  1. Hi Folks

     

    Just heard that my boat has been broken into at Ventnor Farm; apparently 5 boats done yesterday evening/night.

     

    Is the famous FINCH back then ?? anyone seen him lately ? Does anybody know what he looks like ??

     

    Be warned if you moor in the area.

     

    Will post more info as it becomes available

     

    Which part of Ventnor do you moor?

     

    Were the boats which were broken into all in the same part?

     

    We have our boat there.

    have boated many times on the UPPER thames without nav. lights.

     

    as long as the boat is displaying plenty of light,as in light through cabin windows/portholes etc.the authorities wont trouble you.

     

    the light array that blackrose has on his boat could cause confusion as the port and starboard lamps sHould be either side of the cabin.

    it would be good if it were possible to buy off-the-peg magnetic lights,as per your O.P.

     

    the fold up masthead light is a good and well proven method.

     

    it would not be too hard to make some LAMPS with nicads in, and a magnetic base.

     

    I showed a similar set up of port / starboard lights on my narrowboat and was told they were "iffy"

     

    I have sailed extensively offshore in the past and all the various yachts I have sailed in have the motoring port / starboard navigation lights, as opposed to the "under sail" tricolour masthead lights, on the pulpit, as in the picture:

     

    These are approx 1 - 2 meters above the waterline.

    These satisfy COLREGS so why not Blackrose style of port / starboard nav lights? I am not talking about the forward facing white steaming light.

  3. The little cup beneath the spherical black knob on the Morse lever is a safety device to stop the engine being knocked into gear when in neutral but drive engaged.

     

    Lift the cup to engage forward or reverse.

     

    The silver button is to take the engine "out of gear", or disengage the drive from the gear box.

    When I start CF in the cold I have to put the throttle at about 1/2 "speed" to get the engine to fire. This is when the silver button is in the "pulled out" position so I can adjust the revs the engine without the prop turning.

     

    Hope this make sense?

    gently along the mantelpiece, collecting vases on the way,

    until they all crashed together on to what had once been the

    floor, but was now trying to see what it looked like as a wall.

    Uncle Robert, who was going to be the new hearthrug, and was

    bringing the rest of his wall with him as carpet, met Piglet's

    chair just as Piglet was expecting to leave it, and for a

    little while it became very difficult to remember which was

    really the north. When there was another loud crack

    . . . Owl's room collected itself feverishly . . . and

    there was silence.

  5. For me the joy of not handing the boat back still is relavent. The last boat we hired was "Cathy" from Wigrams turn, I still remember that sad Satuturday morning taking the boat back, wishing it wasn't happening.

     

    Now, after a cruise is coming to an end on CF, although we travel the same stretch of water, I now think "Yes we are returning home, but we can go out again when ever we choose".

     

    Equipment will break down, frustrating yes, but that is part and parcel of boating, but for me the joy of fixing it brings its own satisfaction.

  6. Narrowboat Hirers please help

     

    I have just bought a great name in the narrowboat hire industry

     

    MIDDLEWICH NARROWBOATS

     

    I have been a customer with this company myself many times over the last twenty years and always had a fantastic time but I have heard mixed reviews from recent hirers.

     

    I really would like to understand the company's reputation.

    Have you hired from us? What can you tell me about our reputation? Would you hire again, why?

     

    Any other advice gratefully received. There is a lot to do at Middlewich Narrowboats for next season to make sure that our hirers have a great time, It will be done. Thank you all for your help

    Mrs T and myself hired Willow in October 2008. After hiring from BP were we in for a shock.

     

    The boat was very tired.

     

    As has been mentioned, that dreadful diesel cooker, to make toast we were told to put the bread on the hotplate.

     

    The boat had been re ballasted- paving slabs and blue bricks lying on the floor in various locations around the boat

     

    Very little storage space for food

     

    The whole boat stank of diesel

     

    The cushions were threadbare

     

    Central heating was hit and miss

     

    Grubby wet room / shower the floor of the bathroom was the base of the shower

     

    We managed 24 hours on the boat and had to return it as my mother was critically ill at the time and the hospital suggested we return home.

     

    Not that they were bound to, but the yard offered us nothing on return of the boat. (we had it booked for two weeks)

     

    We now have our own narrow boat so re hiring does not come into the question.

    A man has died after being rescued from a canal by firefighters.

     

    Emergency services were called to reports of a man in a canal near Limekiln, Kidsgrove, Stoke-on-Trent, at 5.30pm on Saturday.

     

    Fire crews were able to rescue the man from the canal, but he was already in cardiac arrest, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said.

     

    He received advance life support at the scene, before being taken to University Hospital North Staffordshire.

     

    The hospital had been pre-alerted to the man's arrival and his condition, the spokesman said.

     

    "Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of ambulance crews and hospital staff, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead shortly after arriving at hospital," he added.

     

    No further details of the accident have been released.

  8. It would be nice wouldn't it!

     

    There are the odd spot around the system where it is unusually deep. The bit of canal on the Oxford at Stretton stop where rose narrowboats have most of the hire fleet tied up for customers is around 8-9ft I have no idea why.

     

     

    Braunston by the road bridge on the GU section is deep - Mrs T fell in there a couple of months ago and disappeared completely, her feet didn't touch the bottom either.

    I'm guessing that the larger eyed one in Ray's photos is designed for the original "Southern GU" style spindles, so I'm curious if he actually uses it anywhere now, or whether it is just a decorative item ?

     

     

    Alan, the larger windlass is one of the "old" GU style ones. Our boat was originally based at Rickmansworth and I also have another similar sized steel one. I intend to have an insert made so I can use it on the northern part of the GU.
