My latest madcap experiment (aka: possible way to drain my battery) is an old android phone with tether mode enabled to act as a wifi point for a cheap PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) webcam. The USB hub is in a 2.1A socket and uses 5.3V / 0.02A with nothing plugged into it. The phone (while charging) in the USB hub uses 4.9V / 0.7A The webcam in the USB hub uses 4.9V / 0.6A First, the phone has to be in tether mode to act as a wifi point. For this you give it a hotspot name and password: The little circular looking wifi icon at the top means it's functioning as a wifi router: I'd previously setup the camera before going to the boat, but the procedure is to get the old phone into tether mode, open the app, sign up for an account (free) and tell the app to link the tether wifi to the camera, give the app the tether password, and the camera should connect to the tether and be all good. Here she is in action: On my daily phone (using 4G data, so not connected to the tether), I open the app, sign in and I should hopefully see my camera: Lovely! So I'm basically hoping that I can get some sunshine on my solar panel before the camera and phone drain the battery. The camera has a ton of good settings and is recording 24/7 to an SD card inside it. I can set it to trigger remotely if it detects motion, and even send sound. Yes, it's not vandal/theft proof as is, but I'm just using it to have a looksy when I'm missing her.
