My teenager is thinking about various career options. Architecture is at the top of the list (and has stayed there for several years, so fairly serious), and she has an interest in the possibilities and constraints as relating to design of live-aboard boats. She's quite organized, and has just done an informational interview with a land-based architect about his career; she has now indicated she would like to meet and discuss with a narrow-boat designer if we can find one. Can anyone recommend a good person to talk to about this? Ideally, we'd want someone innovative (i.e. not just producing minor variations on the same plan), and associated with a yard so she could potentially see a boat in progress to get a feel for how the designs are translated into reality. We're in Oxford so something around here would simplify things for the chauffeur (me), but since she's taking such an interest I'm willing to travel further afield if needed. Thanks! Mark

Hi All, I'd like to rip apart my existing well deck and re-build it much better and I'm struggling to find ideas on t'internet, especially with photos or diagrams. I like to sit out on my well deck when the weather's good, I have no real need for storage and I'd like seating for guests. I'm pretty good at DIY and would welcome some suggestions (with photos or diagrams if possible). The photos here show my current well deck. It is 4 feet from front to back. As you can see, I have a small diesel tank on the starboard side which can't be moved. On the port side there is a storage locker with 'seating' on top, but I'd like to rip this out. Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated. Many thanks Adam

Hi, we are just buying our first narrowboat. We need to make a bigger bed, thankfully the carpenter has some ideas about the base design, but we don't really know the best way to go with the mattress. It will have to be pulled out at night and pushed, folded or stacked during the day. Have you any advise about form or type of mattress? And any ideas where to buy the adaptable mattress. Thank you in advance.

looking for some easy to use software to try out layout ideas and do a proper design of the motorcycle ramp and storage idea I have in mind. I am very old school in that I was very good in technical drawing where you actually had to use paper and drew plan and elevations first before you went to an isometric 3d view. If possible I would like to be able to work in this way. I have tried sketchup but to be honest its a pain in the hole, and seems overly complicated for what I want to achieve. Also I find it hard not being able to work in a true plan view or true side elevation view but that probably goes back to my past experience of technical drawing before CAD CAM was even available. Also important to me would be pre designed hulls, as I would have no idea as to the correct dimensions for each part to draw a hull from scratch. Not so important but it would be nice, if things link sink units, cookers, fridges, toilets were cut and paste, but this is not essential. finally it has to be free or fairly cheap. I am not going to spend £100+ on a bit of software that I will rarely use after this project. An alternative would be free downloads of existing plans that include all dimensions and angles so that I could use the pencil and paper method and reproduce an accurate hull in my own drawings although i seriously doubt any commercial enterprise is going to freely offer their designs. Any suggestions or recommendations would be welcome.

Evening all, Apparently technology has moved at a faster pace than I have over the past years... I'd like to commission a 57' narrow boat design in CAD with 3D walk-through type viewing. We have our retirement project in mind but we're new to the scene so our ideas for the interior may prove to be awful in reality and I guess it's cheaper to find out now than after cutting metal. We'd like a SeaOtter type aluminium ballasted hull but I see the company has capsized - does anyone know the whereabouts of their designer? The exterior is inspired by the "Dover" series on TV (Dover is a large Woolwich working boat I believe...) I'm not sure how technical the design has to be initially from the naval architects perspective, I don't know in the future if an architect could import a detailed interior design file into his own more technical hull design, I don't want to pay for the same design twice! Obvious a person with design experience from within the industry would be able to advise of the magnitude of inevitable errors etc, this knowledge only coming after spending hours chugging along the cut. I'm happy to make payments in instalments, via Paypal if it's easier. Please advise your interest by PM or email dpaws at icloud dot com - serious offers only please. Further design details available on request. Meanwhile any info on the ex SeaOtter design and build crew would be very much appreciated. Thanks for reading Steve and Luana
