Hello, We are a group of University students in Bath and we are conducting some research regarding the waterways and associated green public space in Bath. To do this we were hoping to get in touch with people who live along the Avon in Bath! We are particularly interested in the proportion of permanent boater residents, the type of communities, and other rules and regulations around the area. In addition, we have a questionnaire if you do live in the area! (I have attached it to the link below) Please send your responses to greenequityvip@groups.bath.ac.uk Thank you ever so much and hope you get in touch! Hi all, I have spent the weekend fitting lights in the living areas of my boat, ready to be wired up once they're all in position. However I have so far been unable to find a 12v switch that looks like a normal light switch. So my question to the good people of the forum: Can I use a standard mains (240v) light switch wired up to the lights? In my googling I have seen people say that you should down-rate the switch by 50% to be on the safe side, so a switch rated at 10 amps with 240v AC should be considered ok for 5 amps with 12v DC. I have also seen people mention the contacts becoming corroded in the switch is used with DC and others say this should be fine. Also will this cause an issue for BSS? I will trawl through the documentation but if someone says "no, you cannot do this" it'll save me a lot of time! If I shouldn't use a standard light switch, does anyone know where I can get 12v switches that look like normal ones you'd find in a house? Thanks in advance!

Not directly boat related but I'm hoping someone will have ideas. We've just moved house and built-in wardrobes are very dark. Now on the boat we have used LED lights very successfully for spot (rather than area) lighting. So I tried some Homebase lights only to find the light output isn't really enough for lighting up a biggish area. Searching around there are lots of LED units available and glowing (!) reviews e.g. Lloytron, BUT they don't tell you how many lumens you are going to get! Anyone got experience with this sort of problem?

Having admired the Moomin Papas' cabin lighting, I want to fit various lengths of LED strip under our gunwales 3 questions: Can I wire this straight into an extension off the 12v lighting circuit, or do I need the transformer of other kit that seems to be sold with it for landlubbers? What are typical switching arrangements (use simple language please - I am electrically challenged..) Are there any suppliers recommended or to avoid? Anything else I need to know before I go back to browsing ebay? Thanks!!

Hi All, The Questions: Do all 'seperate bottom draw stoves' start as strongly as a morso and are the cheaper ones harder to keep in? Has anyone else found the old model 'single door' Acorn Aarrow stoves a little slow to start/ have any tips? I've previously had some breathing difficulties with my stove lit through winter and had some really good suggestions on a previous post including burning the stove fast and hot which I must say, when I can manage it, helps immensely. Now my friend has what a lot of people regard as the best of the boat stoves, a morso-squirrel. I've noticed how fast and incredibly powerful the stove can get going with the bottom drawer open when lighting. My mate asked me to get his stove going for him whilst away one day and I had managed to get his going in about 25 minutes, a little longer for coal to take and then able to shut it down and kept it in for the day until he got back. I have the old Acorn Aarrow model and this always takes about an hour or two to really get super hot and i'm sure the slow burning start that the aarow seems to limp off to a start with doesn't help in contributing to my asthma. I know having really dry wood helps alot but as a live-aboard through a very wet winter sometimes this is quite a challenge, so really thinking about replacing my old arrow with one of these bottom draw stoves, any help really appreciated :-) Pete

Hi everyone, My apologies if this has been asked previously but I cant seem to find a thread. But I'm new to narrowboats and I want to switch from fluorescent tubes to LED lights as painlessly as possible. My boat has 5 x 284mm G5 tubes and I was wondering If I could simply chop the the old light fittings and reconnect some LED spotlights. just a red and black cable right?.... it really cant be that simple can it? Thanks R
