  1. not sure i'd want to eat the mussells on the bottom of our boat. when it was first dragged out you could hear them hissing and spitting out water... it was rather strange (poor things). there must have been a few thousand.
  2. i was told to keep the slipway clean... and rightly so. it started to smell like grimby dock after just an hour or so! anyway job done. i wonder how long it'll be before they're back!
  3. i think sea food chowder is off the menu!! i was really surprised to see that many though, it was totally covered. i know she's not been out of the water since she was built in 2006. and before we bought her she was moored on the middle levels and great ouse, so obviously the water quality's pretty good there. i was thinking, do you reckon it effected fuel economy or speed as it must have been carrying alot of extra weight.. ?
  4. I've spent several hours this evening scraping all these off... not a pleasent job and rather smelly! I presume they're fresh water mussels. The bottom of the boat was totally covered!! (as you can see) My boat was moored on the Great Ouse and it's now in the East Midlands. I was wondering if this is a common across the UK and what other creatures have been found below the waterline?
  5. This is a great question and something i've often thought about especially when caught in a storm?? I don't have the answer but I'm sure someone on the forum might and I too would be really interested to know.

has this been cleared yet? anyone know?
  7. when i had a springer bug which was all of 23ft i lost track of the times people would say.... : has it shrunk in the wash...??? !! it was quite funny the first dozen or so times )
  8. i'm getting some fixed seating made... however i've been using an ikea futon. got it off ebay for £25. they fit perfectly when stretched out if you saw just one of the slats off. this doesn't comprimise the seating arrangment and is still ok for a 6ft person to sleep on.
  9. hi what does 'bottom pound' of the erewash mean? where's that upto?
  10. i've got a river license for the boat... and i have been told by other boaters the erewash even though it's a canal it's covered with a river license... the same as the nottingham canal? officially do i need a temporary canal license... any ideas anyone?
  11. Hi, I've been moored at Sawley for a few years now but never got further than Long Eaton on the Erewash. I was thinking of doing it over a weekend and it looks ok on Canal Planner but I thought I get a few opinions as my crew (my dad) is a bit slow with the old locks... bless him! How long has it taken other members? and where's the best and safest place to moor near Langley Mill? Thanks!
  12. that's great... it's for a lounge area. so i'm about right with my measurements. time to get the tool kit out!! many thanks!
  13. hi thanks for height measurements, i see exactly whay you mean. however bit confused... you say slightly more depth to 18". my current depth is 31" but then you have to minus the backing foam and that's 5". so my depth at the moment is around 26"...? but i've not thought about a sloping back rest.. how does yours compare? hi... also does the new lower seat of 16" include your foam base, or is that just the seat frame??
  14. many thanks ... anyone fancy measuring their fixed seat so i can compare?
  15. love these sites... brilliant! just wish you could fit this technology to all your friends boats and watch them on the inland waterways!!
  16. thanks for that... not far off then. any idea about depth? all my mates have got free standing furniture otherwise i'd go and measure theirs!
  17. I'm having some fixed seats made in my new narrowboat. Bench seat style. What's a good depth and height for the seating along just one side? I was thinking a depth of 80cm... so -10cm for the foam backing, this would make them 70cm deep and a height of 40cm +10cm thick foam. So height would 50cm. Does this sound about right? Thanks in advance!
  18. many thanks for that... i was looking at a 40w panel kit on ebay... but i now going to splash out on a bit bigger one. but that's really helpful indeed!!
  19. thanks for that... however i'm trying to work it out, but still no clearer...
  20. ok here's the million dollar question then... ? we've got a weekend boat (with an outboard so this doesn't always do much for for the batteries) i need to top up three leisure batteries in a bank during the week. we power a small lcd tv, a fridge part of the time, lights... and battery power to kick start a gas water heater. would a 20 or 35 or 50 watt solar panel do anything, or do i need to think much bigger?
  21. If you buy a narrowboat from Ken Yates now known as Eastern Narrowboats... you've basically bought a caravan on water. The fit-out is mainly all caravan parts, from the seats to the fridge. So I presume the answer to your question is.. yes!
  22. I want to get some fixed seats built with storage underneath... I thought about doing it myself and then thought against the idea. Does anyone know, or is anyone on the forum wanting a job over the next couple of months or so. Our boat is based at Sawley Marina. Many thanks.
  23. just driven past kegworth shallow lock (flood lock) 8pm and it's not in use... so water levels look fine.
  24. Interesting stuff... I've just bought my boat back from St Ives on the Ouse to Sawley marina about 200 plus miles.. I've refuelled unleaded numerous times at Tesco, BP, Shell etc all into a plastic 20 litre can I bought from a boat show. No one said anything or questioned me and I had no idea it was illegal?? I used a little trolley and bungie clip to get it back to the boat. I was just very cautious about refueling and took the cans well away from the boat.
