  1. When Sickle first arrived on her current mooring, all looked fairly hopeless.

Although advertised as 0.9 metres deep, we could barely get the boat close enough to the bank to even leap off.

However, once roped firmly to the land, she was then put in ahead gear, and cranked up.

Fairly dramatic, but after less than 10 minutes of that she would come to the side and (still) just be floating.

Obviously the technique only works with silt, not rocks, brick parapets or concrete, and no doubt an (alleged) 26" propeller helped.

We do need to repeat, occasionally, I suspect, but it certainly makes a good spectator sport for anybody watching!

"All you're doing with that motor is churning up the mud and knocking down the banks".

  2. One thing I can really reccomend is spending a bit of time on Google earth following the traces of the original Oxford canal. Its simply amazing how much of the original course can be still be traced from the air, from the huge northward loop at Rugby to small deviations. A good hours entertainment for free.

I have already done that thanks Laurence.

There was up until recently, on the wall of Badsey's a hand drawn map showing the route today overlaid with the original route. The owner (of the map not Badsey's) died this year and the map has gone to his relatives.

I wish I had taken a photo, but c'est la vie!

I will have to revisit the Herbert and see what else they have.

  3. personally i wouldn't like to stick my hand into a weed hatch knowing there's a sharp object in there ?

2nd this, if ever you put your hand into icy water it is surprisingly quickly you loose all sense of feeling and cannot feel a cut happening.

Sorry, doesn't answer the question though.

  4. Mike, got our from Tanks Direct as mentioned above

    Fitted in boat:

    watertank23610.jpg

I fitted it in the front cratch locker, it provides additional water space to our main tank in the bow. I fixed a toilet type ball valve in the plastic tank to prevent water overflowing when the bow tank is full.

E.T.A. After much faffing about I found I needed a pressure relief valve in the plastic tank to allow it to fill. This valve is obviously above the full water level. Emptying is fine as the lower pressure created just sucks water from the main tank.

  5. Laurence, I actually bought a legit copy of "Painted boats" after I saw it on "You Tube" because I wanted a copy I could watch on my tele without interruptions.

    Same with "The Bargee".

Had I not seen them on YT I would not been aware of their availibility, So I have not diddled anyone out of any money.

Not everybody is as scurrilous as you seem to infer, to me anyway.

  6. I put navigation lights on CF as close as I could to the COLREG rules (cos I like that sort of thing) but was told by a forum member they were "iffy".

If you're worried about rules, give up narrow boating and sail offshore the rules are a lot clearer!

  7. Mrs T Writes....

    To Dave G and Frank

Did McMaster actually send you an invoice for the period he is claiming ?

It strikes me as a bit peculiar that he is threatening court action in such a short space of time. In my experience I had to show the court I had issued an invoice, statement, reminder letters by recorded delivery (first two asking for payment, third threatening further action), further statements inbetween and this could take between 90-120 days.

Did someone also refer to his changing the T&C's in the past two years - find that out as supporting evidence to see exactly what he has changed AND when.

    Good luck,

    Mrs T

  8. Up until now I have mainly kept out of this thread but have followed it with interest.

What ever anyone may think of this site, there is additional "evidence" here which may be of use.

    County Court fees here:

Advice for counter claims here as well.

BTW Mrs. T used to do a lot of credit control and was familiar with the County Court process.

As mentioned earlier the more evidence you have to support your claim, the better.

  9. Just spotted this tug? engine on eBay.

Unusual to see one at all never mind in this condition & ready to tow away. Wonder what the few small jobs are.

"There are a few small jobs to do. As far as I can see:

There is a small diesel leak from the main feed pipe union.

The slate switchboard is mounted on rubber anti-vibration mounts. These will need to be replaced as the rubber has decayed. It is held in place with a small ratchet strap for the time being.

The roof of the trailer is made of a simple thin gauge steel sheet. It has been dented on both sides and has some rust along the edges but it could easily be straightened out and repaired or replaced.

3 of the 4 original canvas sides are present but are a bit the worse for wear. They would serve as a pattern for replacements.

The flywheel guard has been removed, because it was rubbing slightly but it is included.

Two of the brass information plates were loose and therefore removed but are included.

The mudguards on one side of the trailer could do with some straightening out."

  10. Your sling is far too short. The boat would end up going backwards

    Richard

Now, how do I know that?

Well yes Richard I realise the picture is not perfect, something I cobbled together before anyone else did.:P

Don't tell me you are / were a science teacher!
