Fascinating! thanks a lot for that bit of history.

Thanks Pig, yes, Mellors will soon have some plugs in stock.
-
Where to get glow plugs and screens for these, please? I thought they were now obsolete.

I have never pulled my priming levers past the point where they start pumping as they felt rock hard and I thought I might have be going to break something. Are they normally hard to pull? Engine is a great starter always.

We got a text back from Cart this morning and the lady said the bottom pair of gates are going to be replaced in November's stoppage. I hope the paddle can be made to work meantime
-
Thanks Mike, we did try closing the gates after escaping and they didn't look much different closed either way.
We helped the next boat through with our carpet and then the third boat owner turned up with a barge pole about 2 1/2" dia which he said he stuck down from the top on these occasions. Also worth knowing about.

Good Morning, we have just had great difficulty getting through this lock due one to top paddle out of action and big leakage between the bottom gates. I've tried ringing Cart but still too early, we'll try again later.
We ended up using a piece of old carpet and a pole to bock the gap.

Last week we got to the top at Crofton just as the guy had locked the gates for the night, so we had to spend the night there. We had an interesting walk after the rain stopped. I started wondering why the banks are so high when there is actually plenty of water in the summit pound?
Also, there is enormous headroom through the Bruce tunnel. Was this to enable the top pound to be kept very deep in order to create a reservoir?

It might do, but we are not on mains at present, thanks

Thanks all for the excellent advice, I'll be back on board on Friday and not use it until checked. Also thanks for the safety tip..

On our boat we have a Victron phoenix multi plus inverter 12 2500 120 and seem to have a random fault which cuts it out maybe once a day - all three red LEDs come on at once - Overload, Low Batt and temperature. It is in the engine room (not ideal, I know) but has not been over 40 °C since last summer. I plan to rig a fresh air duct to feed air in below it before this summer. I don't see this fault in the manual I have downloaded (can't find the actual manual on their website): https://www.victronenergy.com/Manuals/PhoenixMulti/UKISM010004000-rev08.pdf
Anyone have experience of this, please?

it looked to be very strong wth no insulators. a lot of effort for a hammock, though.

We came south through Braunston on the Oxford today never passed as many moving boats in my life! Just north of Braunston we passed a boat which has stayed in my thoughts all day, I wish I had stopped and taken a picture. It was grey I think, 50' long ish and was very tidy but had a very strong, well made sort of washing line high above the roof between two strong stayed masts.
Anyone know what that is about, please?

It is a dark place, but we have had no trouble there leaving ours in summer, but its probably quiet at this time of year. Glad they didn't get in.

15 minute walk to Preston BUS station. Train from Preston to Burnley.
We live near Preston and have found out that ALL the Eastbound busses running over the road bridge at the North end of Preston railway station stop there and will take you to the bus station. You won't have to wait long for one to come along.

Fault tracing is all about testing stuff and proving it works,
Right I'll have a look at the brushes but the other day when I shorted the green wire to ground there was loads of power going through

Have you checked the brushes on the Alternator?
It was new less than 12 months ago. I have just bought the top one off eBay thanks for all your help I'll report back when I have tried it.

It looks like the Adverc is not working
It is beginning to look like that. I have another of the same model on another sea boat, so I will see what that does at weekend when we launch it, and then try swapping them over. At least they are made in Wolverhampton, and are repairable.

I have checked again where the red adverc wire goes and it is to the domestic isolator switch right next to the battery.
I'm afraid turning the pot seems to make no difference i.e. 6 turns clockwise then back. 12 x anti clock then back. And the voltage remains at about 14.3.

s this to confirm that it is correctly wired to the correct place inside the alternator
Yes, and I won't make a habit of it.
Will try the pot adjustment tomorrow, thanks.

The Adverc light should not flash, so something is wrong
It wasn't flashing with the bulb in series.
Replacing Markon SL105 AVR with SX460
in Boat Equipment

Well done Tasemu, its great when a long term project comes to fruition. I came across this post elsewhere on the web whilst I was researching Markon alternators. I am currently restoring an old 2kW one which has all its original gubbins still working. I'll report back if I ever get it running reasonably well.
