Some of the self exiting Leece Nevel jobs might lose magnetismg but if you had one of those you may well know how to demagnetise it. Ordinary 9 diode machines should be fine in store.

As it happens the one fitted is a Leeds Neville. Given the point about losing magnetism would I be better with an ordinary 9 diode assuming I can get one with equivalent fitting?

  2. My boat only runs one 90ah alternator that serves my needs ok. I was wondering about carrying a spare as things tend to break when miles from anywhere.  Apart from laying out the cash are there any disadvantages? Do they deteriorate/lose magmatism?   I did consider running two in tandem but the engineering involved for my engine (vintage engine in engine room) would be complicated or at best untidy. Any views?

  3. I've been quoted £3k for grit blast and two pack coating.  I'm thinking a bit of careless steering and one could scrape through the coating, yard says small damage can be touched up but I assume once mixed this stuff cannot be stored and remixing a small amount wouldn't get the correct proportions.  Any views on this and is £3k worth it?

We currently use a hand held rechargeable vacuum cleaner but since getting the dog have found it is not up to the job.

We borrowed a corded cleaner from a friend last weekend which was far superior so I have ordered one for the boat which should hopefully be arriving at work today. Couldnt find the exact same model but found one that looks identical apart from having a more powerful motor at 835w.

Will see how we get on with it this weekend.

Thanks everyone for the info.  I need something with an attachment to get into edges and corners. I'm interested in your approach Naughty Cal as it is small and appears to have the attachment.  Please let us know how you get on.

Why on earth does it operate on batteries ?  Surely if it has a charger that runs on the mains, why isn't it powered directly from the mains?

There are often mains power cuts in this neck of the woods so I guess the battery power is an attempt to avoid closure due to power loss - hmm, seemed like a good idea at the time!

  6. Some nice bits of hardware, congrats to the keepers. Am curious as to how the copper pipe is coiled, presumably some sort of former or similar but how is it done without squashing? I have used pipe bender for domestic stuff at home but these only bend as far as 90 degrees or so.

  7. Had the same problem with my previous boat. In my case I had a 55amp alternator, blocking diode and Stirling Alternator Controller. After tips from this forum I ditched the Sterling for an Adverc. Apparently Stirling's put a heavy load on the alternator whereas Adverc are kinder to the system. I know Sterling's work well for some folks but for me  shifting away from Sterling worked

    Can you link to that?

I think it's a form AP1 and a form AS1 so a fixed fee plus a scale 2 fee based on the value of the property at time of registration (note: not at time of death 20 years ago)

I think the best advice to the OP is to get two more quotes from other local solicitors. £850 sounds like you get 2 or 3 hours work plus Land Registry fees, so the price is not crazy, but shop around, don't just use Mum's solicitor.

You're probably right about sliding scale. My experience was for land worth about £60000 the fee was about £35. I went straight to Land Reg who talked me through it. It's just as easy for first registration. Lawyers over complicate things. In fact you don't need a solicitor, a licenced conveyancer can do the job for less than a solicitor. As you say, shop around

That easy route only works if both names were already on the Land Register.  In this case the house was only in her hubby's name, so it is a bit more complicated.

I'd still DIY personally, but there will be (a few hundred pounds?) fees to pay to alter the title, and all the documents will need to be provided - will, death certificate, grant of probate, personal ID etc.

It's less than £100. If visiting the Land Reg website make sure it's the genuine site as some sites call themselves Land Registry and charge high fees. LR site has wealth of information and scale of charges which are very low

Someone I know has just discovered that her name is not on the deeds of the house which she bought with her husband nearly 50 years ago.

Her husband died  20 years ago and she didn’t realise that the house was only registered in his name. Apparently to sort this out will cost £850.

    Seems a lot to me.

You say registered in his name, if the property is registered with the Land Registry it is a simple and cheap DIY procedure costing less than £100. If it is not reg it can still be done through the Land Registry DIY for a fraction of the solicitor costs and in the case in question does not sound very complicated.  All that is need will be the last conveyance, death cert and any Probate papers and or Will, and probably marriage cert.  The lady will have to prove identity in the usual way (money laundering regs). The Land Reg will give free advice over phone or visit by appointment on the process of registration etc.  They really are helpful but obviously won't give any legal advice.  Best of luck

Count the links from each battery to the main connections, adding up the negative path & the positive path. Batteries 1 & 5 have 4 links, Batteries 2, 3 & 4 have two links. This means that the bank isn’t balanced; Batteries 2, 3, 4 will be loaded fractionally more heavily than 1 & 5.

Worse. But it’s not something I’d lose any sleep over.

OK, thanks for clarifying this.Think I might change it though

No doubt i'll get lots of posts that completely miss the point i'm trying to make, saying that i have a "hidden agenda"...there is no hidden agenda its called standing up for our rights as human beings!!

I would love to know what the point is I have missed? According to OP I am down trodden, being taken advantage of.  Keep telling the wife and kids that but they ignore my bleatings
