  1. Hello All, I'm going to make the trip from Manchester to Chester soon - just wondered what the quickest route is? I was going to head from Manchester down the Bridgewater to Middlewich, across to just North of Northwich and then up to Chester - about 25 hours or so all in. Is it possible to get from Manchester down the Manchester Ship canal to Ellesmere Port and down to Chester from there does anyone know? Thanks in advance for your responses!
  2. Clockwise - up through Northwich and into Manchester that way...
  3. Castlefield it is then! Thanks... And do you have to enter Manchester under cover of darkness/early morning to avoid being molested by young uns', as seems to be accepted wisdom?
  4. Heading towards Manchester tomorrow - where is best to stay in the centre? How long before BW move you on? Is there anywhere you can get a temporary mooring? (Even if I haven't got a mooring licence) Are there many who live aboard in the centre permanently? Where? Cheers!
  5. Nut cases are everywhere, especially on the canals and in city centres... Generally speaking these people are very friendly, and can actually teach you something if you spend long enough chatting to them... I can understand why people are afraid of every stranger they come across, people generally seem to be terrified to leave their homes, but I've lived on the canals for four years and haven't had the slightest bother even though I've lived in some pretty 'rough' areas... It is a shame that the majority of the population is terrified of each other, I guess it's just lack of exposure to 'the real world'... On the other hand, I find a useful way to deter folk is to act more nuts than they are...
  6. Afternoon all, sorry to be cheeky but i could use some advice/help from anyone about selling my boat.. I've had a new 57' trad for a year which i've been working on, i originally allowed (budgeted) one year for completion, a target which i subsequently missed by some way... Not really wanting to pay 6% on brokerage fees i just wondered if anyone could advise on where might be the best place (s) to advertise it while keeping the costs down... Also some idea as to how much i might reasonably expect to get for the boat would be useful, or any other tips/advice/criticism that might help me would be gratefully received (Either about the boat or about how i'm trying to sell it).. Don't be shy with the comments, there's no point deluding oneself... From experience, do you think i might just be best biting the bullet and paying for a brokerage to sell it?? Boat details can be seen in the 'For sale and wanted' section under the topic title UNFINISHED PROJECT - SERIOUS OFFERS CONSIDERED, started by me... Thanks muchly, any comments appreciated...
  7. Good morning all! I've had a read through some of the related threads but as my understanding of 12 volt electrics is pretty limited, haven't made enough sense of the threads to answer my question.. I've wired up my boat and am just getting around to finishing off the 12v electrical system (which basically consists of 2 x 80 amp alternators, 1 x 110 ah engine battery, 3 x 110 ah domestic bank) and have the following question: As i see it with regards to optimising my alternator charging efficiency and battery capacity i can either spend a few hundred quid on an all singing all dancing victron (or other) alternator to battery charger, or i can can spend a little less and fit an alternator controller (adverc or the like) and a split charge relay. Is this a correct assumption? Would the alternator controller and split charge relay help protect the alternators and batteries like I assume the charger would?? What other advantages does the charger have over an alternator controller system?? Sorry if I have got the wrong end of the stick with regards this matter, any comments or advice would be much appreciated!!!!
  8. Marvellous! Am very proud of my new found eccentric status. 20k for boat purchase and fit out is some going, i was thinking i'd be pretty near the bottom end doing the whole lot for 35k. (That was my original budget as well!!)
  9. Whats classed as the lower end of the market in terms of a budget for fitting out/buying a boat???? So is everyone here an "eccentric" also?? Or does that just come as part of the territory if you own a narrowboat???
  10. Okay thanks very much (everyone), i think that kinda helps me out, i guess its time to get on the phone and do some ringing around for prices!!!
  11. Fair enough... To ask another daft question or two... Specifically why is it that high end boatbuilders don't use it, and why are you not fond of it Mr Peacock??? Do people not touch it because its somewhat dangerous, or are there other performance advantages gained from using plywood? Or is it not used because its MDF, has a negative reputation, and hasn't been the material of choice in the past few years? Could you ever see yourself using it in the future Mr Peacock??
  12. I've done a bit of looking around on the site and can't find any related topics... I'd always assumed that i'd use veneered plywood for the cabin linings, until I happened a professional builders yard, and when having a nose around their latest boat and asking many questions of one of the builders (who was very friendly and helpful) he told me he was using veneered MDF for both the linings and partitions. I was a little surprised at this as i wouldn't have thought it suitable in damp conditions, but he claimed that as well as being cheaper, it was more stable and easier to work with than ply. Any thoughts, is MDF a big no no, what are the advantages of using ply?? Thanks in advance for any answers!! I hope its not cheeky me asking questions like this?!?
  13. Thanks everyone for the feedback... Have decided to go with a standard shower tray, if time and money wasn't an issue i'd certainly opt for a wet room floor, done right i'd imagine the style factor would be right up there, but the trays do seem far easier and quicker to install. Maybe next time (if there is one). Otherwise the compost toilet has been ordered, a tad expensive, but should be worth it.
  14. Hello all... Am in the process of fitting out a narrowboat, and am at the stage where i need to install the shower waste water plumbing.. Preferably i'd like to fit a wet room style shower floor as i'd hope this might best utilise the very small space i'm trying to fit the shower into. Has anyone fitted a wet room floor into a narrowboat, was it successful? And what products/techniques would you regard as being the best???? I'm also looking to cram an Envirolet composting toilet into the the bathroom and wondered if anyone has any feedback on these - are they good? efficient? noisy? too big? And do you think its possible to fit one of these toilets in, with the back of the toilet against the hull side???? (as opposed to being lengthways along the boat?) A great site by the way, shame i didn't find it earlier, its nice to find there are other people out there doing the same thing.
