  2. We are currently restoring to life a 35 year old narrowboat that was abandoned in hard standing in a yard for 10 years.

Once we replaced all the electrics for the engine, starter, alternator, batteries, etc , we managed to get the engine going.

Bringing it into the dock to start stripping the hull down, it was a pleasure to steer, very responsive and simple, including reversing.

Once out of the water, we found the Schilling rudder, and the bulbous front end.

I will take a better picture of rudder in the morning.

  3. There has been a particularly bad batch of Excel produced recently,  which has caused many problems.

Jules Fuels and Ryan have refused to order any until a new batch is produced.

If you have old stock, treasure it, mine was bought last June and is excellent.

I weighed in four batteries at Daventry Non Ferrous Metals in 2022 and received just short of £50 by bank transfer.  Take photo ID as said above.

Unit 14 Everdon Park, Heartlands Business Park, Daventry, NN11 8YJ

That's the one we always use, batteries, old cauliflowers, scrap piping, scrap cables, scrap water pumps etc.

Nothing metal goes in the bins.

Don't forget the paint used in the first application of Willow Wren livery in the 1950s was decided by someone jumping the bus into Rugby.  A quick visit to Woolworth's supplied the shade of home brand green paint (Winfield?) that introduced Willow Wren to the canal world.  Hardly the most consistent of quality products.

Woolworths paint was very consistent and good quality.

If its a Collinwood, get it surveyed. Many have defects from new, like missing welds!

If it's a C get the bowthruster tube looked at, as they havnt blacked a single one I've seen launched in the last 10 years....and that's more than my fingers and toes...

Is any canal boat cabin really sealed up tight? I know the bss rules on ventilation are now advisory rather than mandatory, but all the canal boats I've ever seen still have fixed non-closeable ventilation and only an idiot would block all their vents while running a stove.

You would be amazed at how many boats we get in which have cardboard panels behind their vents, or even kingspan blocks.

There is one local boat who seals all his hatches, mushrooms and doors with gaffer tape, it's a pig to do work on his boat as when he comes home he re-instates all the stuff and we have to remove it again next day!!

would you see churches from here? I don’t think so, but it adds to the theme.
