  1. Hi Thanks for all of the advice I think I will give it a go and see how I get on. The aim is to have an isolation valve and vent at the tank and only drain down the supply tubing and then only when I leave the boat during cold weather. The main purpose was to move the noise from the front of the boat to the rear and with a bit of luck if the boat is ballasted correctly and I slope the pipe it may self prime. I have a lot of questions and seem to have found the correct place to air them, but must apologise for the delay in answering as I assumed I would have been emailed when a reply was posted but this does not seem to have happened unless my wife has deleted it. Once again thank you all and I will keep you informed. Shaun (new member)
  2. Hi New to forum and have spent a few days checking topics for electrics, hot water, heating etc. I have a lot of questions as I am fitting out a narrow boat my self, but will tackle them one at a time. I have a few opinions on some of the topics I have checked but will check my facts before replying but will if I can help. Back to my first question: - I have a forward water tank but I am going for the reverse layout and would like to put the water pump either in the engine compartment or under the sink at the rear. I intend to put a drain valve for the system in the engine compartment (down to bilge to be pumped out) for winter freezing. The idea is to get a sleep in without the wife doing the dishes and waking me up with the pump (if only). I intend to fit an accumulator but would like to know if I will have a suction problem due to pressure drop as it will be a 45 foot run of suction pipe? I can run it below floor in 42mm if necessary and would appreciate any comments or problems experienced by others. Thanks Shaun
  3. Hi Thanks for that I will now annoy the wife by whiling away the winter hours making new ropes for the boat in the lounge whilst watching the TV. As for the monkey's paw with the pebble I will steer clear. Nice to find a site with such helpful people I shall have a good look around and see if there is any help I can give or just look for tips. Thanks Shaun
  4. Hi This is Shaun and Christine, we have done a bit of canal boating over the past few years but all of it hire. We decided to do a bit more so in our usual feet first fashion ended up getting a Dutch badge replica in France without seeing it. It is 10 meters long and needs a shower but we seem to have fallen on our feet. We did intend to get something for the British canals but we ended up in France. We are both cracking on a bit and neither of us will see 40 again. I am an instrument technician with a reasonable knowledge of electrical and mechanical; my wife is a mother with a reasonable knowledge of most things and a great talent for finding things on the net when others cannot or for a lot less. We both have a reasonable sense of humor witch is probably the only reason we are still together. Two kids, one of each 16 and 21. Not much else to say apart from we live on the English/Scottish borders and have two beautiful black Newfoundland dogs.
  5. All the information I have seen shows a three strand rope, I am new to this but with four strands it doesnot seem to work as I cannot orientate the rope when attempting to splice a loop on the end. I do not have a top middle and bottom I have two middles and by the time I am on to the bottom it is to far round the rope and causes twists and looks terrible. I will settle for one of the knots I have seen on the sites the thread has highlited untill I get a bit more experiance. The good news is I can now tie a monkeys paw somthing I have been attempting with no luck for years, Thanks. Shaun
  6. Hi I am new to the forum but have a problem with splices and rope, I have searched for information on how to splice loops in my ropes. I am new to boat owernership so have decided to buy new rope and make some nice new mooring/ lock ropes. My problem is the rope I got at a good price is four strand so non of the sites I have found cover four strand it is all three strand. I have seen most of the sites o this string and agree they are extreemly informative but does anyone know how to do four strand ?? If I do find any info on this I will post on this string.
