This is our boat 'Liberty' on the Marne River in France, 2017. She's a Dutch-built Aquanaut, 11 metres x 3.75m with a Yanmar 110hp diesel. We lived on board her for a whole year (wrote a book about it: www.againstthecurrent.uk) and have enjoyed a few summer seasons cruising on the French waterways since.

I have just posted some pictures in the gallery of an engine, or compressor maybe, that I saw sitting outside a yard in a village in the Haute Vienne, does anyone know what it is?

Hello, A small message to report you a narrowboat abandoned in France: it is the Bearly Afloat. A "trad" that seems abandoned to Saint Satur in the Cher. The town hall has filed a notice of abandonment on November 15, 2017. The boat will be sold or destroyed on May 15, 2018 if the owner does nothing. Registration is not visible. Only the name of the boat "Bearly Afloat" and the names of the owners, or former owners, Danny & Sue Blackmore " are still visible. If you know them, send the message. Photo and notice of abandonment on my blog. There is an option at the bottom right of the page to translate the text. Best regards from France Laurent

Hi I have a houseboat in Burgundy in France that i purchased last year i am wondering about renting it out a few times during the high season, nothing major commercial, just a few times to cover the mooring. Does anyone have any experience of this in France? any insights would be most welcome Regards karl

Hi folks, We're newbies looking at buying a boat (canal boat with an engine rather than sailing boat) in England and taking it to France. (They seem to be better kept here from what we saw last week in France & previously in England!) Does anyone know of reputable providers of transport for taking a boat from England to France please? Is it cheaper to get a transport company to do this rather than ask someone to "sail" it to France? Many thanks in advance.

Canals and rivers in France have been seriously affected by high rainfall resulting in swollen waterways, strong currents and flooding in recent weeks. Conditions are exceptionally unusual for this time of year. Avignon, on the Rhone, saw further problems this weekend when two barges (lighters, I think) broke free from their moorings, hitting one of the seven river cruise ships moored up whilst navigation is closed and hitting the TGV railway bridge. More info - http://www.french-waterways.com/58486/ On the River Yonne (roughly, south-east of Paris) a British pèniche appears to have got holed and has sank. The 70/71 year old owners are ok.

Hi there, We're planning to sell our house and take a couple of years out before we get locked down to school with kids. We're hoping to buy a boat, preferably a Dutch-style barge capable of being piloted across the Channel. We would stay on the Kennet and Avon near Bath / Bristol for the winter before heading to the European canal network in the spring. I'm struggling to get to grips with what is actually a realistic beam size for this - within reason, we want the biggest boat we can manage on the K&A but there seems to be a lot of conflicting info about what you can actually take from Bath - London. I understand the theoretical 13ft 10in is perhaps not possible because some lock gates don't open fully and the edges of the canal channel are very silted in places. But I can't find any solid info anywhere about what is actually a realistic beam! We're looking at something like 65ft - 68ft in length to give us a few feet leeway. I know the European canals are much larger and I imagine that if your boat is too small it would quite intimidating over there, besides the fact that we want space for the kids (we'll have an infant and a 3 yr old). Any advice would be welcome - also if anyone has any tips on boats for sale - obviously we're looking on Apollo Duck etc Many thanks for your help Kind Regards Emma
