  1. If it is halfway down the mast it could be obstructed from view by buildings. Anyway half mast flying is a long standing tradition steeped in history and stems from the days when flags were used for communication. Why not do it right?

Grumpy git - good to be recognised

  2. Seems flying flags at half mast is becoming very sloppy and in my view disrespectful to those whom we are remembering. For some reason and with very few exceptions flags are flown literally halfway down the mast. The correct position is one flag span depth down from full mast. Call me a grumpy git but if a flag is to be flown do it properly especially at these difficult times

My driving licence is still the address of the house I sold prior to moving on the cut but as I no longer own a car I haven't bothered to update it.

I get non important mail sent to my sister's address but she would rather I don't register on the electoral roll at her address because i'm not actually a resident there.

    Thanks for your response dor.

Be careful, it is a legal requirement to keep your driving license up to date.  You should tell DVLA of a change of address. BTW if something criminal happens and is connected to your old address it could be difficult for you having a license with that address. A long shot I know but it could happen.

Either cut gaskets from insertion rubber or neoprene, though that wastes a lot, or use a butyl sealant.  Google Seamseal CV for a tube version or it is available on strip form.

Others will recomend sikaflex but whatever you do avoid a silicone sealant like the plague it will be.

That's great. Thanks for the info and I note you comment about silicone - but for this my first call would have been silicone.

  5. Sorry for hijacking your post but related.

Anyone looking for a first class vintage engine engineer in the Northwest, I can recommend

PB Mechanical on the Leeds Liverpool at Chorley. They well acquainted with most vintage types including Russell Newbury/National. Solved all kinds of problems for me and for a reasonable price. Any bits that could not be found were re manufactured.

Has workshop facilities, does call out and is very reliable.

    See www.pbmechanical.co.uk

01257 474422 ask for Adam seems to work seven days a week!!

No he is not related just a technical genius who isn't looking to get rich quick!

  6. Sounds like complete bollocks, CRT wouldn't - and have no incentive to - tell you about enforcement action for anyone else. Indeed the law prevents them from doing so, making it even less likely.

You weren't there so you don't know what the patrol person said! As for the law preventing them from disclosure, what the law says and what people (and CRT for that matter) do isn't always the same thing. Comment and challenge by all means but keep your bollocks to yourself! I am sure your vocabulary isn't so limited to rely on such offensive words

  7. Been following this with interest and have discovered that CRT will only chase you if they have your up to date boat and personal details. I have a home mooring but due to a health issue I had to overstay and notified CRT of my situation. Despite been given a 'sympathetic' response I was 'required' to provide a letter (not a sick note) from my 'health professional' and even then I still accumulated overstay notices. YET, five boats, no licence or number displayed, and within yards of me were allowed to stay, according to locals one had been there for at least THREE YEARS. The only difference being CRT had all my details, latest address, up to date email and phone contact. I was told by CRT the other boats had been allowed to overstay as CRT didn't have reliable contact details of the owners so couldn't send overstay notices. My subsequent emails and telephone calls remain unanswered. Seems being up front and honest doesn't count for much with CRT, think I will provide a bogus email and phone number on next licence renewal, or maybe not bother renewing

Glad to say I have recovered and continuing my cruising

  8. I use Simoniz. Others use Craftmaster, though from its appearance that may be a wax polish rather than just a wax.

Turtle Wax, Autoglym resin are polishes.

The other product worth looking at is a glaze- a sort of liquid "wax". Farecla do one and Turtle Wax do one which both work well on my cars when/if ICBA- about once every five years! ISTRI did Jarrah once, some years back but it was a long job.

I have not tried Slick 50 or similar products.

Yes I've used Craftmaster for years with good results. I have heard of Farecia - I'll look it up. Thanks for info

  9. The Paint Shed at Anderton (Based in Uplands Marina but not connected) did mine. Removed all fittings/windows etc stripped back to bare metal, removed any rust spots, repainted and did excellent sign writing. Al in a heated shed to gave good finish on final paintwork. Their work is in demand so expect to wait for a slot (12 mnths in my case but well worth the wait) unless you drop lucky with a cancellation.

  10. C&RT have little stomach for testing their fanciful interpretations of various pieces of waterways legislation in a Court of law, and if faced with the prospect of having to do so, will almost invariably look for a way out.

If they do persist in making an issue out of their apparent disapproval of the way that you use your boat, then please get in touch. A suitably amended version [to make it applicable to you, your boat and your circumstances] of the written Defence that frightened them into discontinuing the action against me in 2014 is readily available to anyone who finds themselves in need of it.

    Ps.

If anyone needs to contact me for any reason whilst I'm enjoying one of my routine periods of banishment from this Forum, then I am available via E-mail at ~ tony@canalrivertransport.com

Thanks Tony, this is very much appreciated

  11. Nothing that C&RT have published was ever intended to be helpful, and that includes the map that you've referred to. It was simply another by-product of their quest to invent and enforce rules and conditions which go well beyond their statutory powers, and the recent E-mail they've sent you about being in the same 'general location' is just another manifestation of the same pointless obsession.

In January 2014, C&RT unlawfully revoked my PBC [ the registration certificate they fraudulently misrepresent as a 'Rivers only Licence'] and Section 8'd my boat on similar grounds, and extent of boat usage, as they have cited in the E-mail recently sent to you.

The ensuing legal action was discontinued before coming to trial, made C&RT look really stupid, and cost them in excess of £15,000.

If they go for a re-run of the same needless and futile process with you and your boat, then you are in a position to achieve the same outcome.

You should not allow C&RT to intimidate you into refraining from exercising the right to use your boat in the lawful manner that you are doing, and to which your Licence entitles you.

Criky Tony, what anexperience. Thanks for the info, as always advice is to stand up to bullies whoever they are
