  1. By whom were you told this? ie: who diagnosed this as the problem? (was this a CRT, Plasma or LCD dscreen?)

    Chris

As said in my original, it was an LCD. Problem diagnosed by local tv chap (not the one who sold me the original)

  2. I ruined a 12v LCD flat screen by using direct from the 12v circuit, over £200 out of pocket. I have since (two years ago) invested in a regulator (Amperor) and everything works OK including my peace of mind!
A bright shining dot appeared on the screen - am told I hade burnt the screen with incorrect voltage
When you say "ruined" (dramatic!), what actually happened?Chris
Sorry Chris I posted a reply on the wrong message. I should have saidA bright shining dot appeared on the screen - am told I hade burnt the screen with incorrect voltage
  3. If you run a 12 volt TV on the boat supply all will be well between about 11 volts and 13 volts (at the TV).

If your voltage is lower than this either the sound will go or the picture or both, but no harm will be done.

If your voltage is higher than this you will overload the screen. This will not be immediately apparent, but in time the screen will fail. If this should happen during the warranty period you won't be covered as you have operated the TV in a manner it wasn't designed for, (though many TV suppliers wouldn't know this and may well replace it - at least once . . . ). Of course if it happens after the warranty has expired, hard luck.

The only safe way to operate a TV is through a DC - DC regulator (£39.95) or through an inverter, wasting power converting 12v - 240v only for the TV to waste more converting 240v back to 12v!

If you never operate the TV when the batteries are being charged you should be OK.

  4. I know this is a subject that is often discussed what always anoys me is the difference in price from one place to another when surely all the marinas boat yards etc must be buying at the same price. Just before Christmas I filled up at Swanley Marina and going from memory I paid 0.65 p today I filled up at Roberts just before Grindley Brook and paid 0.52 p would be good if there was a way of having a main topic where boaters couild post diesel prices esp. at a time when prices are rising so quickly.
I recall somewhere there was a helpful chap running such a site - think I got it through this firum. Not helpful as my mind is failing for proper info - does anyone else have any clues??

Is this what we are looking for? To work it needs us to send in the updates regularly.http://diesel.fibrefactory.co.uk/
  5. Guess wot!? As of yesterday I noticed the right hand ignition light remaining on... AGAIN! Grrr. :o

Batteries are charging fine though. ;)

Both ignition lights come on when the key is turned to ON; then they both go off when the key is turned to START and then the right hand one flashes back on almost instantly once the engine's running. After a couple of seconds it fades to half brightness and then stays that way. If the engine's revved the light dims but doesn't go completely out. When the engine is brought back to lower revs, the light gets brighter again. B)

    Any more ideas, anyone!? :D

I had this problem, a new diode pack solved the problem but I a sure there will be other possible causes - like loose connections.

  6. Any ideas how to treat the inside of an iron kettle? I have a good one which I use on the Epping but the inside keeps rusting up. There used to be a spray on product to renovate or re-coat the Teflon pans.. I haven't seen it around for a while, does anyone know if the stuff is still available or any ideas how to treat the kettle?

  7. I wont spoil the story by revealing too much, but I've done some research on the 1951 mystery concerning the Flying Enterprise and it was interesting to discover that the CIA interviewed people from the vessel at the end of the saga. She was rumoured to have been carrying a minimum of £500,000 in cash or Zirconium.

As a small boy I followed this story with my dad translating the technical details of degrees of list into an understandable form for me. I remember waiting for the news on the BBC radio every night for the lastest. Eventually I wrote to Capt Carlsen of the Enterprise and in return received a very warming letter which I still have today.

  8. I'm going to need to capitulate to pressure from kids, and provide a boat TV, I think.

I would like to buy an LCD one, say 15" or maximum of 17" possibly.

I find it odd that analogue transmitters are due to be turned off in some areas within the next few years, but very little of what is on sale seems to come enabled to receive digital.

Rather than having to add a digital freeview box, (and extra power drain), it would be nice to get something already future-proofed.

Does anyone know of such a beast, and (even better) has anyone got one, and like to give a review of performance, please ?

    Alan

Built in digital TVs are expensive more like over priced I bought a 12v digi box from TJ Hughes for £26 which uses 1amp and produces a better picture than bog standard analogue. I use a cheap set top ariel with mag base perched on the roof when in use. It works for most of the canal system. The TV is 15" 12v LCD from Sainsburys £180 two years ago. I use this with a stabaliser

  9. I have the usual wet gear but when raining and at the tiller the rain runs off my suit into the cabin (I have a trad stern). Anyone any ideas on how to stop the rain entering the cabin? Any equipment designed for this problem?

Thanks everyone for you replies - regarding the umbrella, that's what I've been using up to now but it gets in the way of the chimney to the BMC. If I find a workable solution I'll post.

  10. I always find Wigan OK. I generally moor opposite the new BWB building or a bit further up opposite the builders yard. The kids I met were a bit excitable but no real trouble - I found talking to them in a friendly manner breaks the barriers.

    Enjoy your trip.

  11. I have just bought a regulator from Amperor as a better same than sorry approach. My telly is a 15" LCD Cello sold by Sainsburys last year at £189. It has worked very well on direct 12v with good pic quality, but as I said better safe than sorry.

Incidentally I was a bit sceptical at first but an e/mail to Amperor provided with the technical response to reassure me. The kit was with me within three days of ordering - pretty good sevice I'd say.

  12. Slightly related to boat names - is there a protocol regarding place names? I assumed this indicted where the boat was based but have seen boats with place names miles from any canal. This now perhaps indicates where the owner is from. Some classics I've seen such as Adelaide followed by (Australia) brackets included, Isle of Man, Bermuda, California & Braunston - on the same boat. Any clarification on how place names should be used? Any other 'classic' place named on boats?

  13. For anyone really interested in Vintage engines for narrowboats may I suggest finding a copy of the book "A to Z of Vintage marine Engines" by Kevin Whittle. Quite an expensive tome ( I got mine for Xmas a couple of years ago) It gives details of fifty different manufacturers of old marine engines.

Any idea where I can get hold of Ken Whittles book 'A to Z of Vintage marine Engines'? I've tried Waterstones and Amazon.

  14. I bought an 17" LCD TV from Sainsburys earlier this year, cost £189 complete with remote. It is 12v with a 240v tranformer. I run it direct of 12v DC and it works fine even without a stabaliser. So call specialst 12v LCDs are grossly over priced and with analog being turned off from 2008 not much point in shelling out heavy money.
