  1. I had a wet room in my first boat. It had a slatted wooden floor on top which dried quickly even though the plastic floor stayed wet for a long time. I thought it was good, but wonder why they are so rarely found on boats?
  2. I have a "wet room" in my room at uni. Its one of these big GRP moulded rooms like you somtimes get in youth hostals, very simular to type you get in large caravans and motor homes. Internaly it mesures just under 3ft/4ft6". Its made in four bits, two wall sections, the tray/floor, and a the ceiling. - The shower section, which is about 1/3 of the floorspace is about 2" lower than the rest, and the sink is a 5th GRP moulding, with the ceramic loo wall-mounted. In terms of use it could be worse. The sinks a little small to have a decent wash in, espcailly with the large (mixer)tap in the way. The showers also a little clostrofolbic for my liking (it is only 3*18inch) and also the shower head is at shoulder hight! Also, the floor will stay wet for hours (like 10) unless you wipe it dry after you use it. - However, if thats all the space you have, it is acctaully ok, as long as you have a floorcloth, and wipe the floor dry after everyshower. I wouldnt want to have it as a corridoor tho. Also ask clevett about his wet room if he's about? Daniel
  3. Wet rooms always see like a glamorous idea, but theres a clue in the name- wet! We went to stay with a friend who has a wet room in her house. After a morning shower it stays wet until the evening and you traipse water through the house every tmie you use the toilet or sink. Otherwise spend hours drying it,then how are you going to dry the towels you just used to do so? I would imagine it would be even more of a pain on a boat.
  4. Hello all... Am in the process of fitting out a narrowboat, and am at the stage where i need to install the shower waste water plumbing.. Preferably i'd like to fit a wet room style shower floor as i'd hope this might best utilise the very small space i'm trying to fit the shower into. Has anyone fitted a wet room floor into a narrowboat, was it successful? And what products/techniques would you regard as being the best???? I'm also looking to cram an Envirolet composting toilet into the the bathroom and wondered if anyone has any feedback on these - are they good? efficient? noisy? too big? And do you think its possible to fit one of these toilets in, with the back of the toilet against the hull side???? (as opposed to being lengthways along the boat?) A great site by the way, shame i didn't find it earlier, its nice to find there are other people out there doing the same thing.
  5. I have just discovered that the plastic shower tray in our wet room/toilet compartment has developed a crack at one end on a curved surface of the tray (in the base). To stop the crack from spreading I did intend to drill a small hole at each end of the crack as stoppers but the question then becomes could I seal the crack successfuly to prevent leaking? The other thought is that I ought to replace the tray but with what? Entrance is via a hinged wooden door and you step over a small wooden sill on to the tray. The room is small but wide enough to use the toilet and to shower (but not of course at the same time) the chemical toilet sits on the shower tray and just clear of the outside of the boat. I suspect that the tray has cracked because whilst the rest of the base seems to rest on something firm the edges dont appear to be supported. The walls of the compartment have been linned with flexible floor covering and the last six inches or so tiled down to the tray. The tray has a conventional drain hole which is piped to a discharge pump with a strainer. Having given it a good coat-of-looking-at I think I should be able to get the tray out but when I get it out what should be under the tray to support it. I rather suspect that this tray is of the caravan type and could not be described as ridged and needs some form of support all round. Somewhere at the back of my mind I seem to have heard that when installing shower trays that are flexible underfoot that they should be bedded down on a base of sand, does this maker sense . Comments welcome. DavidK
  6. Having tiled with conventional adhesives and grouts in our bathroom at home, and subsequently having to remove those tiles when the timber behind had got damp, swollen and cracked all the grouting, to find those timbers very damp and starting to grow mould, I would have to agree. I don't think it quite constuitutes a ‘wet room’, but boat bathroom is now tastefully decorated in black bitumen. While trying to choose tiles yesterday and explaining requirements to suppliers, consensus seemed to be to seal the sheeting as I have done, stick 'em on and possibly even ‘grout’ with silicone, in fact some even seem to favour this method when fixing to timber sheeting in domestic bathrooms.
  7. Ann, We have an electro-hydraulic wheelchair lift platform on our bow, a wet room shower/toilet area and deckhead slides to assist with transferring wheechair users from chair to bed etc. If we can be of help with photos of equipment, etc, please let us know. (The photographs of us below are when moored at Paddington Basin in London and below that with the ramp in place - unfortunately the lift is in the down position).
  8. One of our members has fitted a wet room, i think it is Chris P
  9. Hi Everybody, I would like to say thanks to all the people who replied with information. It was great, especially the pictures of fitting the lift. At the present time, I am looking into fitting level access showers into narrowboats. Just in case you don't know, this is basically a "wet room". The whole of the bathroom floor is fitted with specialised flooring and the flooring is folded up the bulk heads to forma a watertight floor area. (basically creating a super dooper shower tray. The bathroom floor is on a very slight gradient leading to the drain trap. By doing this, wheelchair users can access the shower room on a "glydeabout" (semi wheelchair made of plastic and on castors - very easy to move around, a bit like an ASDA trolley.) They gain their independence and require very little carer intervention. Grab rails can also be fitted to ensure safe transfers. Comments please folks, Regards, Ann
  10. Getting a shower try fabricated in aluminium or stainless is quite feasible, keep it simple and it shouldn't cost too much. I made mine as little more than the outer frame which was then fixed permanently in place, a shallow steel bitumen coated tray fits below from where the water is pumped out. A well painted plywood platform mounted on rubber pads sits on top, and within that I used those plastic interlocking tile things that are sold for making a non-slip deck. Wet rooms were very popular a few years ago but it is said that they tend to give the boat a damp feel, but then Chris P seems to get on with his.
  11. ............... or a wet room. just make the shower the size you want, slope the floor to the drain and fix a nice waterproof liner (I'm using a cushionfloor type lino that's about 4mm thick and very flexy). I will make some nice radiused inner corners, and take the liner up to waist height throughout the bathroom.
  12. The off-cuts were a favour from a friend who runs a flooring business doing commercial premises - offices, factories etc. The stuff for the wet-room we got through a local 'interiors' shop, the sort that does curtains, laminate flooring, blinds etc. We paid for professional fitting, but only because we were too busy with other things to do a good job. I can't find the invoice, so can't confirm the name of the stuff or the price - blame OH's extreme filing system!
  13. We built a wet-room in the house and used the commercial non-slip flooring that you see in hospitals, commercial kitchens etc. It is expensive, but definitely non-slip. We managed to get hold of some off-cuts at a bargain price which we used on the deck of the aft-cockpit - slightly more difficult to keep clean than the old vinyl, but worth it for the added safety.
  14. Hi Chris After seeing a successful wet room on a narrowboat a few months ago I would also consider this if we had a new boat built. The owners had a stainless steel tray fabricated to the shape of the room. This had raised edges all the way round to form a large sort of tray. The raised edges (about 30mm high) where covered by the wall tiles with the exception of the door entrance which was covered by a hardwood strip, you had to step over this when entering into the room. The tray was also fabricated with steel strips welded to the back to form the slope to the drain hole and section of pipe at one end. A hole was drilled into the floor and presumably the pipe went into a sealed container with float switch that pumped out the waste. This was accessed from the floor of a wardrobe next to the bathroom. The room looked great and provided loads of space. Although the chap did still use a special swimming pool tile adveshive which he said had cost more that the mosiac tiles! Hope this gives you confidence to go for it! I would!! Good luck Justin.
