a lot of water in the engine compartment. Fortunately it is separated from the rest of the boat by a high bulkhead. Most of the water was bailed out last weekend, and I did the rest (another three dustbins full) yesterday. The engine room floor is once again completely dry. As far as I can deduce, most of the starter motor and the solenoid was submerged. However it started OK last weekend and still works fine - I didn't use the heaters this morning and gave it a good long crank, the engine then started. The engine has been run for 4-5 hours since the incident and so has got nice and warm. So my question is: does anyone thinks some preventative maintenance to the starter motor would be sensible, or should I just see what happens? The engine is 20 years old, a Mitsubishi K4, and has worked flawlessly for all that time. Many thanks PS I replaced the ATF in the gearbox, as a) it was very milky and b ) there was too much of it (ie I suspect some water may have got in through the air vent). And I replaced the fanbelt (which had been spraying water around the engine compartment) as I always do so at this time of year.

Here's the facts. Friends boat. 1. The boat started in April last. 2. It has a good starter battery which is fully charged. 3. The boat is on shorepower. 4. A battery charge is connected to all batteries and is currently on. 5. Turning the ignition.....you here a "cluck" near the starter motor but nothing turns, or tries to turn...so the engine doesnt turn, and doesnt start. What is it? What's the cluck...a solenoid...which tells the starter motor to engage. Does it sound like a faulty starter motor? Thx.
