Hi everyone I’m trying to locate a barge owned by my Irish grandfather who brought up lots of children (one of them my dad of course!) whilst carting goods along the local canal network. He left Oxford Uni to marry a Lancashire Lass called Winifred and I am trying to find the roots! He never returned to his native shores but his barge was named after him, William, I believe (Cos his name was William) He called himself a ‘carter’ (once found on a marriage certificate, now lost) and moved goods between Stoke-on -Trent and Liverpool, as well as some trips along the Leeds/Liverpool canal. And the only evidence I have is the name of the boat “William” and Boatmaker, Joseph Rayner, Runcorn! (From a picture hung on my wall). I only have one photo of my father. All this was purveyed to me at my fathers funeral, where I met all my uncles from Runcorn, Frodsham and Northwich! It’s the only link I have to my ancestry from Ireland! if anyone can suggest how I can ‘dig’ for info on the boat, (It has a feint number, a name and a maker) it would help a lot. If I can attach a photo, I will. I believe it is a barge if anyone can enlighten me!? I only need one good single lead to start delving. I feel I have a long interesting journey of discovery ahead of me and am enthralled by the whole subject of life on the canals, especially as it relates to my profession! Thanks for reading! Hi all. Today I have taken my narrowboat out for the first time in a year. I'm currently moored on the canal and am stranded. Today when on the water there was some loud clunks when shifting into gear. The boat then stuck in gear and I ended up crashing into a lock. Traumatic experience... I have just discovered I have no oil in the PRM 120D2 gearbox. Can anyone advise my next step to fixing this issue please? Is it as simple as adding more oil? Many thanks, Jason

On Ch 5 tonight at 2000hrs some one done up a barge that they hope to sell for a million quid, of course Foxes Afloat are on it as well Documentary following people who invest millions in the ultimate floating home or holiday bolthole, including a barge worth £2.5million in one of the UK's most expensive locations. Ex-City trader Rob isn't afraid of a challenge. After a tough job almost caused him to have a breakdown, he stepped away to figure out a new life. He gambled big and invested in an old barge - he spent £500,000 on renovations and hopes to sell it for a cool million

Hey all, I hope you don't mind me posting here - it seemed directly relevant to the thread! I’m a producer with Barcroft Productions, a London-based production company. We produce a wide variety of factual full length documentaries for networks including the BBC, Netflix and Discovery. We’re currently making a homes series for a very well-known online platform and we’d love to include a person/couple who live on a residential boat in the UK. The only thing that makes it tricky is that it needs to be: 1. Ideally a boat that is still being worked on but that will be finished in August (although one that has just been finished might also work), and 2. The boat itself probably needs to be quite impressive, luxurious or visually striking on the inside for it to work for the series. Is anyone in the midst of a major build or refit that might fit the bill? Or know anyone else who is? We’re on quite a tight turnaround time so I’m open to suggestions, any help at all would be massively appreciated! Just to stress, it doesn’t necessarily need to be a lavishly expensive boat. We recently made a show for Netflix called Amazing Interiors that featured a young couple who lived on the Thames who had saved up to do a DIY refurb on their boat but used a lot of salvaged materials to cut costs, the main thing is that the end product looks really nice. Link here if you want to check it out, it’s the main story in episode one: https://www.netflix.com/title/80184067 If you're interested, you can contact me at thomas@barcroftmedia.com Thanks! Tom
