  1. Noooo! TMY has already said he's not prepared to do that . . .

Basically he wants boaters to work at and provide all the information he needs, in the format he wants, even asking for opinions of current materials when he's basically told us that his material is 'better' - - though he's not able to give any indication of price, provision or maintenance cost.

Now - I appreciate that he may not have ALL the answers, but fundamentally he has provided none.

It occurs to me that the gentleman concerned may well have seen an existing product, in a completely different industry, and believes that it may have applications in the canal world - - fine - it may - it could even (eventually) revolutionise hull coatings for us. But his performance to date - of closing his first thread because he didn't think it was providing the answers he wanted, not bothering to appreciate all the valid responses he did get, and then insulting our intelligence.

And all this before he has researched what's already out there, or the cost/quality benefits of his own.

Shame, it could yet be a winner

Ah, I must confess I suffered from brain fade with the other thread and missed that. Thank you.

  2. Starry, brilliant. You've not included any reference to walking dog s**t into your boat because you hadn't noticed you'd trod in some on the towpath after a trip to the boozer

    Hi Star

One was at Hillmorton when I remarked to a boater how I liked his leather windlass holder belt in which was a very expensive bronze one,he said he had been boating some forty years, whipped out the windlass, spun it round in his hand and it fled into the lock (being bronze,no magnet would ever retrieve it!!).

Which lock was it, top middle or bottom?

I'll get down there with me Keb.

  3. The front curtains on CF are not actually as close as they look on the photograph.

One thought we have had is to have one long curtain, drawing from the opposite side to the fire, instead of two. This would mean the curtain would only be in proximity to the flue at night when we are on the boat.

As mentioned before we do not let the fire burn at night when we are asleep.

We are open to ideas though (sensible ones please, knowing what this forum can be like)!

  4. We had a solid fuel stove, professionally fitted to CF February last year. The fire took a little while to "learn" and get used to.

We did find that the wall above gunwale level got rather warm at times, but funnily enough not the curtains at the front of the boat.

I tackled this by fitting master-board on the wall with a 1/4" gap between the wood wall and the master-board making sure there was airflow between the board and the wood wall. See photo:

I then bought some brown stove enamel spray paint and coloured the board:

Not perfect but it solved our worry of the wall getting too hot.

  5. To me presentation of a second hand boat is an important issue.

When we were looking for a boat 3 or so years ago we spent about 18 months looking before purchasing. We weren't looking for the perfect 2nd hand boat because that doesn't exist.

We didn't look at any private sales only dealt with brokers.

Many boats we didn't get beyond the door because of: smell, lack of cleanliness and poor presentation.

The brokers approach is another issue. We don't like to be followed by a vendor breathing down our necks, on the other hand " Here's the keys, the boat is out there" to me shows lack of interest.

To me the ideal would be escorted to the boat, along with a copy of the specs, the vendor / broker saying "Have a look round, call me if I can be of further help".

We kept going back to the boat we eventually bought, outside it needed lots of TLC but we didn't mind that. We bought it because it suited us, inside was clean and tidy, had potential and the hull was sound.

  6. Having spent our first year tween Foxton and Watford locks and having experienced the problems with lack of water and lock closures id like your views on how this will effect the coming year? We like our current moorings,we do though have plans to cruise further afield and dont want to find our plans scuppered by water shortages.

    Ian.

This thread may help. I know it is a different canal but it is the same geographical area, i.e. The Midlands so I would assume a similar amount of rain and the canals are inter linked.

  7. A few to start with:

    http://www.blackpigf...co.uk/index.asp

    http://www.fendermak...co.uk/index.htm

    http://www.tradline.co.uk/

Side fenders - depends on how long your boat is

Rear fenders - protrude beyond the rudder.

Bow fender - a button should suffice.

As ever in the boating world, get the most expensive you can afford - buy cheap, get cheap

  8. You need to communicate that to your MP.

    Mrs T writes:

Been there, done it, seen it, slept with it etc etc. for the past two years.

I have contacted MP's, councillors, anyone who has publicly supported the proposal anywhere along the proposed route and haven't even had the courtesy of 1 reply !

  9. Edited to say that if there were a proposal to build a motorway, or even a main road nearby, that would be a very different thing. I would certainly feel forced to move.

    Mrs T writes:

My house is in Burton Green Warwickshire and backs onto the disused line which is to be reopened. The first proposal was to demolish all the properties on my side of the road. This has now been (allegedly) modified to say at first they will chop off up to 12 feet of my garden (leaving me with 6 feet to the foundations!), build the line, cover it with some form of roof/concrete shield, then give me back my 12 feet of garden.

Firstly, pigs fly as to the proposed cover, secondly my house is worthless, so no chance of moving.

I am not a nimby or luddite, having commuted by train for 20 odd years to Birmingham. All I want is the pre 2008 market value of my property and a small sum to have to relocate my Mother (who currently occupies the property). If it covers my solicitors costs then I would be happy. Needless to say the vultures are offering as little as 60% of the market value; I know this as one resident has panicked and sold out. So at present I am firmly in the No camp until someone ups the compensation.

  10. Natural rope.

Have you used this stuff? Is it as good as "proper" creosote that we used to be able to get? If it smells like proper creosote it may be OK, because the smell used to stop the local cats using my fenders as a scratching post!

No, I haven't used it yet but am about to next week.
