Could i get your recommendations for a good surveyor near, or who is happy to travel to Stone, Staffs please. One who will not mind me following him/her around during the (full) survey and asking questions. I'm pretty good at not getting in the way but at the same time i will want to be able to ask stuff.... Big thanks in advance..

I acquired and have recently read an original 'Cruising on Canals' guide that was issued to hirers of boats from the Canal Cruising Company, Stone, Staffs A quick web search found that the company is still in existence. The guide came with a letter addressed to a Miss Cooper, dated 18th March 1957 apologising that the latest edition was unavoidably delayed so they put together a copy of the original edition (and charged her account 4/6 for the copy) It is remarkably comprehensive, covering routes, how to operate locks, handy hints and tips, boat inventories, spares and tools etc etc. There are some fantastic instructions in them: Hot Weather - Cabin walls and roof tend to open up in hot weather. Sluice them regularly with the mop, otherwise they will leak when the rain comes. Lavatory - Empty this before it is to full. Dig a hole with the trench tool. Save all empty chemical tins. Fenders - We replace fenders torn off in locks every week. (5/- each). Dangling fenders betray the novice to all who see them. Canal Boatmen - Most of these will be friendly and helpful. Please do not ask to see their cabins. They do not like it. Don't use the words 'barge' or 'bargee'. The correct greeting is "How d'you do". Boats mentioned are: Hounsfield - describes camp beds? Venturer and James Brindley are described as big boats and unable to navigate Harecastle tunnel Angela Mancunian Thomas Telford Magician - has a forward driving position Ailsa Craig - vee hulled and Kingfisher, which was their new boat (1953) and made of resin bonded ply while all of the other boats are 2" oak Does anyone remember the boats?
