  1. Hi folks. Does anybody have experience of ee's 4G coverage between Hawkesbury Junction (top of the Oxford) and Rugby? I have a big conference call by Skype tomorrow afternoon. I currently have good 4G signal at Hawkesbury, but am keen to move on a few hours each day when I can. If I push on towards Rugby, am I likely to hit any signal dead spots? What's the signal like in Rugby itself (though I probably won't get that far)? Thanks.
  2. Hello All after moving a bit further north to explore a new area i^m looking for a mooring from Stafford Northwards, so when i get o boat for my days free can go out and get to a few pubs and back. More the choice the better. Would be nice if mooring is in easy access of M6 A50. Thank you
  3. We like to connect to BT Wifi hot spots when possible and have a roof mounted aerial with a usb connection the plugs into the laptop. But we are moving over to tablets (Samsung galaxy tab and note)is there a way of connecting (physically or wireless) the tablets to the aerial? Maybe something that rebroadcasts the signal within the boat. Thanks TC
  4. We are looking for advice/solutions on 2 areas – Internet and HDTV. We are buying a 70ft narrowboat which will be a liveaboard moored at Roydon Marina on the Essex/Hertfordshire border. We would like the following – a.) A good reliable internet connection (preferably WiFi on board) with enough capacity to download e-mails, a few HD movies and surf the Web. (Our current average usage on land is around 15-20 Gb per month). b.) A good reliable HD TV service/selection. We currently have on land a Virgin HD+ (inc TiVo) system plus a good package for films, etc. However this relies on the fibre optic virgin network which unfortunately is not an option at the Marina. We have read lots of past blogs (some quite old) about this subject, but much of the advice either contradicts other postings or is now out of date, because of the introduction of new packages, roll out of 4G, etc. Where we will be moored for at least 45+ weeks a year has good mobile reception (inc 4G) and very good sightlines to the Southeast (Satellite locations) We have also read about some very expensive installations (£2000+) involving marine autotrack satellite systems and some very inexpensive options (Freeview, Dish in a briefcase, etc.) but again most of these posts are from 2,3 or more years ago. Although we will be moored on a very quiet Marina, we still have considerations regarding “roll” as we walk about the boat and how serious a problem that might be. Good quality fast internet and a good selection of TV channels is important to us so we have a reasonable budget. If we could take our Virgin system with us on board we would, but unfortunately we can’t. Does anyone have any up to date solutions or suggestions?
  5. My latest madcap experiment (aka: possible way to drain my battery) is an old android phone with tether mode enabled to act as a wifi point for a cheap PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) webcam. The USB hub is in a 2.1A socket and uses 5.3V / 0.02A with nothing plugged into it. The phone (while charging) in the USB hub uses 4.9V / 0.7A The webcam in the USB hub uses 4.9V / 0.6A First, the phone has to be in tether mode to act as a wifi point. For this you give it a hotspot name and password: The little circular looking wifi icon at the top means it's functioning as a wifi router: I'd previously setup the camera before going to the boat, but the procedure is to get the old phone into tether mode, open the app, sign up for an account (free) and tell the app to link the tether wifi to the camera, give the app the tether password, and the camera should connect to the tether and be all good. Here she is in action: On my daily phone (using 4G data, so not connected to the tether), I open the app, sign in and I should hopefully see my camera: Lovely! So I'm basically hoping that I can get some sunshine on my solar panel before the camera and phone drain the battery. The camera has a ton of good settings and is recording 24/7 to an SD card inside it. I can set it to trigger remotely if it detects motion, and even send sound. Yes, it's not vandal/theft proof as is, but I'm just using it to have a looksy when I'm missing her.
  6. Internet Dongle for Narrowboat usersGetting slightly bored of only being able to use the internet in one room, I’ve invested in this THREE dongle. It basically allows me to connect anywhere, at least anywhere where there is THREE network. Currently, it allows me to connect at 3G speeds, which are fairly good, THREE have the best 3G network in the UK. I did some research on the subject, and it seems that they invested heavily in it. Whilst EE rushed out the 4G. EE 4g ClaimsAlthough EE claim to offer 4G here, I purchased a SIM to try out these claims. Turns out their service was patchy at best, nothing like what their website claimed, (full coverage at 4G speeds), as pictured. This is what it says for DE13 8DZ…. Even if David Bacon uses EE, after the credit ran out, I threw it in the canal! Useless… Mobile phone tethering vs DongleMobile phones are fine for the odd bit of surfing, but if the weather changes, or for no particular reason at all, they can disconnect, which is inconvenient and not what I’m looking for from my internet connection. Tethered mobile phone As you can see, I have to harness my phone to the narrowboat window in order for it to function properly. Mobile technology is particular susceptible to sunspots and solar activity. Three dongle I want something stable, with good speeds and 99% uptime. ChargesThese are the mobile phone tethering charges. You have to top your phone up by the respective amounts before these options become available. Pay per month 1GB. (lasts up to 30 days) 1GB £10 Pay per month 3GB. (lasts up to 30 days) 3GB £15 Pay per month 7GB. (last up to 30 days) 7GB £25 Pay per month 500MB. (lasts up to 48 hours) 500MB £2.99 The cost of the dongle is 12GB for £59.90 which can be topped up by credit card. The dongle itself lasts 12 months from activation. Speeds Dongle connection speeds This is the speeds I’m currently getting on my THREE ZTE MF730M Dongle, roughly what you can expect from a BT package on copper cables. Tethered phone connection speeds This is the speed on a THREE network, 3G enabled tethered mobile phone. You can see the difference – 1MB per second. UptimeThis is more difficult to measure, but from experience, I’d say tethering has pretty low uptime, maybe 70%. Dongle should have 100% uptime, as long as the network is available. It’s not an either/or scenario. I can still use my phone for internet connection, the same as I can still use the marina free wifi. For anyone thinking of doing this, I’d recommend getting the pay-as-you go sim, like this one and avoid getting involved in any sort of obligation to continue or commit yourself. They can be found on amazon. (Taken from http://www.michaeltyler.co.uk)
  7. Just came across this curious offering from a broadband company called Relish. Their home broadband service apparently just requires a power socket since it runs on a 4G network. Data is uncapped. I wonder whether they would provide the service to boats. https://www1.relish.net/athome Curiously, they also offer 'On the move' (mobile) broadband that uses a portable MiFi device, but this is capped to 20G max (and more expensive than ee) so isn't particularly attractive. As for the home broadband though, presumably if you're in one place most of the time and can power the indoor hub provided, it makes no different to the company whether you're on land or not?
  8. Apparently I'll have "weak outdoor" 4G coverage from EE, but only 2G indoors. No coverage from Three. Is there a way of boosting the signal in the boat with some sort of device on the roof? Ideally, I'd want to connect a laptop and an iPad.
  9. How can you "suck" wifi into your boat. The 2 systems I have been able to find are a Kuma wifi repeater(170-00) and Solwise Patriot/3000 Router & Bracket Kit (110-00) Does any one know anything about these products and if so how do they perform
